OUTDOOR FABRIC SELECTION GUIDE ABOUT STAR RATINGS Breathability Fabrics that naturally breathe well have a rating of 3 stars or higher. The level of breathability is determined by how easily air can pass through the fabric. Breathability should always be considered in fabric selection, especially in consideration of your application. With boat covers and airtight enclosures, if the fabric doesn’t breathe well, mold and mildew can become a problem unless the cover is vented. However, in the case of MARINE FABRICS ��������������������������������������������������������������������2 awnings and upholstery fabrics, being non-breathable does not present a problem and can make for a more water-resistant cushion or better rain protection. Fabrics that don’t naturally breathe at all (i.e., waterproof) are denoted with a dash.
UV Resistance OUTDOOR LIVING FABRICS �����������������������������������������������������19 Perhaps the most important factor in an outdoor fabric. A UV rating of 3 stars classifies the fabric as UV resistant. A fabric with a star rating of 4-5 stars is considered highly UV resistant. These fabrics are great for outdoor use with 5 stars being the best of the best. Highly UV resistant fabrics will last longer when consistently exposed to sunlight.
OUTDOOR AUTO & RV FABRICS �����������������������������������������������27 Water Resistance A fabric with a 3-star rating in this category is classified as water resistant. A fabric with 4 stars is highly water resistant. A fabric with a 5-star rating in the water resistance category means it is completely waterproof. Waterproof fabrics don’t let water soak into the fabric, no matter how long they are left outside. These are typically only vinyl fabrics. Water resistance and breathability are often trade-offs. Typically fabrics that don’t breathe well are more water resistant and those that do not breathe at all are considered waterproof (generally vinyl-coated or laminated).
Colorfastness Fabrics with excellent colorfastness have a rating of 4 or 5 stars. Colorfast fabrics stay bright and the colors do not fade or bleed. A fabric’s colorfastness is determined by how well it holds its color over years of sun exposure, rain and snow.
Abrasion Resistance Fabrics that have very good abrasion resistance have a rating of 3 stars while fabrics Sailrite considers highly abrasion resistant have 4 or 5 stars. Abrasion-resistant fabrics that are preferred for marine and outdoor cushions are usually heavy, stiff and often coated with vinyl or other resins. Outdoor upholstery fabrics have high abrasion resistance but with a softer hand.
Cleanability Fabrics that are easy to clean and release dirt well have a rating of 3 stars or higher. Cleanability is especially important in outdoor fabrics because mold and mildew can grow on dirt that gets trapped in the fabric’s weave. AWNINGS
Stay cool and shaded while at anchor with a boat awning (On a motor yacht, these are called sail shades.). You’ll want to make your custom awning with fabric that is UV resistant and colorfast to protect you and preserve the look of the awning. A water-resistant or waterproof awning is also a great choice to keep you dry on rainy days. A mesh awning is a great for sun protection while still allowing light to filter through. For your sailboat awning, we suggest looking at Sunbrella Marine Grade, Top Gun 1S, Weblon Regatta, Stamoid, or Top Notch 9 and 1S. For motor yachts, we suggest Polytex, Parasol and Phifertex.

A combination of high water resistance, UV resistance and colorfastness makes for a great bimini or T-top fabric. Being easy to clean is also a huge plus! BUG PROTECTION
Keep out mosquitoes, no-see-ums and other pesky insects with high-quality netting material. Our tightly woven mosquito netting is soft and can be draped, but it is also deceivingly strong so it will last through many summer adventures on your boat. Fiberglass mesh is stiffer and more appropriate for enclosure screening. Our fabric netting was designed to be an effective shield against pests without obstructing your view.
Note: Many boaters use Phifertex mesh for bug protection enclosures. It works; however, its weave is a bit large for no-see-ums, so we don’t include Phifertex in our list. Yes, Phifertex is more durable, which is often a good trade-off if you are not concerned with no-see-ums. See our “Windshield Covers” section for details on Phifertex.

CUSHIONS, EXTERIOR
For exterior cushions, durability is the name of the game. The most common choice for exterior cushions on pontoons or powerboats is a seating vinyl. These are fabrics made with seats in mind. They are waterproof and offer great UV resistance. Sunbrella Horizon is an excellent option along with other great brands like EverSoft, Morbern and Naugahyde. For the cockpit cushions on your sailboat, you could also use a woven fabric like Sunbrella Marine Grade, a mesh like Phifertex Plus or a combination of both. Softer and more decorative options include Bella-Dura and Sunbrella Upholstery, among others.

ENCLOSURES
For a full boat enclosure, you’ll want to invest in a high-quality marine fabric with high ratings for UV resistance, water resistance, colorfastness and abrasion resistance. A full boat enclosure is a big DIY project to undertake, so you want a fabric that will last for years on your boat, whether you’re a liveaboard or weekend cruiser. If choosing a waterproof vinyl for your boat enclosure, your application may require ventilation since the fabric is not breathable. Sunbrella and Stamoid are popular choices among boaters. Lifeline Netting is an important part of your boat safety protocol. It keeps children, pets, crew members and equipment on board. Our knotted safety line netting is constructed from Dupont #36 Twisted Nylon Twine and contains UV inhibitors to promote longer life and to prevent rot. Mostly found on commercial ships to protect equipment, our go-to material for a marine tarp is Shelter-Rite vinyl. This is the best choice for long-wearing tarps in all environments as it offers the best durability of all the fabrics we offer. It is a heavy fabric, which makes it best suited for tarps and not other cover applications. If breathability is required, Top Notch 11.5 is our most durable woven fabric.

COVERS
Protect your outdoor furniture with a well-made cover. For outdoor covers, we recommend durable fabrics with great abrasion and UV resistance that will stay colorfast in the sun. Breathability and water resistance are also important for covers and offer a trade-off. A waterproof fabric will be less breathable, but will be a very effective cover if a vent is added. A breathable, water-resistant fabric is a great cover combination for keeping items dry and also preventing mold and mildew growth. Protect-It is an example of an inexpensive, breathable and soft cover cloth for outdoor furniture.

CUSHIONS
Outdoor cushions for your patio furniture and porch swing should be comfortable and functional. Look for a fabric that’s breathable and water resistant to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. If you keep your cushions outdoors all summer, you’ll also want to look for a fabric with high UV resistance and colorfastness. If choosing a polyester printed fabric, keep in mind that the fabric will stretch slightly over time and appear faded. We only recommend choosing polyester for occasional use and bringing your cushions indoors when not in use.

POP-UP ENCLOSURES
Pop-up enclosures for campers and trucks provide more room and create a canvas “tent-like” structure for your outdoor adventures. To fabricate a pop-up enclosure, you need a highly water resistant fabric that is also abrasion and UV resistant and colorfast. We recommend two brands for pop-up enclosures: Camper-Tex and Firesist.
