AN INTRODUCTION TO HEADLONG
Headlong creates exhilarating contemporary theatre: a provocative mix of innovative new writing, reimagined classics and influential twentieth century plays that illuminate our world. Touring exceptional theatre around the UK, Headlong also presents work on major London stages and internationally, working alongside the best emerging artists and more established talent to create exciting work. Placing digital innovation at the forefront of our activities, Headlong builds inventive online content to sit alongside our productions, enriching audiences’ understanding of the work.
Our productions have included People, Places and Things (National Theatre and West End), The Glass Menagerie (UK tour), 1984 (UK and international tour and West End), The Nether (Royal Court and West End), The Absence of War (UK tour), Spring Awakening (UK tour), Chimerica (Almeida and West End), American Psycho (Almeida) and Enron (UK tour, West End and Broadway). This year, 1984 visits Melbourne Festival, the Broad Stage Santa Monica, Shakespeare Theatre Washington and ART Boston; and following its sell-out run at the National Theatre, Duncan Macmillan’s People Places and Things moves into the West End in March.
Last year Headlong played across the UK in cities including Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Plymouth and London to audience numbers of more than 180,000.
Last year, two of our projects enjoyed sustained West End transfers, cementing Headlong’s position as a producer of high-quality thrilling work for wide audiences. 1984 played for 17 weeks at the Playhouse and has gone on to an international tour this year and The Nether transferred to the Duke of York’s where it ran for 12 weeks and won an Olivier Award for Best Design.
Our highly successful business model is based on partnership, working in collaboration with both commercial and subsided partners, which allows us to achieve significant reach and to resource world-class production values.
During the last year a further 80,000 people have engaged with Headlong’s digital work through our website.
