1 The TENORSAX of WARDELL GRAY Solographers: Jan Evensmo & James Accardi Last update: June 8, 2014 2 Born: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Feb. 13, 1921 Died: Las Vegas, Nevada, May 25, 1955 Introduction: Wardell Gray was the natural candidate to transfer Lester Young’s tenorsax playing to the bebop era. His elegant artistry lasted only a few years, but he was one of the greatest! History: First musical studies on clarinet in Detroit where he attended Cass Tech. First engagements with Jimmy Raschel and Benny Carew. Joined Earl Hines in 1943 and stayed over two years with the band before settling on the West Coast. Came into prominence through his performances and recordings with the concert promoter Gene Norman and his playing in jam sessions with Dexter Gordon.; his famous recording with Gordon, “The Chase” (1947), resulted from these sessions as did an opportunity to record with Charlie Parker (1947). As a member of Benny Goodman’s small group WG was an important figure in Goodman’s first experiments with bop (1948). He moved to New York with Goodman and in 1948 worked at the Royal Roost, first with Count Basie, then with the resident band led by Tadd Dameron; he made recordings with both leaders. After playing with Goodman’s bigband (1948-49) and recording in Basie’s small group (1950-51), WG returned to freelance work on the West Coast and Las Vegas. He took part in many recorded jam sessions and also recorded with Louie Bellson in 1952-53). The circumstances around his untimely death (1955) is unclear (ref. -

The first section addresses the large role oral history plays in the dominant bebop narrative, the reasons the history of bebop has been constructed this way, and the issues that arise from allowing oral history to play such a large role in writing bebop’s history. The following chapters address specific instances from Gitler’s oral history and from the relevant recordings from this transitionary period of jazz, with musical transcription and analysis that elucidate the often vague words of the significant musicians. 1 The TENORSAX of GEORGE HOLMES TATE “BUDDY” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Jan. 4, 2020 2 Born: Sherman, Texas, Feb. 22, 1914 Died: Chandler, Arizona, Feb. 10, 2001 Introduction: We became familiar with Buddy Tate very early through his recordings with Count Basie. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder. -

1 The TROMBONE of WILLIAM WELLS “DICKY” “DICKIE” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Oct. 5, 2018 Note: This is a complete solography with comments to every session but only including 1949. There are also some missing items, please assist. 2 Born: Centerville, Tennessee, June 10, 1909 Died: NYC. Nov. 12, 1985 Introduction: Dicky Wells was my first trombone favourite, after listening to and being hypnotized by his 1937 Paris recordings. This resulted later in more serious and comprehensive studies. The solography below is basically the one printed as Vol. 14 (1983) in my Jazz Solography Series, and extended through the nineteen forties. Early history: Family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1911. Studied music from the age of 10, played baritone hom in the Booker T. Washington Community Centre Band at 13. Trombone from the age of 16, played locally in Lucius Brown’s Band, then to New York in drummer Lloyd W. Scott’s band (1926). Remained in New York with the band which was later led by Lloyd’s brother Cecil Scott. Worked mainly with Cecil Scott until early 1930, then joined Elmer Snowden’s Band (1930-31), appeared with Snowden in the film ‘Smash Your Baggage’. Worked with Russell Wooding in 1932, also toured with Benny Carter (1932-33), brief spell with Charlie Johnson before joining Fletcher Henderson in 1933, also ‘gigged’ with Chick Webb’s Band at Lafayette Theatre (1933). Again with Benny Carter (early 1934), then joined Teddy Hill in September 1934 and remained with the band for trip to Europe (summer 1937). Joined Count Basie at The Famous Door in July 1938, regularly with Basie until early 1946. -

This detailed name discography of Clark Terry has been prepared as a companion piece to Clark Terrys autobiography. A summarized version of this name discography is included in the book. The discography includes 902 recording sessions from February 1947 to July 2008. It includes 788 sessions with Clark Terry as a sideman and 114 sessions with him as a leader. Included are 2584 unique musicians (total 12,604 entries) and 3403 unique tunes (total 7735 entries). The discography is organized chronologically by recording session. The leader of the session is listed at the top of each session in large bold print. 1 The TENORSAX of JEAN BAPTISTE ILLINOIS JACQUET Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Dec. 20, 2020 2 Born: Broussard, Louisiana, Oct. 30, 1919 Died: NYC. July 22, 2004 Introduction: Illinois Jacquet was a tenorsax favourite in our younger days, and his strong extrovert tenorsax performances, whether with JATP or with Count Basie’s orga n, increased our teenager hormones dramatically and was used as good ba ckground for our lovemaking. Later we realized that he was one of the best, original and creative tenorsax player in jazz history, and his active career lasted for m ore tha n sixty years. I met him once, in New York, when he kindly invited me out for an unforgettable day before he drove me to the airport. I repaid some of his hospitality by helping him mowing his grass lane! History: Grew up in Houston, Texas. Played altosax with Lionel Proctor, Bob Cooper and Milton Larkins in the late 1930s, and in 1941 he moved to the West Coast with Floyd Ray's Jump Band. He then joined Lionel Hampton, where he switched to tenorsax and became well known through his solo on Hampton’s “Flying Home” (1942). After leaving Hampton he joined Cab Calloway (1943-44), recorded with Jazz At The Philharmonic and appeared in the film “Jammin’ The Blues” (both in 1944). Worked with Count Basie (1945-46). Synopsis of Jack & The Beanstalk in Polari, the old gay slang Jack was a filly omie who lived with his mother in a bijou latty. They had nanty metzers, just a cow. The polone polaried to Jack he would have to troll down to the market with the cow and sell it for some measures. Jack took the cow and was offered some fabulosa magic beans for the beast. When he got home his mother’s eek turned furious and she chucked the beans out of the latty window. Next day Jack vadad a big beanstalk which had sprouted up, and so he climbed up it. Ajax to the top of the beanstalk was a huge latty, Jack knocked on the door and a polone answered. She told him to go trolling as a great big omie lived there, her husband who jarried filly omies. Jack said he was tired and hungry himself, so the polone let him into the latty and gave him some bona manjari. As he was jarrying he heard some giant footsteps and the polone told him to go and hide.
