PROMISING START: Date Opponent Time/Score The 2016 Wildcats have come roaring out of the gate thus far. Coach Kyle’s Cats own a 3-0 record, marking the first time since 2012 the team has won its first three contests. The offense’s fast start (143 8/26 @ Normandy W, 45-0 points) is no surprise, as the team scored 160 points in its first three games Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium last year. The defense’s performance is a positive change, however. The 2007 season marks the last time the Cats allowed just 7 points in its opening three games. 9/3 vs. Mentor W, 49-7 Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium BIG BRUISERS: The hidden reason for the Wildcats’ success thus far is the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line has paved 9/10 vs. Valley Forge W, 49-0 the way for a bruising rushing attack, which is responsible for 812 yards this Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium season. The Wildcats’ backs are averaging an impressive 6.8 yards per carry. On the other side of the line, the front seven has attacked opposing offenses. The two teams have combined for just 282 total yards, as the Cats have 24 9/16 @Detroit Catholic Central 7 p.m. tackles for loss and 6 sacks. The offensive line is likely among the biggest in Fr. Elmer Stadium Ohio, as the average Wildcat offensive lineman is 6’3”, 287 pounds.

9/23 @Walsh Jesuit 7 p.m. DEPTH IN NUMBERS: The Saint Ignatius defense has showcased its depth so far this season, with 40 different Wildcats recording a tackle. Eight differ- Conway Memorial Stadium ent Cats have had a hand in a sack, too. Saint Ignatius will look to utilize that depth by subbing in defensive linemen and linebackers to counteract a fierce 10/1 @ Parma Senior 7 p.m. Shamrock’s rushing attack. Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium RUN AT WILL: After adapting a pass-heavy attack in 2015, the Wildcats have morphed into a run-first squad in 2016. The Cats have run the early 10/7 @ Canton GlenOak 7 p.m. and often this season, showing off the trait against Valley Forge, rushing the Bob Commings Field ball 43 times for 306 yards. Mark Bobinski ‘18 and Jimmy Andrews ‘17 have split the carries this season, with Patrick Ryan ‘17 proving to be 10/14 @ Archbishop Moeller 7 p.m. a dangerous threat to scramble and Dean Stowers ‘17 becoming a speedy and Memorial Stadium at Otterbein University evasive third option at running back. NO YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST: Perhaps the biggest strongsuit of 10/22 @ St. Xavier 2 p.m. the defense is its rushing defense. The Wildcats’ front seven has stunted op- Tom Ballaban Field posing offenses’ rushing attacks this season, limiting Normandy, Mentor, and Valley Forge to just 112 yards. The “Linebacker Legion” of Adam Shibley ‘17, 10/29 vs. St. Edward 6 p.m. James Leyden ‘17, and John Velotta ‘17 moves quickly to the ball, often pen- etrating the backfield. The Legion will need to have a strong game on Friday, FirstEnergy Stadium as the Wildcats face a Shamrocks team that averages 321.3 rushing yards per game on 47 attempts per game.

UPDATE ON THE WILD KITTENS: The freshman and JV teams play Detroit Catholic Central on Saturday at Wasmer Field at 12 and 1:30 p.m., respectively. The Freshman Gold Cats are undefeated at 3-0 and the JV Cats have a 2-1 mark on the year.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats will travel to Cuyahoga Falls to play Walsh Jesuit on Friday, September 23 at Conway Memorial Stadium. Learning about the Shamrocks ... Detroit Catholic Central Schedule

LIVING LEGENDS COLLIDE: Detroit Catholic Central and Saint Ignatius Date Opponent Time/Score have similar histories., but have never played before. The Shamrocks have 11 football state championships, even with the Wildcats’ 11 titles in the OHSAA. DCC also has a legendary head coach at the helm, Tom Mach. The 8/26 vs. Sterling Heights Stevenson W, 42-0 41-year veteran has an incredible record of 360-96 (.789). When the Wildcats Fr. Elmer Stadium and Shamrocks do battle on Tom Mach Field at Fr. Elmer Stadium, two coach- ing legends with a combined 684 wins and highly respected programs will be 9/2 vs. Toledo Whitmer W, 29-7 facing off. Whitmer Memorial Stadium SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL: The Shamrocks are not a team built on finesse. Rather, Detroit Central Catholic is a team reliant on pounding the ball its 9/9 @ St. Michael’s College School W, 49-7 opponent’s throat. The Shamrocks have run the ball 143 times this season, only Saint Michael’s Eugene Melnyk Field passing 7 times. Mach’s men are efficient at it, too, averaging an impressive 6.74 yards per carry for 943 net rushing yards on the season. The approach will likely 9/16 vs. Saint Ignatius 7 p.m. not vary from the norm against the Wildcats. Unlike Normandy (triple option) or Valley Forge (Wing-T), the Shamrocks do not rely on a unique offensive Fr. Elmer Stadium formation. Instead, DCC uses a variety of schemes, from an Ace set to the I- formation to a T-formation. 9/24 @ Brother Rice 7 p.m. Hurley Field RUNNING BACK COMMITTE: The Shamrocks do not have one running back far above the rest in carries or yards. Three Shamrocks have over 100 yards rushing, and seven different Shamrocks have reached the on running 9/30 vs. Pauline Johnson Collegiate 7 p.m. plays. Milewski Field THE SCRAMBLER: One of the heaviest running teams in the state, the Sham- rocks have only passed the ball 7 times this season. But the stats don’t reflect 10/16 DeLaSalle – Boys’ Bowl 7 p.m. the skillset of quarterback Austin Brown. The 6’0”, 180 pound sophomore can Fr. Elmer Stadium scramble for crucial yards on a passing down. Brown has fooled defenses many times this season, rushing 19 times for 81 yards and 1 touchdown. Brown also 10/22 CHSL Prep Bowl 7 p.m. has enjoyed success through the air, completing 6-of-7 passes for 171 yards and 4 touchdowns. Brown has received offers from Toledo, Akron, and Miami Ford Field (OH). The Wildcats will need to keep a keen eye on Brown.

DARK KNIGHT: The Shamrocks’ defense has its share of playmakers, particu- larly at the linebacker spot. Foremost among those is junior linebacker / fullback Isaac Darkangelo. The 6’1”, 230 pound two-way player has a team-high 27 tackles this season.

SACK ATTACK: Opposing offenses have not thrived passing the ball this year, thanks in part to senior defensive end Jackson Ross. The 6’3”, 240 pound end has a team-best 2 sacks, along with 15 tackles.

Coach Chuck Kyle’s Wildcats, scoring all of their points in the first half, defeated the Valley Forge Patriots, 41-0, on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert. M. Boulton Stadium. Although the early years of Saint Ignatius football were not laden with the success Wildcats faithful have grown accustom to, the man who put the football program on the local map was Mr. Ralph Vince, a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and Washington & Jefferson University who studied law at Western Reserve University. The astute and eloquent Coach Vince guided his Golden Tornado, as Saint Igna- tius was known then, to a City Championship in 1925, a 15-game winning streak and an overall record of 29-6 from 1923 through 1926. Those 29 victories included a City Runner-Up finish in 1926 and 19 shutouts. Coach Vince’s legendary 1925 team yielded just 25 points all season and compiled 25 consecutive shutout quarters. In 1925 and 1926, the Golden Tornado posted 8-1 seasons.
