SPOTLIGHT ON LAS VEGAS WELCOME TO LAS VEGAS, NEVADA Las Vegas, in Nevada’s Mojave Desert, is a resort city famed for its vibrant nightlife, centered around 24-hour casinos and other entertainment options. Its main street and focal point is the Strip, just over 4 miles long. This boulevard is home to themed hotels with elaborate displays such as fountains synchronized to music as well as replicas of an Egyptian pyramid, the Venetian Grand Canal, and the Eiffel Tower. GEOGRAPHY Las Vegas is situated within Clark County in a basin on the floor of the Mojave Desert and is surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides. Much of the landscape is rocky and arid with desert vegetation and wildlife. It can be subjected to torrential flash floods, although much has been done to mitigate the effects of flash floods through improved drainage systems. The peaks surrounding Las Vegas reach elevations of over 10,000 feet, and act as barriers to the strong flow of moisture from the surrounding area. The elevation is approximately 2,030 ft above sea level. Within the city there are many lawns, trees and other greenery. Due to water resource issues, there has been a movement to encourage xeriscapes. Another part of conservation efforts is scheduled watering days for residential landscaping. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant in 2008 funded a program that analyzed and forecast growth and environmental impacts through the year 2019. Las Vegans spend a disproportionate amount of time doling out one very obvious statement: yes, people actually live here, and not all of us work in casinos, though, to be fair, an overwhelming percentage do. Roughly 335,000 people in Las Vegas work in hospitality and leisure and this is a city of less than 2 million. When you factor in related fields like media and marketing, and industries that support hospitality employees it wouldn’t be a far stretch to say that the majority of working adults in the Las Vegas Valley are in some way dependent on the hospitality industry for their livelihood. With close to 40 million annual visitors, Las Vegas is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and its clientele is amazingly diverse, from every part of the country and every corner of the globe, and the cuisine it offers represents this, with everything from kaiseki to tapas, Hawaiian specialties to Brazilian barbecue, rare Florida stone crabs to fish and chips. Carnivorous Vegas is awash in steakhouses, with the best selection in the world - and at every price point - while it also has an amazing array of fine French dining, with the most famous Parisian masters represented here. Then there is Las Vegas’ own homegrown specialty, the all-you-can-eat buffet, offered here in more iterations and staggering variety than anywhere else. From Tourists to Treasure-Hunters You can spend money in almost any way imaginable in Las Vegas, but the best way to actually leave with what you paid for is to go shopping. We consider it one of your better options in terms of having something to show for your empty wallet. If your tastes run to the expensive, you will want to schedule in some serious time at the luxury shops of Crystals and Via Bellagio. They are even within walking distance of each other if you’re not wearing heels. Also, you may be surprised to hear that there are six certified Rolex dealers on the Strip alone, and that you can buy a Ferrari or Maserati direct from the showroom at the Wynn. If these are a little (or a lot) too pricey for you, check out Fashion Show mall at the north end of the Strip, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and The Forum Shops at Caesars. For charming little shops paired with a Vegas-only experience to match, head off the Strip to the Downtown Container Park. It’s made from up-cycled shipping containers, and is home to lots of hip, artsy boutiques, galleries, restaurants, live music and even a play area for kids. If you’re looking for something specific, from a fast cars or fine jewelry to a t-shirts or unique souvenir, chances are, you can find it in Las Vegas.
