And all you need to create a teacher account is your printed Teacher’s Edition and an internet connection. How to Create a Teacher Account To create an account: 1. Go to http://my.hrw.com 2. Click on the orange “Register” button, shown in the image to the left. 3. Select “Teacher in a US School” in the dropdown menu and click the “Register” button to continue. How to Register 4. Fill in your personal information and choose a username and password. Make sure you choose a username and password that you will remember. 5. Read the Terms of Use and click the “I Agree” button to continue. 6. Select your school from the dropdown menu and then enter the ISBN from the back of your book. The ISBN is a 13-digit number that can be found on the back of the book above the Location of your ISBN number barcode, shown in the sample image to the left. 7. You will be then be asked for a secure word. These secure words can be found on a specific page inside your printed Teacher’s Edition. Adding Additional Books to Your Account You only need to create a new user account one time. Once you have created your account and log into the system, you will notice a portion of the screen on your home page like the one to the left. You can enter the ISBN numbers for additional books in the box provided and click “Submit.” This will place all of the books you need under a single login. Adding Additional Books to you account Creating a Student Account After you have created an account for yourself, you will need to set up one or more classes and place your students into them. How to Set Up a Class On the far right-hand side of the screen, after logging in, you will see a Learning Management Center. Click on the “Add a Class” button to create a new class. You will be asked to name your class, select the period and grade level, and to select a book for your class. After you have set up your classes, you can create student accounts and place them into your class. Add a Class Screen How to Create a Student Account On the Learning Management Center, click on the “Add a Student” button to create a student account. First, select which class you want to add students to using the drop down menu. This One Log In/Password button will load a new page. Then, tell the system how many students you would like to add. Fill in the boxes with the student name and Student ID, if available, and click the “Add” button. This will generate a list of unique student user names and passwords that you can then hand out to your class. If your district has already set up student accounts, or if your students have accounts from their other classes, you can simply click the “One Log In/Password” button on the “Add Students” screen. This will allow you to import existing students from your school into your classroom by selecting from a list of available students. From your student’s point of view, they will have only one log in, but your book will appear on their log in screen along with all of their Adding existing students to your Class other online books in the system. Navigating the Landing Page So you’ve created and account and you are in the system. Now what? How do you find what you need? Navigating the homepage is easy. We’ll tell you how. Navigating the Homepage The homepage is divided into three main parts: Account Management on the left, Textbook Resources in the middle, and Learning Management Center on the right. Account Management The blue column on the left is all about Overview of the Homepage managing your account. You can add new books to your account, update your registration information, and find contact information for technical support—in case you have any questions about using the system. Textbook Resources The middle portion of the page is where your eBooks and course material are located. Each book has an entry with the title and the Example of a link to an eBook cover of the book, as shown on the left. Some books may have multiple links below the title, but all will have at least one link named “Go to the Online Textbook.” This link will take you directly into your eBook for that title. Learning Management Center The blue column on the right is where you can manage your online class. This column has links for adding individual students or adding new classes. You can also edit or delete a class or student record as needed. You can even view and print your class rosters. Also found in the Learning Management Center is the Assignment Management section. From here you can enter our assessment system, from which you can create and administer tests to the students and classes you have created. You can even run reports on student and class performance. The Learning Management Center Navigating the Online Book When is a book not a book? When it is an online book. Our online programs contain the same, full student edition that you would find in print, but also a host of additional resources described below. Navigating the Online Book When you first click into the book, you will see a welcome screen like the one on the left. At the top of the screen, you will see three tabs. The Book Pages tab takes you to your eBook. The Student Resources tab contains eBook starting page media and instructional resources for your students to use in conjunction with the book. The Teacher Resources tab provides resources for your own use. NOTE: The Teacher tab is not available to the student. Navigational Tabs in the eBook When you select a story from the dropdown list above the tabs, you will see the text and images from the printed book page. Just above the main page you will see navigation that tells you what page number(s) this screen represents. From here you may click “Next” to move through the book one page at a time, or just type in the number of the page you want to jump to. On the left of the book pages screen is a column that you can use to navigate your online story. Also on the story page, you may also find embedded objects, like audio or note-taking. Interactive objects will have an extra “gleam” to them to indicate that they can be clicked on. Textbook page in the eBook On the student and teacher resource tabs you will find resources correlated to the lessons in the book. Depending on which book you are using, these resources may include: • GrammarNotes • PowerNotes • Reader/Writer Notebook • NovelWise Mini-Site • Media Smart Mini-Site • WordSharp • Level Up Skills Tutorials Menus on the Teacher Resources Tab • And more… Making an Assignment The online books are more than just content. There is also a host of pre-built assessments that can be assigned to students. These assessments can be found by clicking on the “Assignments” button in the Learning Management Center column on the home screen. Making an Assignment The Assignments screen contains a host of functionalities and resources, contained in tabs along the top of the screen. By clicking on the Assignments Tab showing list of available assessments “Assignments” tab and selecting your class and book, you will see a list of resources like the screen on the left. You can choose to “View” or “Assign” any of these resources. If you click “View,” you will see a pop-up of the test like the one on the left. This view allows you to read the test prior to assigning it. When looking at the test as a teacher, you can see which answers are correct (marked by an arrow and listed beneath the question) as well as which standards the question may be correlated to (in the shaded area below the question). Best of all, the system will automatically grade any question that is not open-ended. That means that questions like multiple choice are graded and stored for your review instantly, without any extra work on your part. Short answer and essay Example of Viewing an Assessment questions can be graded at your leisure and will be used to calculate the final student scores. When making an assignment, you can also set the parameters for your students’ experience.
