Thursday, July 23, 2020 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT NATALIE JEAN Every musician has a very unique journey that they often embark on for a variety of reasons. Maryland singer-songwriter Natalie Jean's journey is no different in that she was exposed to music at a young age, which helped her to get where she is today. As a young girl she used to sing with her father who was a famous Haitian artist by the name of Guy R. Jean. With music instilled at a young age she was able to establish a frm foundation of a singing background. Her love of poetry and dance would help as well. Both of these two talents help play into what makes Natalie Jean a truly unique performer. Natalie is a versatile, multi-nominated, award-winning singer/songwriter performer. She is also a Voting Member in the Recording Academy (GRAMMYS). She can sing in French, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and English. She has performed in DC, MD, LA, New York, Nashville, and North Carolina. She has been nominated over 100 times for her music and has won several awards. This solid foundation of a musical and entertainment background is a key reason why Natalie has not only previously won many awards, but also has an extremely impressive list of award nominations from a variety of accredited music institutions. Most recently, she won a Silver Medal in the Global Music Awards for her song “Mother Earth” for Environmental Protest Song and Music Video. At the 2019 Josie Music Awards, which took place at the world famous Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN, she won Versatile Artist of The Year. To date Jean has released six albums and several singles. Most recently, she released Where Do We Go From Here?, a social impact/message album. Where Do We Go From Here? is a 15 song album which addresses the world’s issues. Natalie is not trying to change your mind. She wants the listeners to place themselves in other people’s shoes while getting the sense of urgency, loss, and pain. This album pleads with humanity to fnd a way to heal a world, that has seemingly lost its way. “Few artists confront difficult themes with the intensity of Natalie Jean. Her work dwells on raw, downbeat subjects—so listeners beware. For example, she addresses her rapist in ‘I Told You No,’ conveying the psychic and physical effects of a sexual attack. ‘Heroes,’ despite its optimistic pedal steel guitar twang, tells of a young boy who is hailed a hero—after he falls victim to a shooting. Perhaps her most successful song is ‘I Am,’ showing her impressive resolve in the face of obstacles.” - Music Connection Magazine Thursday, July 23, 2020 CALENDAR NO. 1 SONG Singles July 24 Blake Shelton feat. Rebecca St. James/Dawn/Heritage Music While so much of today’s country radio fare has an external focus—treading July 31 the same lyrical tropes of parties, alcohol, and nameless girls—Moore again Mac McAnally/Once In A Lifetime/Mailboat Records turns introspective on his fourth studio album for MCA Nashville, writing all Rascal Flatts/How They Remember You/Big Machine Records but one track on the album and producing it with David Garcia, Luke Chris Tomlin/Chris Tomlin & Friends/Sparrow Dick and Blair Daly on select tracks. He mines deeper into topics—seeking love, seeking freedom, seeking peace, making peace with old decisions— that have become the bedrock of his catalog, but infuses them with fresh intensity. Moore sat down with MusicRow to discuss the album further. Click here to read more. Each songwriter and artist earning No. 1 credit on the MusicRow Chart receives a MusicRow Challenge Coin. CA: How did you end up in the music business? MS: I worked as a CPA in New York for a big accounting firm. Back in that day with those jobs, you hoped one of your clients would hire you. I had a friend who worked on the acquisition of Island Records by Polygram, went there and basically had a job for me. I was 26 years old, got a $3,000 raise and I could wear jeans to work. I came home and said, “I think I want to do this.” I wasn’t a musician and didn’t want to be in the music business, necessarily. Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011 Several years ago through eBay I bought colored-vinyl versions of The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album) from a major fan named Ed. After I paid, he asked if I would be interested in some bootlegs he had that featured sessions recorded while The Beatles were working on their amazing albums—he was willing to transfer them to CD free of charge. I mentioned in my thank you e-mail that I was old enough to have seen the Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He replied it was "an honor" to meet someone who saw the Beatles live (Ed was born in 1966). This made me think that although those who watched The Beatles that night were part of a huge television audience—almost 74 million1—it's a set whose numbers have decreased tremendously in the 45 years that have passed. That realization, Ed's comment and generous offer to send the CDs, and the about-the-same-time coincidence of having dinner with a man named Bill who saw the Beatles perform in Milwaukee in the fall of 1964 started a chain of events that led me to write two articles. The first, "A Day in the Center of Beatlemania," is about the band's September 4, 1964, appearance at the Arena in Milwaukee. The seed for the second—this one—was planted after Ed's CDs arrived. These were interesting for their roughness and for the insights they provided into the experimentation that produced musical passages such as the unusual Paul McCartney organ part that opens and becomes the backbone of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." On one I was hearing works in progress ranging from the acoustic beginning of "All Together Now" to John Lennon performing an early version of "Good Morning, Good Morning" when out of the blue comes Pete Drake, his talking guitar, and the sliding-steel-words: "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me." The track is from the bootleg Through Many Years that focuses on George Harrison and Ringo Starr.2 Ed had combined various bootlegs on each of the CDs he sent.

  • Packaged Wright
PACKAGED WRIGHT Michelle Wright's image consultants helped her get Nashville's attention. Now if they could only find her a hit... By David Hayes, Saturday Night, June 1995 Gently downshifting her brand-new black Mercedes E420 sedan, Michelle Wright eases off I-65 South at the Franklin exit and drives past fast-food outlets and rolling fields while a country station plays on the radio. When you've made it in country music, you live in Franklin, a tidy suburb forty minutes from Nashville's Music Row where stars such as Dolly Parton and Wynonna Judd own mansions and estates. It's also where Wright, Canada's top female country singer, recently bought a five-bedroom home, although hers is one of many lookalikes in a newly built, middle-class subdivision. Still, both the car -- which recently replaced her clunky old Ford Escort -- and the house are material symbols of Wright's progress in the country-music major leagues, a far cry from the life of a struggling newcomer. At her house, Wright disappears into her bedroom while her longtime manager, Brian Ferriman, and her image consultant, Joan Lacey, make themselves comfortable in the bright, high-ceilinged living room. The plan is to model several possible outfits for the upcoming Juno Awards, where Wright is both a presenter and a nominee. Considering how often she has been away on tour since the fall, it's not surprising Wright's house feels barely lived in, as though the interior designer arranged the furniture and hung the prints yesterday. A homey touch is provided by Wright's four cats, who pad matter-of-factly across the white broadloom.
