Mind you, I wish we could get a few big or even medium-size sponsors to donate a couple thousand dollars to the AKA to help defray some of the convention expenses. WHAT'S IN A NAME?

While feeding the 2,800 plus ballot envelopes through the postage meter, I was again amused and entertained by the variety of names that our members have. Not that I am saying that anyone's name is funny, it is just that we have members whose names are the same as well known celebrities. Do we have genuine celebrities who are members of the AKA? Possibly. If there are some, would I tell you who they are? No.

"STOP THE MADNESS"

Is there anyone out there who is not tired of the election by now? Let's settle it in a hurry. Gore versus Bush in a winner takes all best of three rokkaku battle. Mind you, now, I am not taking sides but have you noticed that if you switch the first letters of the candidates' last names, this year's election comes down to a lot of Bore and Gush? (I tried the same approach with the AKA election and was surprised to see that it was still Gomberg and Grow. Hmmmm.)

AND, AFTER THAT...

Well, it is sometime in the morning and I am getting rummy after watching a seemingly endless parade of envelopes march through the meter, I had better get this offto Roger for the next issue of KITING.

One last question ...

Have you tugged your kite today?

Mine's buried somewhere under ballots. Kiting 4

LARGEST Most of my photography to date has been with point and shoot 35mmcameras bought at garage SUPERMARKET sales with musical movement shutter trips. Re cently however, I received encouragement to make my own cameras after showing my photos OF KITES to a man who happens to be a professional photographer. Not just any professional, but one ON TI::IEEAST who is into old large fo rmat cameras such as 10" and 16" Kodak Circuit cameras that make a 360 degree panoramic image in one shot. With these COAST camaras he makes contact prints that are fo ur fe et long and show incredible detail. My friends best advice came early on when he suggested that rather than purchase an expensive medium or large fo rmat camera, I would be better off buying a high quality lens (on e-bay) and then build my own camera body to fitit. He argued that 1-800-29KITES with less invested I would be more at ease risking it to the whims of Mother Mature while flying it Call o-"fDaiifor price quote! off the ship's upper deck. The simple basics ofthese cameras are a light tight box, a place to hold the film at the correct fo cal length behind the lens, and the lens/ shutter combination. Being ready to try build ingjust about anything myself, I was not afraid to try this. For a while I am back to one shot per lofting,as I was with my early KAP due to the lack of a winder and not having a self cocking shutter on the camera that I have built. Eventu ally I will figure out a winding mechanism and limit switch to advance the film to the next frame. I will also have to locate a self cocking shutter to fitmy lens. Each shot on my camera uses three frames of 120 film giving me four images per roll. This results in a negative that is 2 - inches by 6 f inches. The lens gives an angle of view close to 90 degrees and shooting in portrait fo rmat gives me a view from the horizon to nearly straight down.

Emp ty Places in th e Sky Bill Edison

A long time friend and flying partner, Bill Edison of Lighthouse Point, Florida passed away suddenly this June. Bill was 46. Although his wife Suzanne is known for her years of service to the AKAas a Board of Directors member and a Regional Director, Bill was known for his behind the scenes direction. Bill was an idea man, and a maticulous planner. A quiet fo rce. Along with Suzanne, Bill fo unded the New York Stunt Kite Championships, a cornerstone event in the development of the Eastern League Sport Kite Association. Bill was also a competitor, flying with his wife as "Edison Power and Flight" and later, with the "Black Sheep Squadron." Bill was an active sport kite judge, and flew often at Jones Beach and Liberty State Park. Suzanne dedicated this poem to Bill at his funeral. by this decision seems limited. A combined class will show better strength on the field and better reflect a true champion at that flying level.

And finally, many on the Committee fe lt there may be more effective ways to encourage new fliers to enter competition. (See below).

The bottom line - with the start of the new season, all "old" Novices will fly in the "new" Novice Class. Intermediates who qualified to move up will fly Experienced, other Intermediates will fly in the new Novice Class. I think it will be a more challenging, more interesting, and more exciting event for everyone that participates - even if it is harder to WIn. 2) While removing a class, AKA was also looking for better ways to encourage and support new competitors. Our conclusion was to create a series of "Beginner" events at sanctioned competitions.

Competition Event and "Beginners" would differ from Novice in that (a) they are not ranked, (b) they are much less fo rmal, and (c) AKA membership or registration fe es Class Changes for the would not be required. The idea behind the proposal was to create a process that was less intimidating for new fliers, but which introduced New Season them to the competition arena and did a better job of supporting, report by David Gomberg teaching, and encouraging them than Novice does now. The goal is to get more people involved by trying something different. Yo u are probably hearing scattered reports about changes in the I should stress that these are not required activities. However, AKAwill provide August with the start of the season. materials and support to any that do. Back in early June, in response to an email circulated to the Sport Kite Here is what one Committee member wrote: Rules Committee, I offered the observation that AKA's convoluted committee structure was keeping us from getting important work done. "We need incentives to keep new competitors corning into the sport. Instead of a quagmire offive overlapping groups, I suggested that one When we eliminated Novice, we did NOT eliminate the need to display consolidated Sport Kite Committee be formed so that issues could be leadership to get new people into the sport. The concept, and my vote properly communicated to fliers and decisions made in a timely and IN FAVOR of the new Non-Scoring structure for beginning competitors, organized fa shion. was always in the SPIRIT of promoting easier access to the sport for beginners, and to trim some EXCESS from the schedule of events. An hour afterI sent the email, my phone rang. It was AKACompetition Chair, Mike Gillard, inviting me to chair the new combined committee I believe that throwing a new flier into the current Novice scenario, with that I had proposed. I stressed that I hadn't made the suggestion because a sound system, a panel ofju dges, penalties and rules is intimidating and fun) I wanted to be in charge, but Mike persisted. And that's how I became discouraging. I'm looking for a more positive and constructive (and the new AKASport Kite Czar... experience.

With limited time before the start of the new season, I asked the The Beginner events are not so much a "competition" as they are an Committee to review the most pressing issues that have been circulating over the past year or so. Some were controversial, some were not. One of our options was, of course, wait and allow more discussion. But waiting even a month meant that the new season would begin and nothing would be changed for more than a year. So we proposed, we discussed, and we voted. Here is where we now stand. 1) For purposes of Conference Rankings and the Grand National Competitions, the Novice and Intermediate classes have been combined. This becomes effective in August and will control Convention invitations 2001 for in Billings. We will call the new class Novice.

This difficult decision was made for several reasons. First, with the addition of new events and the demand to add even more, it was fe lt that running fo ur classes was a lUXury we could no longer afford. Competi tion time schedules are extremely tight, each event requires more staff, and trophies are expensive. It was noted that STACK does not run Intermediate, although that has little bearing on what we do. * * Over the past two years, we have had an average of nine Novice fliers compete at the Grand Nationals. Last year that included both ballet and precision. So, the evidence is that the actual number of people affected

It is regretful that there was not more time be a 'learn to compete' field - one judge, one field director (the two to involve the flying community in these decisions. But as I said before, could be combined), a marked field, and a set of basic maneuvers we've been talking for several years. Waiting until the new season would (square, circle, figure eight). It always amazes me when my fe llow kiters enthusiastically throw themselves into some zany new idea and pull it off with fm esse! From reenacting Man-lifting with Cody Kites, figuring out how to connect them from a fuzzy picture in David Pelham's book, and lifting a Cabbage Patch kid into the air, to pitching in to perform an abbrevi ated fo rm of "Peter Pan," using sport kites doing ballet and single line kites for story telling, my kite friends do it! We showed that single line kites can do demos, too. We demonstrated that sport kites and single liners CAN work on the same field at the same time if each respects the other's needs. When I first joined the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites about 1980, the first thing I learned was that a pair of tangled kites is an opportunity to make a new fr iend.

I am honored to be able to gather all those friends this year into a new venture. Terry Sansom passed on the successful project he began on the Internet and he remains an email message away to guide and advise us as we - OSEK members- gather the kites for the AKAARCH KITE PROJECT 2000.

Friends are what kiting is to me. Hugs and smiles from kite people - single line fliers and sport kite fo lks - are the best part of every fe stival. Meeting new kiters, sharing the sky, the wind, the joy and freedom of flight have filledmy life for 20 years. I've learned new techniques, new materials, and new shapes from fo lks like Jose Sai.n.z and Charlie Sotich. Tiny treasures and stunning stained-glass beauties have steadily improved my skills in kite

Sharing the wealth of kite history with children in libraries, schools, and parks comes back in the delight and discovery that glitters in their young eyes. Watching dozens of orkshop sled kites dance in the air in an impossible corner of a schoolyard while my own "fancy" kite refuses to leave the ground is what it is all about. We pass on the magic of sharing and realize what we share is far more than kites in the sky. Nancy has flown kites all her life, and since 1979, she has been active in the sp ort. Her fa vorite kites are Chinese 3-stick, Deltas and Delta Conynes, Rokkakus and Sleds with ra ms. She has entered her kites in kite building competitions at the Wright Pa tterson Air Fo rce Museum 50 Kite Fest receiving her first award in 1987 and at the AKA Na tionals; Nancy has been honored as a guest kitemaker at WSIKF in Long Beach, WA , and at the Maryland International Kite Exp o in 2000. She recently received the AKA VOlunteer of the Ye ar Award. Nancy is most known fo r her banners. She is the maker of the "official " AKA Banner. She is active in the J4KA, with local kite clubs, and with sp ort kite fliers.

June and July are active in New England, as we have our two largest SJKF helped to sponsor Wildwood by giving a donation to help bring ' stunt kite events (BASKC and Newport 2000). For those unfamiliar with inside the beltway details, this meant that the guest list is submitted to the Secret Service, and there are metal detectors and name checks to keep undesirables far away. So, I was called and asked my SSN and what was my job or affiliation, and so I naturally said, "AKA" and my occupation was "Kite maker." They bought it, because it's true.

The evening started slowly. The congressmen were all late, and the wine was free, so I got bored and started introducing myself to strangers. I talked with Bill' Bradbury, Secretary of the State of Oregon, who was the only guy not wearing a tie, and who also seemed interested in AKA (my nametag said 'American Kite Flyers Associa tion' despite my careful instructions 'k-i-t-e-f-I-i-e-r-s, 'one word, not two ' to the person who took the info). I imagine people were trying to figure out where AKAgets it's money, or else who I knew well enough to get me an invitation ...

Then Clinton arrived, we all ate a nice piece of salmon and a great desert, he gave a speech, and then it was time for handshakes and photo opportunities. As he shook my hand (after Kitty came out of nowhere and somehow elbowed her way in front of me) and eyeballed my nametag, I said, "Do you like to fly kites?" He said, "Actually, yes, I do enjoy that !" So I fished out a small (one inch span) shield shaped kite made by Charlie Sotich, that I bought at the MKS auction last February. And I said, "Well, I'm actually a government employee, but tonight I am representing the American Kitefliers Association, so here's a little kite for you. It's not too big, and it's made out of a Dairy Queen napkin, but it flies!" He seemed quite pleased. I may have Above- J.R.
