OPERATION VIJAY (Kargil War 1999) No. 05/2019 AN INDIAN ARMY PUBLICATION May 2019 OPERATION VIJAY (Kargil War 1999) “Either I will come back after hoisting the tri colour or I will come wrapped in it, but I will come back for sure.” Captain Vikram Batra Captain Vikram Batra, Param Vir Chakra, 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles uring the Kargil war, Captain Vikram Batra of 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles and his Delta Company were tasked to recapture one of the most arduous and crucial peaks, Point 5140. At a height of 17000 feet, he and his men planned to approach the hill from the rear, so as to take the enemies by surprise. DThey ascended the rocky cliff but as they neared the top, the Pakistani intruders pinned them on the face of the cliff with machine gun fire. Undeterred by this, Captain Batra and five of his men climbed up and on reaching the top hurled two grenades at the machine gun positions. He single handedly killed three soldiers in close combat and despite being badly injured during the exchange, he regrouped his men and continued the mission. After a long battle, many enemy soldiers were killed and his unit won a decisive victory. His courage inspired his men to charge the enemy positions and on 20 June 1999, they captured Point 5140. ‘Chanakya …it’s Shershah reporting!! We’ve captured the post! Yeh Dil Maange More!’ Captain Vikram Batra told his Commanding Officer after securing Point 5140 (Tiger Hill). On 07 July 1999, in another operation in the area of Point 4875, his company was tasked to clear a narrow feature with sharp cuttings on either side and heavily fortified enemy defences that covered the only approach to it. For speedy operation, Captain Batra assaulted the enemy position along a narrow ridge and engaged the enemy in a fierce hand–to-hand fight killing five enemy soldiers at point blank range. Despite sustaining grave injuries, he crawled towards the enemy and hurled grenades clearing the position with utter disregard to his personal safety. Leading from the front, he rallied his men and pressed on the attack and achieved a near impossible military task in the face of heavy enemy fire. The officer, while doing so, sustained bullet injuries and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Inspired by his daredevil act, his troops fell upon the enemy with vengeance, annihilated them and captured Point 4875. Captain Vikram Batra, thus, displayed the most conspicuous bravery and leadership of the highest order in the face of the enemy and made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army. He was awarded the country’s highest Gallantry Award, Param Vir Chakra (Posthumously). His saga of bravery is truly inspirational and he continues to be called ‘Sher Shah’, a title that will remain legendary in the history of Indian Army. Today, he is an inspiring ico to millions.     No. 08/2019 AN INDIAN ARMY PUBLICATION August 2019 BATTLE OF HAJIPIR (INDO-PAK WAR 1965) MAJOR RANJIT SINGH DAYAL, PVSM, MVC akistan’s forcible attempt to annex Kashmir was defeated when India, even though surprised by the Pakistani offensive, responded with extraordinary zeal and turned the tide in a war, Pakistan thought it would win. Assuming discontent in Kashmir with India, Pakistan sent infiltrators to precipitate Pinsurgency against India under ‘OPERATION GIBRALTAR’, followed by the plan to capture Akhnoor under ‘OPERATION GRAND SLAM’. The Indian reaction was swift and concluded with the epic capture of the strategic Haji Pir Pass, located at a height of 2637 meters on the formidable PirPanjal Range, that divided the Kashmir Valley from Jammu. A company of 1 PARA led by Major (later Lieutenant General) Ranjit Singh Dayal wrested control of Haji Pir Pass in Jammu & Kashmir, which was under the Pakistani occupation. The initial victory came after a 37- hour pitched battle by the stubbornly brave and resilient troops. Major Dayal and his company accompanied by an Artillery officer started at 1400 hours on 27 August. As they descended into the valley, they were subjected to fire from the Western shoulder of the pass. There were minor skirmishes with the enemy, withdrawing from Sank. Towards the evening, torrential rains covered the mountain with thick mist. This made movement and direction keeping difficult. The men were exhausted after being in the thick of battle for almost two days. But Major Dayal urged them to move on. On reaching the base of the pass, he decided to leave the track and climb straight up to surprise the enemy.

    KARGIL OPERATION 1999 The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC). In India, the conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay which was the name of the Indian operation to clear the Kargil sector.The war is the most recent example of high-altitude warfare in mountainous terrain, and as such posed significant logistical problems for the combating sides.The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers disguised as Kashmiri militants into positions on the Indian side of the LOC which serves as the border between the two states. During the initial stages of the war, Pakistan blamed the fighting entirely on independent Kashmiri insurgents, but documents left behind by casualties and later statements by Pakistan's Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff showed involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces led by General Ashraf Rashid. The Indian Army, later supported by the Indian Air Force, recaptured a majority of the positions on the Indian side of the LOC infiltrated by the Pakistani troops and militants. Facing international diplomatic opposition, the Pakistani forces withdrew from the remaining Indian positions along the LOC. There were three major phases to the Kargil War. First, Pakistan infiltrated forces into the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir and occupied strategic locations enabling it to bring NH1 within range of its artillery fire. The next stage consisted of India discovering the infiltration and mobilising forces to respond to it.

As was the case in Kargil, Dras and Batalik Sectors, Pakistan occupied unheld heights on the Sangarh Ridge with an aim to alter the Line of Control and threaten Turtuk Sector. A company of 11 RAJ RIF was deployed in Operation THUNDERBOLT at an altitude of 18,000 feet in the Turtuk region. Th eir mission was to capture a position in the region which would facilitate the Army to monitor the movements of the enemy troops better. Captain Haneef Uddin volunteered to lead the special mission patrol consisting of one Junior Commissioned Offi cer and three other ranks. Th e party made valiant endeavours to occupy the position on night of 04 and 05 June 1999. On 06 June 1999, advancing in sub-zero temperatures along the razor sharp edge from the South-Westerly direction, the party came as close as 200 meters of the position when it was fi red upon. Captain Haneef Uddin and two other ranks received the brunt of fi re. Inspite of the grave injury, Captain Haneef Uddin, without caring for his personal safety, took position and started fi ring to pin down the enemy to extricate his team members. In the ensuing fi ring from both sides, Captain Haneef Uddin was further hit by enemy artillery and small arms fi re.

    My Kargil War Hero The Overview July 26, it was on this day 22 years ago that the Indian Army recaptured all the Indian posts in Kargil that were captured by the Pakistan Army. Since then July 26 has been observed annually, as Kargil Vijay Diwas, to honour the supreme scarifies and the exemplary courage of the Brave Hearts who laid down their lives safeguarding the frontiers of our motherland. After the Lahore Summit in 1999 the diplomatic tensions seemed to ease. But the sense of optimism seemed to be short-lived as in May 1999 Pakistan Paramilitary forces and Karshmir insurgents captured deserted but strategic posts in the Himalayan heights of Kargil. These posts were vacated by the Indian Army on the account of the inhospitable winter and were supposed to be reoccupied in spring. The Pakistani forces positioned themselves in locations that enable them to bring NH1 within its range of artillery fire. Once the scale of Pakistani incursion was realised , the Indian Army quickly moralised around 2,00,000 troops and gave a buffeting response. Backed by Indian Air Force, Indian Army launched Operation Vijay and captured the curial points of Tiger Hill and Tololing in Drass. The Army declared the mission successful on July 26, 1999; since it has been marked as the Kargil Vijay Diwas in India. Remembering the War Heroes India’s victory at the heights of the Kargil was a hard earned one. The victory came at the cost of the several supreme sacrifices by the Sons of the Soil. There is no place for absolute rebellion; violence; warrior pacifism in this conception of ethical living. Fighters and martyrs occupy an important place in the Khalsa narrative, and Sikhs are constantly reminded of the sacrifices and heroism of their co- religionists of the past. This article explores how the Sikh warrior identity is manifested in the contemporary world. It examines the Sikhs who, in the 1980s and 1990s, were involved on both sides of the Punjab crisis: those militants who fought for a Sikh homeland (“Khalistan”) and those Sikhs in the Indian army who suppressed the insurgency. The article also looks beyond the militants and soldiers to Sikhs employed in modern security- related professions, the broader issue of Sikh symbols relating to the use of force, and violence within the Sikh diaspora. An examination of the Sikhs in various parts of the world reveals additional uses and consequences of ideology, whether in enlistment in the armed forces of the states in which they live, or in the support of the militancy in India, particularly in the 1980s. The conclusion is that the modern Sikh warrior is a nuanced actor behaving in various ways, some overt and some subtle: the warrior is willing to physically fight those perceived to be tyrannous, but most initiatives have shifted to pursuing justice through non-violent means, such as legal struggles for civil rights.
