Dear friends,

It’s All Saints on 1st November. From its earliest days, the Church has recognised as its foundation stones those heroes of the faith whose lives has excited others to holiness and has assumed a communion be- tween Church on earth and the Church in heaven. Celebrating All Saints began in the 4th C. At first it was observed after Pentecost to link the gift of the Holy Spirit to those who have given their lives to witness the faith but has moved to ‘All Hallows-tide’ in November, probably to link it with a Celtic (or possibly German!) festival celebrating those who’d gone be- fore us. This year I’m truly privileged to celebrate All Saints at the High Altar in Durham Cathedral !

All Souls Day follows hot on the heels of All Saints, where believers acknowledge that we carry out our lives with the mutual support of all the people of God. The Church who has gone before us is bound to- gether with the Church who are with us now in a communion of prayer. Since our foundation Christians have recognised that the assembled people of God, is at its most perfect when it recognises its unity in God’s love with all who’ve said and say now, ‘Jesus is Lord’. I am also truly privileged to celebrate this for both Elwick and Hart at St Mary Magda- lene, Hart Wed 1st at 6.30pm.

On another matter…that of Deanery Planning for our 12 Hartlepool churches, at present many of our churches have agreed a way forward to cope with our 12 churches having to be supported by just 7 priests. The 3 central town churches of Stranton, St Luke’s and St Aidan and St Columba are still undergoing consultation to see how best to configure them with 2 priests. If when the final Deanery Plan emerges and further- more it is accepted by Bishop’s Council please be assured that Hart and Elwick will remain as a pair supported by one priest. So no changes there. I imagine the consultations for the central 3 will continue until the springtime of next year. I’ll keep you posted how we get on!

So it’s onwards and upwards to village fairs, Remembrance Sunday and Carol Services!

I hope you are prepared for the journey of celebrations over the coming weeks!

Every blessing, Revd. Canon Janet 3 Regular Church Services

Heavy Goods Vehicles – The PC has become more and more concerned at the number of large vehicles using the village roads despite the village having a 7.5 tonne weight restriction. This has been raised with the Police who suggest that anyone seeing such a vehicle should make a note of the vehicle registration and Company name and report it to the Traffic Com- missioners Northern Area who should take action.

Red Gap Community Fund – the Parish Council has been granted the full sum requested to upgrade the playing field facilities and would now go ahead with obtaining final quotes for work to start after the winter.

Village Matters – a number of issues have been raised with the Ward Councillor including the footpath between Elwick and Dalton Piercy which is overgrown and the general rubbish along the verges around the village and on the road to Hartlepool.

Village Bus Service – Councillors noted, with pleasure, that the 65 bus service run by Paul’s Travel was still able to provide a service to the vil- lage.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on 27th November at 7.00pm in the W.I. Hall.

ELWICK LADIES FELLOWSHIP Ten ladies spent a most enjoyable afternoon at the home of Sylvia Sadler and it was a lovely surprise to have Marion Tobin join us again. The first part of our meeting was spent discussing how the letters of the word THINK could make us “think” before we speak. T - is it true? H - is it helpful? I - is it inspiring? N - is it nice? K - is it kind? _____food for thought indeed.

Our next task set by Mary Scott was the alphabet. We had to name something we were thankful for starting with each letter of the alphabet—some very good answers were forthcoming but X and Z proved a bit of a problem.

Thank you Sylvia for your hospitality and our next meeting is on Monday 13th November at the home of Mary Carswell, 4 Hillcrest Grove at 2.00pm.

ELWICK WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Members were welcomed to the October meeting; the minutes of the previous meet- ing were read and signed and the financial statement given. Details were given for the Christmas Lunch followed by a performance by The Jersey Boys at Hardwick Hall, on Wednesday 13th December. Our speaker for the evening was Mr Peter Stemmer, ’s Town Cryer who looked resplendent in his tricorn hat, lacy jabot, wine coloured frock coat and floral waistcoat; black breeches and buckled shoes completed his outfit.. He told us how the town cryers had proclaimed the good and bad news to the masses throughout his- tory and how the tradition is being kept alive by dedicated men and women in our towns and cities. Peter had been in the Army and when he read his proclamation his booming voice and shrill bell could nearly be heard all around the village. The competition was a bell, which was won by Kath Rutter, with Doris Morrell sec- ond and a china bell with flowers won the third prize. Doris Morrell also won the raffle. The next meeting is our Annual Meeting on Monday 7th November. The competition is a home-made Christmas Tree Decoration.
