Uaunton BARNICOTT &- PEARCE, ATHEN^UM PRESS 1907 BARNICOTT AND PEARCE PRINTERS Preface. T is usual to write something as a preface, and this generally appears to be to make some excuse for having written at all. In a pre- face to Tom Toole and his Friends — a very interesting book published a few years ago, by Mrs. Henry Sandford, in which the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, together with the Wedgwoods and many other eminent men of that day figure,—the author says, on one occasion, when surrounded by old letters, note books, etc., an old and faithful servant remon- " " strated with her thus : And what for ? she " demanded very emphatically. There's many a hundred dozen books already as nobody ever reads." Her hook certainly justified her efforts, and needed no excuse. But what shall I say of this } What for do 1 launch this little book, which only refers to the parish ot Mylor ^ vi Preface. The great majority of us are convinced that the county of our birth is the best part of Eng- land, and if we are folk country-born, that our parish is the most favoured spot in it. With something of this idea prompting me, I have en- deavoured to look up all available information and documents, and elaborate such by personal recollections and by reference to authorities.

Situated just beside the North Road at the Pendeen end, Wheal Hearle comprises two engine houses which were home to a ten inch winding engine and a thirty inch pumping engine. It was in production from about 1855 and, at its peak, employed just over one hundred men , women and boys. The mine appears to have been short lived with little reported after 1865. Within these Jenkyn’s Tregunnon areas, good quality slate and particularly slate of roofing quality is of patchy occurrence. • Cornwall Industrial Settlements Initiative ST. JUST
Cornwall Industrial Settlements Initiative ST. JUST (St Just Area) April 2002 CORNWALL INDUSTRIAL SETTLEMENTS INITIATIVE Conservation Area Partnership Name: ST JUST Study Area: St Just Mining Area Council: Penwith District Council NGR: SW 3731 Location: North-west coast of West Existing Yes. Penwith, west of Penzance CA? Main period of 1820-60 Main Mining industrial settlement industry: growth: Industrial history and significance Originally a small medieval churchtown, St Just grew into the principal centre of the old mining area, with growth dependent on the industry since at least the 17th century. The rapid expansion of the 1830s created a boom town, with rows of cottages laid out on a fixed plan that make it more like a northern English industrial town than any other settlement in the area. With a market developed by the 17th century, the industrial period saw increasing development of the commercial and service sectors in the town, along with religious and educational establishments. Even after the failure of local mines in the 1860s, St Just continued to provide and even expand these facilities for the wider area, and is still the main population and service centre west of Penzance Other comments The existing Action Group set up by the local authority would be well placed to pursue many of the objectives of this and other recent reports on the town. This settlement will either form part of the proposed Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Bid, or will be considered an important part of the context for the Bid. Recommendations Historic areas • Changes are proposed to the existing CA boundary.

  • St Agnes Parish
197 THE PARISH OF ST. AGNES by Thomas Tonkin EDITORIAL NOTE Thomas Tonkin was born in 1678, son of Hugh Tonkin of Trevaunance in St. Agnes. On his father's death in 1711 he inherited the estate, but proved improvident and lost it to a mortgagee in 1719. He spent the rest of his life at Mevagissey and Gorran and died in 1742, leaving many important MSS concerned with Cornish History; for a full account of his life and MSS see Thomas Tonkin, an Appreciation of a Neglected Historian by H. L. Douch (JRIC 1962, 145). This account of his native parish was evidently written between 1710 and 1720, but he continued to add to it at least until 1733. The version here printed is from his MS 'A' pp. 162-84, with corrections and additions from MS 'H' pp. 6-16; both these MSS are in the custody of the Institution, and the former includes the genealogical trees and arms of the Tonkin, Beauchamp and Croker families, and a drawing of a Roman coin found near St. Agnes Beacon, which are not here reproduced. No attempt has been made at critical annotation of Tonkin's text, but it should be noted that his interpretations of place- names are frequently mistaken, e.g. Kyvur Ankou, where the four Hundreds met, is Cornish keverango, 'hundreds', not 'the place of death'. Gaps and defects in the MS are indicated thus,.... Thanks are due to Mr. R. D. Penhallurickforthemap.and to Mrs. A. C. Bizley for loan of the block of Tonkin's drawing of Trevaunance House.
