CODE OF CONDUCT COMPLAINT WITHDRAWN A Code of Conduct complaint lodged February 26 against a member of Council was withdrawn Friday afternoon, according to John Leach, Aurora’s Town Clerk. The complaint was filed with the Town just hours before Councillors voted on a resolution to repeal their existing Code of Conduct and roll its contents into a newly drafted Code of Ethics, which would have much of the same guidelines but fewer penalties than the old document. Letters to the editor Machell’s Corners Downtown development needs to meet common goals: H.E.A.T. The Heritage East Aurora Taxpayers, also known as the ‘Wells St. Neighbours’, would like to share information about the Heritage Conservation District Study for our downtown heritage neighbourhood. In addition to the lovely old residences, many which have heritage designations, our neighbourhood houses the Aurora Library, Aurora Cultural Centre, former Library and Fire Hall/ Senior’s Centre, Victoria Hall, former Wells St. Public School/ Lofts, plus four churches. Many of these publically used buildings are historic or have historic components. The oldest natural landscape – Town Park, the home of the Aurora Farmer’s Market and Artisan Fair –is also in our neighbourhood. Close by on Wellington St. is the restored heritage GO station, several lawyers’ offices and other businesses in restored heritage homes. Councillor John Abel’s letter to the editor (February 19th) describes our neighbourhood as being part of the Yonge Wellington Downtown Core (YWDC), and that it is a heritage district. However, it is not a heritage district yet, though, becoming Aurora’s second heritage district is a goal that many Wells St. Neighbours have worked towards since November 2007. Most people in the community believe the historic features of our downtown neighbourhood are equally important to property owners as well as those who work in or visit our community. Council agreed by endorsing our request and approving funds for a Heritage Conservation District Study ($60K) in February 2011. The Terms of Reference for the study were approved February 2012. A Heritage Consulting Firm was selected this past summer. Due to resignations in the Planning Department, including the Heritage Planner, no further action has been taken until recently. Many Wells St. Neighbours participated in the Promenade Study and the Streetscape To submit a letter to the editor please send your email to Study mentioned in Mr. Abel’s letter.
