From the Chief of the Bureau of Navigation: Lt. Commander Michael H. Kernodle, U.S.B. Lieutenant Douglas L. Mesker, A-0, U.S.N.R.

LIGHTER-THAN-AIR.

The following-named officers have been selected for training ift lighter-than- air :

5 Lieutenant (jg) William Randolph Peeler, U,,S.nT. lt " Cecil Edward Blount, U.S.11. Ensign Wi1lm-d M-,ii.rhead Hanger, U.S,B. I' Robert Jay Williams, U.S.N. " Dani21 McElroy Entler, Jr., U.S.N., W Harlan Good Kirkpatrick, U.S.N. ------LIEUTElJANTS - Si31 DUTY. A preliminwy survey indicates considerable shortage of lieutenant:, in combat- ant ships for the fiscal year 1940. The Bureau will consider requests for an ex- tensien & sea duty frGm officers junior to the Class of 1924 who are due for shore duty in the Spring of 1939. This does not apply to officers serving in submarines unless they wish to be tramferrcd to surface vessels, or to naval aria- tian.

NEN SHIPS.

The President of the United Statos has selected thc following names for the new battleships, cruisers, and aircraft carrier: Battleships- BB57 - RLPJAMA BB58 .. INDIANA BB5b - MASSACHUSETTS BB60 - SOUTH DAKOTA Cruisers CL51 - ATUfJTA CW2 - JUNEAU CL53 SU31EGO I.. - ..CL54 - snr; JUAN --Ajrcraf't Carrier CV8 - HORNET The name "Hernet" was selected by the President in 1936 for the next aireraft carrier to be oonstructed which is to be known as the CV8. -fJEw SHIPS (contd.).

Batt 1 ships'BB57 to BB60 and Cruisers CL51 and CL52 were authorize( to be constructed by Ehe Act of March 27, 1934. Cruisers CL53 and CL54 and the Aircraft Carrier CV8 were authorized by the Act of ?!day 17, 1938.

KfiRBOX SERVICES. ..I I On 16 the Bureau requested Cornanding Officers of all ships to submit at the elzd of each quarter a report of expenditures for pilotage, tqwage, wharfage, and similar services, showi'ng' the locations where the charges were in- curred, In a number of instances the' report of expenditures by locations does not agree in amount with the expenditures reported on S, & A. Form 20 for such services. It is requested that the quarterly report of expcnditui-es by locations be rccon- ciled with S. & A. Form 20 before forwarding to the BbA.eau.

If no expenditures were incurred for harbor services, it is not necessary to submit the report of expenditures by locations.

Listed belwr, by vessels to which attached, are the names of 95 enlisted men who have been seLYcted by preliminary written' examination to attend the Naval Acad- emy Preparatory School beginning 1 at the U, S. Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Va.

Since there are not enough successful candidates to fill the allowed quota of 100 (even if all men sclected for the school should be able to pass the entrance examinations), it is the desire of the Bureau of'Navigation that candidates of ability who have insufficient sea duty for selection for the school be encouraged to continue their stv.dies at sea as prospctive candidates for the Naval Academy Entrance Examinations to be given in April, 1939.

It is also desired that candidates who are not able to enter the school be- cause of minor physical deficiencies be encouraged to correct these if, in the opinion of the medical officers of their respective vessels, such deficiencies could be corrected prior to April, 1939.

Candidates who, because of insufficient sea duty by 1 November 1938 are per- mitted to enter the school at a later date should spend as much time as practicable in the study of the required subjects prior to transfer to the school.
