On behalf of Atlanta Track Club, we are excited to have you join us as we celebrate this historic edition of the world’s largest 10K on July 4. Atlanta Track Club, our event sponsors, our organizing committee, the City of Atlanta and more than 3,500 dedicated volunteers are looking forward to making this year’s event unforgettable for all 60,000 participants. For the past 10 months, we have been working closely with the mayor’s office, the city’s police and fire departments, Fulton County Emergency Management Agency, emergency medical service units and other health and safety organizations to establish race guidelines and safety procedures related to weather and other possible issues. We ask that you pay attention to our Event Alert System, which is a color-coded flag system located at the start line and at hydration stations along the course and the finish. This year’s special edition of this 16-year tradition of a marathon, half marathon, 5K and kids’ races takes place at Atlanta Motor Speedway. From start to finish, it has been planned as a way to safely keep Atlanta moving during the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. As COVID is slowly being reined in, Atlanta Motor Speedway’s size is exactly what the doctor ordered for this year’s socially distanced, race-by-appointment marathon experience.     November 2018 - Susan Jones Congratulations to our November Volunteer of the Month, Susan Jones. Susan has been volunteering with Atlanta Track Club for over twenty years. She currently is the Pace Team Co-Coordinator for the Invesco QQQ Thanksgiving Half Marathon and Publix Atlanta Marathon & Half Marathons. She recommends that new volunteers embrace the camaraderie of runners, staff and fellow volunteers. Do you remember your first time volunteering with Atlanta Track Club? I think my first time volunteering was with a program called Women on the Move in the 1990s with Atlanta Track Club staffer Janet Monk was in charge of it. I was a volunteer training leader helping women prepare for races. What is your favorite Atlanta Track Club event? Why? My favorite event is the Women's In-Training program and the Atlanta Women's 5K. It's a celebration of friends and it's social yet competitive with teams. I also love the Invesco QQQ Thanksgiving Half Marathon. My first full was the Thanksgiving Atlanta Marathon when I turned 40, 24 years ago. What is one of your best memories from volunteering at any race? At each race, my best memories are seeing the fun everyone is having and cheering the runners to the finish and seeing their excitement of completing the race. This is especially meaningful to me from working with In-Training and the Pace Team. What is your favorite thing about volunteering with Atlanta Track Club? What brings you back? I absolutely love the staff and support they give the volunteers. Plus I love running; the social part of it and the friends that I have made through Atlanta Track Club.

    VOLUNTEER August A Newsletter for the Shepherd Auxiliary & Volunteers news 2019 Volunteer Spotlight: Roger Greene If you have a conversation with Roger Greene, Family Support Services volunteer, you will undoubtedly hear about his family and faith. Those values are at the core of who he is and helped sustain him through his son’s spinal cord injury and rehabilitation at Shepherd Center. Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as the middle of three boys, Roger grew up in a very large extended family that was rooted in church and service. His maternal grandmother had 11 children, most of whom grew up and settled in the same area, so Roger grew up alongside more than 30 first cousins, each being taught that God and family were central to a complete life. Roger participated in worship each week and sang in the choir in his home church where his relatives sang with him and/or filled a lot of the pews. Year after year, when any family member had problems, the rest of the extended family stepped in to help in any way possible. Together, they have celebrated life’s victories and leaned on each other through the hard times. Roger’s father was in the Army, so Roger knew from an early age that Above: Roger Greene enjoys volunteering at Shepherd Center in his role as a Family Driver. he wanted to serve in the military, too. After graduating from high school and then attending college to learn computer programming, he enlisted in the Army for his career.
