We’ve introduced a racing league, promoted a national golf tournament and rebranded an Olympic gymnastics organization. But one of our most satisfying assignments has been to work with the IHSAA to promote the value of education-based athletics. We’ve been doing it for more than 30 years. And we’ve loved every minute.

Avon Earns Back-to-Back 4A Championships No. 2 Avon dropped the opening set but powered through top-ranked Carmel in the next three for a 17-25, 25-19, 25- 14, 25-18 victory in the Class 4A state championship match at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena. Avon (37-3) got the better of Carmel for the second year in a row in the final match earning back-to-back champion- ships in their third consecutive appearance in the finals. A year ago, Avon claimed a five-set thriller between the two powers but Carmel had swept Avon on the road on Aug. 27 and was aiming for its first volleyball title in school history this evening. Three Orioles finished with double-figure kills with Beth Prince leading the way with 16. Calle’ Weddle added 13 and Rebekah Strange 11. On the defensive, Shelby Con- nors was responsible for two blocks solo and five assists and Rachel Griffin, the mental attitude award winner, led all with 17 digs and 34 assists as the setter. Carmel’s Carly Skjodt led all players with 20 kills. The Greyhounds (37-2) had entered the match with only one loss back on Aug. 24 in the second week of the season and hadn’t dropped a set to an opponent since Oct. 1, a span of 16 matches. Head coach Scott McQueen’s Orioles closed out the year with 26 straight victories. Rich Coleman was the Carmel coach.

Brebeuf Jesuit Sweeps FW Concordia Lutheran for 3A Title Ninth-ranked Brebeuf Jesuit won three tight games for an unexpected sweep of Fort Wayne Concordia, 26-24, 27-25, 25-23, to win the IHSAA Class 3A state championship match at Muncie’s Worthen Arena. It was the fourth volleyball state title in 11 years for the Braves (20-12) to go along with trophies won in 2003, 2005 and 2009. It was the third runner-up finish for Concordia in- cluding a loss to Brebeuf in this same match 10 years ago. Seventh-ranked Concordia entered the match after beat- ing three straight top six foes including a sweep of No. 1 Mishawaka Marian last Saturday. After dropping the first game, the Cadets appeared to be in control in Game 2 with a 23-19 advantage but Brebeuf rallied to steal it 27-25 to really change the momentum of the match.

Sierra Witham, the mental attitude award winner, led Brebeuf with 22 kills with Courtney Simons adding 11 of her own. Becca Anglen tallied 16 digs and McKena Estes 28 assists for the Braves. Tionna Williams led Concordia with 18 kills with Grace Miller digging out 24 balls and Rachel Kammeyer had four service aces. Coached by Anna Huse, Brebeuf also became the first volleyball state champion with more than 10 losses in a season. The Braves entered the state tournament just 13-12. Concordia and coach Tricia Miller capped a terrific season at 29-8.

Providence Sweeps its Way to First Volleyball State Title Top-ranked Providence swept its way through this year’s Class 2A volleyball state tournament defeating unranked Hammond Bishop Noll, 25-18, 25-15, 25-20, in the final match at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena.

It was the first volleyball state championship for Providence (36-4), a school of 492 students in Clarksville, Ind. just north of Louisville, Ky. It was the school’s seventh appear- ance in the state finals and comes on the heels of last year’s runner-up finish in this match.

After losing its fourth match of the year on Sept. 25, Provi- dence swept through its final 17 opponents, 44-0.

Taylor Wilson led Providence with 14 kills in the match fol- lowed by Haley Libs with 11. Wilson was in on seven blocks while Libs led all with 15 digs. Patricia Mattingly led the Pioneers with 33 assists. Bishop Noll’s Carly Cappello led the Warriors with 14 kills.

Terri Purichia guided the Pioneers to the school’s best sea- son with only three seniors while the future also looks bright for the young Bishop Noll squad with only four seniors on its roster. The Warriors were the only newcomer to this year’s state championship matches and finished 30-10 under head coach David Rodriguez. Barr-Reeve Finally Breaks Through for State Championship Barr-Reeve made its own history in defeating Lafayette Central Catholic, 3-1, in the IHSAA Class A Volleyball state championship match at Worthen Arena in Muncie. The second-ranked Vikings (38-2) took the first two games of the match before finishing off the No. 6 Knights in the fourth for a 25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21 victory to become the first Barr-Reeve team to win a state championship. Their title finally arrived after the school settled for the runner-up spot three times in 1998, 2001 and 2008. It was the Vikings’ fifth appearance in the volleyball state finals. Barr-Reeve, a school of 213 students in Daviess County in southwestern Indiana, scored on 50% of their attempts for the match including a 61% mark in the opening game. Central Catholic staved off elimination winning Game 3 hitting 57% and forcing 12 Barr-Reeve hitting errors. Hania Sisco lead the Vikings with 19 kills for a .286 hitting percentage while Tiara Kenny converted on 10 kills. Jenna Knepp, the mental attitude award winner, assisted on 36 of those and Hannah Bullock dug out 26 attempts on defense. Cameron Onken had 18 kills and Emily Denhart 13 for Lafayette Central Catholic. It was Barr-Reeve’s fourth win over a top six opponent in their last five matches under coach Amber DoCoursey. Central Catholic, which was making its fourth appearance including the 2010 state championship under coach Brad McCarter, finished 28-11. IHSAA - Pure Spirit. Pure Sport.
