From the Pastor

To the parish family of St. Martha, The Scripture readings for the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time invite us to reflect on how we are called to become disciples in the Kingdom even though we may face much difficulty and suffering in the process. It is similar to the centuries old question about why does God allow bad things to happen to the good people he calls to serve. One of my priest classmates experienced great physical and mental suf- fering in his life from practically the beginning of his first pastoral assignment. A few months before he died in 2005 he wrote, “Unwanted suffering, undeserved crosses have, I’m sure, been laid on the shoulders of every human being in one way or another. Physical disease or handicaps, mental or emotional suffering, anxiety, loneliness, boredom … always bring with them the question, ‘Why?’” He pointed out that early on in the Old Testament some thought that hardship in life was sent as a punishment, either for one’s own sins or for those of one’s family. Later the authors of Sacred Scripture began to stress the notion that God sends suffering as a way to test the faith and loyalty of his people. We encounter this teaching in our second reading for today’s liturgy that comes from the Letter to the Hebrews. The following advice is given, “Endure your trials as disci- pline … At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.” My classmate had a very difficult life and struggled mightily for 38 years of priestly ministry. He was nev- er able to join us for our class reunions which we organized every five years. He found it quite demanding to do simple parish ministry. However, he did become a much-loved homilist, chaplain, and spiritual director for hundreds of people in his faith community in North Dakota. He once wrote about his own personal discovery that in the Gospels Jesus shows us how to embrace suffering as redemptive. Today’s Gospel account de- scribes this insight in terms of entering God’s Kingdom by the “narrow gate.” Demands will be made on all of us who hope for a place in the Kingdom. These demands may prove very burdensome and may require of us much patience, perseverance, and humility. Jesus does not promise to remove these de- mands from our lives, only that he will be with us in our trials. He teaches us that if discipline is to have meaning for us and be redemptive, it must become self-discipline. My classmate con- cluded his reflections by stating, “Suffering is never explained by asking, ‘Where does it come from?’ or ‘Why me?’ Rather it is explained by asking, ‘What do I do with it?’” Let us pray that the Lord will teach us to carry our cross through the narrow gate into the company of our heavenly Father. Borjork-Marbach, DDS (Familia is an affiliate of Mission Network and is sponsored by – Legionaries of Christ) To my beloved parishioners of St. Martha, Most of you are now aware that Ace and I are moving to Mukilteo, a suburb north of Seattle, Washington, at the end of September. We have sold Kingwood Music School and will now fulfill our dream of retiring in the Pacific Northwest. I would like to sincerely thank you for the opportunity of serving our parish for the past 25 years. With my love for you and my deep passion for music, I gladly shared my God-given gifts and you encouraged me with your praises and compli- ments. I will miss providing piano & organ music for our liturgies but I will mostly miss leading the Adult Choir. I will leave with many pleasant memories of having played for your families’ baptisms, weddings and funerals. Thank you for the fun of traveling with fellow parishioners to pilgrimages, cruises and many Choir trips. Thank you to the Deacons and the St. Martha Staff. Lastly, I am most thankful beyond measure to Msgr. Chester and all his parochial vicars, who have come and gone, for helping my family grow spiritually and musically. The parish of St. Martha will forever hold a special place in my heart. The Parish is very gracious to host a send off reception on Sunday, September 8 at 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm at the Wood- land Hills campus. Please give me the chance to thank you personally on that day. I hope to see you there. Sincerely yours, Lita Consolacion

Hearts Afire: A Personal Encounter with Jesus In this Year of Faith, it is the desire of the Church for each person to deepen his or her relation- ship with Jesus Christ. The Pew surveys, the April 2013 article in Time magazine (“Evangélicos”), and other surveys all say that people want to experience Jesus Christ in a personal way. One of the key take-away lessons from the 2013 Hearts Afire retreats was Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s simple philosophy: “Pray and Trust.” A group of individuals, including members of St. Martha parish, have undertaken the challenge to help others experience Christ through the Jesus Prayer, a powerful tool and the most ancient form of contemplative pray- er in the Church. (It is often been mentioned by Fr. Alfonso and some of the deacons.) To this end, several activities have been undertaken. The first was the production of a booklet entitled Hearts Afire: A Personal Encounter with Jesus, which provides an introduction to the unique mystical tradition within the Catholic Church. Second, the group has developed workshops on prayer which are available to any group upon request. All this is an effort to share with people a method to develop a deep, personal relationship with the Living Lord in the silent recesses of their hearts. The Hearts Afire booklet is available at the Fullness of Truth bookstore, located at 1110 Kingwood Drive or by contacting Molly at the parish office. The cost of the booklet is $6.00. Workshops on Prayer can be request- ed through the parish office or website, www.hearts-afire.net. “God waits for us to approach Him through prayer” 50th Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass celebration The 2013 Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass honor- ing couples celebrating their Golden (50th) Anniversary of marriage in the Catholic Church will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 3 p.m. Whether or not a couple attends the cere- mony, they are eligible to receive a special recognition. Couples wishing to participate are asked to register on- line by visiting www.archgh.org/50thWedding. Please fill out all the information requested and make sure that the name of each couple is typed exactly as they wish them to appear on their recognition. Deadline for registration is August 25th, 2013 at noon; soon after, the archdiocesan Office of Family Life Ministry will send registered cou- ples an electronic message with detailed information about their participation in the Jubilee Mass. Registration will not be processed if the information about the Catholic Wedding cannot be verified and/or if the fee of $25 dol- lars per couple is not received before August 25th. Each couple will be able to bring a maximum of 8 family mem- bers or friends to the Mass.
