Local Government - Area Update

Now that we have a new Prime Minister and a new District Council (RDC) it’s a good time to update you all on local issues involving North County Council (NYCC). Also see my reports at: www.visitthorntonledale.co.uk/parish-council/in-touch-nycc-news

The Chairman of NYCC makes historic visit to Thornton Le Dale We were delighted to welcome NYCC Chairman in August to officially open The Nature Trail at Thornton Le Dale pond. In his opening remarks, he thanked the volunteers who worked on this project and all volunteers in , saying that in his view, voluntary workers were an invaluable group, undertaking

a wide variety of projects and could never be thanked enough.

My Locality Grant has enabled a series of small community projects around our villages. These range from support for . the refreshed Lockton Cricket Club, improvements to the pond as seen above and a simple dropped kerb at Allerston. I try to maximise this grant by aiming it at projects that will attract match funding. Please contact me for further details.

Thornton Dale Joint Ward meeting

Many of the issues our small villages face are shared. Along with my corporate meetings, twice a year I hold a joint meeting with key representatives from a variety of village associated authorities including our Parish Councils, Ryedale District Council and The Forestry Commission. At our August meeting in Ebberston, our main agenda item was a presentation by NYCC Highways on speeding through our villages. Addressing this problem hinges on the 3 E’s: ▪ Enforcement - by the police ▪ Engineering - North Yorkshire County Council ▪ Education - Multi agencies, but really this should be everybody’s business.

Water courses and drainage channels running through our villages are important features but potentially very damaging if not maintained. A NYCC commissioned report will be brought to the September PC meeting detailing how we intend to protect our village from flooding. This report draws on meetings with our flood prevention officer and the work I have undertaken with The Thornton Beck Group. Key issues are weed and siltation along with better maintenance of the highway’s drainage network.

The deliberate ambiguity here serves to highlight the complexities we encounter when trying to pin down Local Government. Your valuable prize of course is that being better informed gives you a greater chance of getting your issues resolved. Don’t forget, if you have access to the internet, you can self-report many issues at www.northyorks.gov.uk This is a great self- service tool which saves both time and money because the report goes straight to the person who undertakes the job and you get a full audit trail.
