  • Cruise Line Enters New York for First Time
Contact: Mary Schimmelman [email protected] 206.733.2970 Agency: Percepture Sally Spaulding [email protected] Windstar Takes Manhattan: Cruise Line Enters New York for First Time Boutique Luxury Cruise Line Plans First-Ever Itineraries in New England & Canada, with Highlights of Boston, New York, Montreal, Quebec City, and More Seattle, WA, March 15, 2017 — Start spreading the news, Windstar Cruises will be sailing into (and out of) Manhattan on its first-ever itineraries in New England and Canada beginning summer/fall 2018. Windstar’s 212-guest all-suite yacht Star Pride will embark on four new sailings (with five sail dates) that span nine to 16 days, offering leisurely opportunities to enjoy fall foliage and discover charming New England coastal towns, historic gems like Boston and Newport, and the seductively old world appeal of the Canadian Maritimes and Quebec. Star Pride will arrive in New York for the first time via Iceland. This announcement comes on the heels of news that the small ship cruise line, headquartered in Seattle, will be sailing to Alaska and along Canada’s west coast aboard Star Legend, a sister ship to Star Pride, in spring/summer 2018. The company has not sailed in North America in recent years, so the addition of both regions is a major development for the company, which operates primarily in Europe, the Caribbean/Central America, and French Polynesia. "New York is a city of legendary over-achievers, and we have every intention of over delivering on our brand’s New England and Canada experiences, including our maiden call to Manhattan with Star Pride,‖ said Windstar President John Delaney.

  • Tourists' Perceptions of Risk in Ocean Cruising
NAVIGATING UNCERTAINTY: TOURISTS' PERCEPTIONS OF RISK IN OCEAN CRUISING JENNIFER HOLLAND A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2019 Abstract Social understanding of risk has become increasingly prominent in the last two decades, reflecting a growing concern with societal and global uncertainty. Understanding how tourists feel about risk is crucial because the presence of risk, whether real or perceived, has the potential to change tourist decision-making. However, risk is not well understood in travel, and particularly limited in relation to cruise holidays. The aim of this thesis is to examine how the perception of risk is conceptualized in ocean cruising and how this may potentially influence tourist decision-making. Drawing on a constructivist ontology, the qualitative research employed focus groups and semi-structured interviews with cruisers and non-cruisers. Data was gathered using image elicitation, which illuminated thoughts and feelings about cruising and revealed how risk may be interpreted in the cruise context. This study recognizes the positionality of the researcher, and applying reflexivity, acknowledges the researcher’s own experience, sense of identity with cruises, and passion for the research topic. The complexities of positionality revealed specific methodological challenges and opportunities. Thematic analysis revealed tourists’ interpretation of risk in ocean cruising is complex, and current conceptualizations of risk are inadequate to explain risk perceptions in cruising. The findings revealed valuable insight into the way in which self-congruity potentially influences a cruise as a holiday choice for both cruisers and non-cruisers. While some cruisers perceive cruising as an opportunity for self-expression and to mitigate time and financial risk, this study illuminates how some non-cruisers perceive the familiarity of a cruise as a risk to their self-concept.

  • Case Study for Small Cruise Ships in Key West
Case Study for Small Cruise Ships in Key West (It’s not a ban.) If enacted by voters, the amendments to the city charter will reduce the size of cruise ships that call on Key West and the number of passengers that disembark each day. Cruise ships with the capacity to carry 1,300 or more persons (passengers and crew) will be prohibited; and the maximum number of persons disembarking each day will be limited to 1,500. This would allow for one small cruise ship of 1,300-capacity, or two very small cruise ships of 750-capacity. Prior to the “no-sail” order issued by the CDC, Key West was scheduled to receive 29 port calls by 11 qualifying vessels in calendar 2020. Some who are opposed to the referenda’s passage have used this figure to claim that the amendments would cause a 95% reduction in visits by cruise ships. Their estimate assumes a 0% increase to port calls by small ships over current figures. However, the amendments were drafted with the goal of increasing port calls by qualifying small cruise ships. Key West is one of the most desirable destinations in a very desirable region. Its unparalleled architecture, history, and subtropical climate and ecology make it a worldwide draw. The relatively low number of small ships in the past owes partly to the fact that small cruise ships are generally averse to calling on ports that are dominated by large cruise ships The amendments will only emphasize the fact that Key West is ideally suited to small cruise ships.
