588-640 CE Kent • 596 CE: Pope Gregory sent Augustine to convert Anglo-Saxon England. He began in Kent converting King Aethelberht and his royal court. • 601CE: Aethelberht appointed Augustine as "Archbishop of Canterbury", giving him power and control over the clergy of native Britons. The Celtic Bishops refused to acknowledge his authority.

604-665 CE Essex • 604 CE: Sæberht of Essex is baptised by Mellitus. He dies in 616. Sexred and Sæward of Essex are crowned leading to pagan resurgence. They drove Melitus out and “encouraged their people to return to the old gods”. • 653 CE: Essex remained pagan until Oswiu of Northumbria persuaded Sigeberht the Good to be baptized • 660 CE : Swithhelm of Essex is crowned: pagan resurgence but he is evangelised by Æthelwold of East Anglia and is baptised in 662 CE. He dies in 665 CE. • 665 CE : Sighere of Essex leads a pagan resurgence. Jaruman is sent by Wulfhere of to reconvert the East .

604-630 CE East Anglia • 604 CE: Rædwald is baptized from Mellitus in Kent • 627 CE: Eorpwald is baptized by Paulinus. 627 CE: Eorpwald was killed by Ricberht. • 627 CE: Ricberht , it is assumed, reverted to heathen rule for approx 3 years. • 630 CE: Sigeberht of East Anglia returns from exile in Gaul. and is crowned King. He and his people followed the Roman tradition

653-655 CE Mercia • 653 CE: King Penda allowed Christian missionaries to begin preaching . His son Peada was baptised. Peada had accepted baptism in order to marry Alhflæd, the daughter of Oswiu of Bernicia. • 655 CE: Peada is crowned becoming the first Christian king. Unusually Mercia had no official relapse into paganism.

675-681 CE Sussex • 675 CE: Æthelwealh is baptised probably as a condition of marrying the Christian Queen Eafa • 681 CE: Wilfrid begins preaching to begin converting the general population. King Æthelwealh gave Wilfrid land in Selsey where he founded Selsey Abbey. • 685 CE: Cædwalla, who was now King of , invaded Sussex and killed Æthelwealh.

603-685 CE Wessex • 603 CE: Augustine of Canterbury begins preaching (possibly apocryphal) • 635 CE: Cynegils of Wessex and Cwichelm of Wessex are baptised • 643 CE: Cenwalh is crowned leading to a heathen resurgence for 12 years. In 655 CE: Cenwalh returns from exile, now baptized • 676 CE: Centwine is crowned, Heathen resurgence but abdicated to become a Christian monk • 685 CE : Cædwalla is crowned, unbaptized but pro-Christian

661-686 CE Isle of Wight • 661 CE: Wulfhere of Mercia invades, islanders forcibly baptized. He then leaves the island and they immediately return to Heathenism. Wight remained pagan until 686 when it was invaded by the Christian sympathiser Cædwalla of Wessex. • 686 CE: Cædwalla of Wessex invades, islanders ethnically cleansed and Kingdom annexed. The Isle of Wight was incorporated into the Kingdom of Wessex. King Arwald was the last English King to die a pagan.
