But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy. -

This hybridization of registers has been explored since the very start but, like most aspects of our day-to-day, it is an idea that is constantly evolving and reinventing itself. This reinvention of ideas can be compared to André Bazin’s belief that cinema was yet to be invented (Myth 17) - a statement that can still be considered true when analyzing the development and eventual reinvention of specific filmmaking methods. The essential difference is that, while Bazin believed cinema was trying to catch up to the myth of its total enactment - in order to eventually reach an end result - in this case cinema continues to be “invented” due to its openness for experimentation - one without an end. The Portuguese critic-turned-director Miguel Gomes is behind a body of work that is distinctive in how it shifts between documentary and narrative filmmaking techniques, helping with this slow “invention” of the seventh art through formal experimentation. Strongly, but not exclusively, due to his mixture of techniques, his oeuvre is also firmly linked to realism, keeping such theories relevant, and as contemporary as his own work. -

I watched as everyone lined the streets and threw tomatoes at Khrushchev. No one was happy about him visiting Glen Cove.” Spinello doesn’t know if the former lead- er of the Soviet Union ever visited again, but he has seen cars with diplomatic license plates heading for the compound several times over the years. Back home, his overly proper suburban parents succeed in driving him nuts in record time, as they do everything in their power to sweep the embarrassing incident under the carpet. By chance, Lars runs into a small radical group of neo-Nazis led by the charismatic Michael ‘Fatso’ (Nicolas Bro). Initially, Lars distances himself from their ideology and methods, but fuelled by defiance against the system in general – and his parents in particular – Lars decides to join the group. Fatso immediately spots the potential in the intelligent eloquent Lars, even though his right-hand man, Jimmy (David Dencik), does not agree. Lars rapidly advances through the ranks and is nominated as an A member, despite the fact that this promotion should really have gone to Jimmy’s younger brother, Patrick (Morten Holst). Lars moves out of his parents’ house and into board chairman Ebbe’s remotely situated summer cottage, which Jimmy is in the process of renovating. Despite their initial dislike of each other, the attraction between the two men soon becomes too strong to ignore, and even though they feel torn between ideology and emotions, they begin a secret relationship. -

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -

2018 PORTUGAL FILM 2018 PORTUGAL FILM The work of Portugal Film in the promotion of Portuguese cinema worldwide is entering a new level in this fourth year of existence. Our films are now a constant presence in major international film festivals' competitions, and more and more films - both shorts and features - are sold to TV channels, VOD platforms, and other commercial circuits, giving us a much bigger role as distributors. On our promotional activity, while following the work of the more established filmmakers that are represented in our catalogue we are also looking for young directors who can bring new visions to Portuguese cinema. Working closely with the Lisbon Theatre and Film School we are able to recognize the style of a new generation already showing its work to the world as for the first time in the history of the School a short film made by a team of students has been selected to the Berlinale Shorts competition. All these films, directors, and film teams will have their work seen by programmers, film critics, festival directors, and sales agents from all over the world increasing their visibility and the reach of Portuguese cinema. Our industry events - the Lisbon Screenings held yearly in April/May - are more and more participated and the films/projects presented are also increasing in numbers. In this year’s catalogue, again, we present a small selection of films as we believe this to be the only way to fulfill the commitment of keeping a personal relationship with the directors and their work. The films are diverse in genre, format, and style, and the selection combines directors' first films and developments in more established directors' filmographies.
