Selattyn and Gobowen Parish

The Parish is the largest in North and includes large village of Gobowen and the smaller villages and settlements of Selattyn, Hengoed and Pant Glas. Other areas of note within the parish include the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, The Derwen College, Hill Fort, Selattyn Tower, Brygyntyn Estate, Oswestry Race Course, Pant Glas Conservation Area and sections of Watts Dyke, Oswald’s Trail and The Shropshire Way. The villages of Selattyn and Gobowen both have primary schools and Gobowen is also home to a library and train station as well as a number of shops.

The parish has a population of just over 5000 and is surrounded by the Selattyn Hills on one side and the historic mining village of St Martins on the other side. The Parish on the outskirts of Oswestry 20 miles north of and 15 miles south of Wrexham

The Council

Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council holds the Local Council Award: Foundation Level and was established in 1968 and has 15 councillors who meet monthly on the second Wednesday of each month except August in Gobowen Pavilion. In addition to this the Council has the following committees who meet quarterly;

• Finance and Executive Committee • Amenities and Services Committee • Planning Committee

The Parish Council is responsible for the management of following assets and projects: ▪ Gobowen Pavilion and Playing field ▪ Gobowen Sports court ▪ Hengoed Cemetery ▪ Gobowen Allotments ▪ Streetlights ▪ Bus shelters ▪ The Community meals project ▪ Parish Council Website, Quarterly Newsletter and Social Media (Facebook and Twitter)

Council Staff

The Council’s staff currently comprises of 1 part time Parish Clerk who works for 21 hours a week to be worked flexibly. Approximately 20 volunteers help to run the community meals service.
