CHAPTER ~ Chartered November 3, 1967

May 2009 | Vol. 1, No. 1

President's Message I recently learned a new word while watching Oprah’s show, Ageless Living with Dr. Oz: Secrets of the Blue Zone. Dr. Oz says that while having lifelong friends is key to shedding stress, you also need to experience that personal high or "ikigai”. Ikigai is an Okinawan word meaning “that which makes one’s life worth living.”

If you attended the April meeting, former Governor Ben Cayetano's "talk story" included bits of history as well as some humorous anecdotes. We learned from Cayetano that John A. Burns, second governor of the state of , was a devout Catholic, yet the Right for Abortion bill passed during his era. How did he do it? Sometimes calm is more powerful than noise and by not signing the Bill when it passed his desk, it automatically became law. He stood firm to his values yet he avoided the controversy and clatter that would have occurred had he acted on the bill. Interesting! Did you also know that Governor Cayetano is an expert at ironing clothes? What an irony (no pun intended), as he is married to the president of United Laundry Services, Vicky Cayetano! When Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki hotel manager, Roseann Grippo, thanked the Governor for sharing the evening, she offered to do a book signing at the hotel. What a perfect indication that networking and connections are alive and well in EWI of Honolulu. I hope everyone experienced an EWI “high” during our gathering as the evening certainly held good food, good fun and great connections.

Sandy Narvaez held a putting contest promoting Makaha Resort & Golf Club as well as our upcoming Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club. I witnessed Mary Eichholtz’s perfect putts as she enjoyed not one but two “holes in one.” It’s nice to know that our women are talented as well as bright! Awesome, Mary, way to go! Another EWI "high".

On April 9, 2009, member firm Pacific Business News held its 11th annual Women Who Mean Business awards event at the Hawaii Convention Center. Did you know that five of EWI’s past presidents were instrumental in selecting both the 2009 Businesswoman of the Year and the 2009 Woman Volunteer of the Year? What an awesome event starting with a beautiful pule (prayer) by the children and grandchild of 2009 Gladys Kamakaku’okalani ‘Ainoa Brandt Kupuna Award recipient, Pualani Kanaka’ole Kanahele

Women leaders are vibrant, smart, talented, and many of them are athletes in their own right. What proof that it is possible for outstanding business women to juggle a number of balls in the air and catch them all, in sequence and with perfect coordination and timing. Congratulations to Nohea Siaris’ executive, Carol Ai May, Vice President and Marketing Manager of member firm City Mill, who was named the 2009 top woman-owned company in Hawaii! I walked out of the Hawaii Convention Center again on an EWI “high”.

Connections, Careers, and Community abound in many ways for our member firms IN THIS ISSUE and representatives. You only need to participate on the committee level, mark your calendar and attend a monthly meeting, attend a board meeting, and /or participate President's Message 1 in a philanthropy project and you too will experience an EWI "high". 2009 EWISP Awards 2-3

Don’t forget to invite your executive(s) to attend our upcoming EWISP Awards Board Meeting Highlights 4-5 dinner on May 13, 2009. Nadine Uratsuka and her EWISP committee have worked Membership Meeting 6-7 hard to put together a special event. If you haven’t found any ikigai in your lives, Straw Ballot 8 perhaps you need to feel that EWI “high” on May 13th when one outstanding high school junior is named our 2009 EWISP winner. April 8, 2009 Membership Meeting

Our Membership meeting on April 8th at The Willows Restaurant began with President Valerie Tanaka conducting a special election to fill the vacancy for the Vice President/President-Elect position on our 2008 – 2009 Board of Directors. Lois Asato with the Hawaii Convention Center, and chairman of the nominating committee, nominated Sherilyn Tamayose of member firm First Hawaiian Bank to the position. No other nominations were received from the floor. A vote was taken and Sheri was unanimously approved as the Vice President/President-Elect. Congratulations, Sheri!

Sheri then presented the “Thought of the Day”. She shared a poem about the importance of patience and understanding when interacting with our aging parents. The message was clear that our parents have done so much for us, cared for us when we could not care for ourselves. When we have the good fortune of having parents grow old, we have an obligation to extend to them the same care, love, and support that they gave to us.

We were honored by the attendance of our special guest speaker, former Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano, his wife Vicky Cayetano, and her daughter, Marissa Liu. Other guests in attendance were Susan Doyle (Aloha United Way; guest of Naomi Amuro), James Tamayose (Barnes & Noble Kahala; guest of Sheri Tamayose), Jinnah Nakatani, (Hawaii USA Federal Credit Union; guest of June Takekawa); Lee Conching (Hawaii Convention Center; guest of Lois Asato); Roseann Grippo (Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki; guest of Mary Eichholtz); Sandra Matsushima (Professional & Vocational Licensing Div., DCCA, State of Hawaii; guest of Val Tanaka); Yolanda Tominaga (guest of Val Tanaka); Mary Ann Yeh (Current Affairs; guest of Sandy Narvaez); Carleton Ching, (Castle & Cooke, Inc.; guest of Adele Tsukamoto); Robert Wo, Jr., (C.S. Wo and Sons, Ltd.; guest of Susan Tanigawa); Kamei Lac, KTM Services, Inc.; guest of Ka Noi Lam); memoir [mem-wahr] Bob Charlet (Pacific Business News; guest of Doreen Tavarez); Carissa Clark; (Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki; Guest of Mary Eichholtz); J. Noun Kuboyama, (Flower Company; guest of Kathleen Yoshinaga); and Jan a biography or historical account Shimomura (Island Insurance; guest of Lisa Yamada). based on personal knowledge Governor Cayetano shared with us a glimpse of his book, “Ben: A Memoir, from Street Kid to Governor”. He talked about what it was like growing up in – which was a different place back then. Governor Cayetano acknowledged his troubles during high school and with the law. He became a father at 19 and in his 20’s decided to go to college. His collegiate journey began in junior college and then he went on to UCLA and then Loyola Law School.

According to Governor Cayetano, he had no intention of going into public office. He graduated from college at the height of the civil rights movement, with the war in Viet Nam raging and the Watts riots still fresh in everyone’s memory. His generation was skeptical of the government and he had no ambition to enter into that line of work. As fate would have it, Governor John Burns appointed him to serve on a commission and the rest, as they say, is history.

He ran for his first elected position as a Representative for the Pearl City district. He honed his political skills from this experience and did not use race as part of his platform. He was told that he wouldn’t win the predominantly Japanese district but he knew that everyone wants the same things – good schools, safe neighborhoods, opportunity. Mr. Cayetano was Lieutenant Governor in 1986 and in 1994 he became the first Filipino-American Governor of the State of Hawaii.

Following Governor Cayetano’s lively presentation, there was a short Q&A session. He was very gracious in answering questions from the audience and when asked which actor he’d like to portray him in a movie about his life, he chuckled and replied, “That’s not going to happen!”

Mrs. Cayetano shared a humorous story about a trip that they made to Japan while her husband was in office. She said that they were staying at a hotel in Tokyo and she had called for an iron and ironing board to be sent to their room. Imagine the shock and dismay of the hotel’s staff when they realized that the governor intended to iron his own clothes!

6 EWI-Honolulu.org May 2009 | Vol. 1, No. 1

Thanks to Governor Ben Cayetano and Mrs. Cayetano for sharing their time and stories. After the meeting, both stayed to talk to our group, sign autographs, and take pictures. Governor Ben and Mrs. Cayetano were delightful guests. And for Governor Cayetano – another local boy done good – we are so proud!

------The first printing of Governor Cayetano’s book is sold-out. A second printing will be coming out in late-April.

HMSA’s Revolutionary Health Care Service Online care is there when you need it.

It’s 3 in the morning and your back hurts every time you move. You can’t sleep and you’re worried. Is this serious? Should I go to the emergency room? Can it wait until morning? You’re anxious and you want answers now.

The answer? Online health care.

In January, HMSA introduced an innovation in health care – HMSA’s Online Care. The system connects consumers with HMSA participating physicians online or by phone. HMSA is the first health plan in the nation to offer online health services through a landmark agreement with Microsoft and American Well Inc., a company that provides health care communication solutions.

With HMSA’s Online Care, consumers in Hawaii can speak with a local primary care physician or specialist by Web-based videoconferencing, secure chat, or telephone.

HMSA’s Online Care is available around the clock without an appointment from the privacy and convenience of your home. Sessions are immediate, secure, private and affordable. This service is available to all residents of Hawaii, and not just for HMSA members, and will improve access to care statewide, especially in rural areas.

Online sessions are not meant to replace in-person doctor visits; they simply provide another health care choice for talking to a doctor about a non-urgent condition or getting advice or answers.

HMSA is dedicated to providing health care choices for its members. That’s why HMSA is pleased to be the first health plan to offer this additional choice for your health care. HMSA’s Online Care is especially valuable to those who require an immediate answer to a pressing concern that doesn’t necessarily require an ER visit, those who are too busy to leave home or work to see a doctor, those who are worried about an issue and want peace of mind, and those who are uninsured or underinsured.

Sirius-ly Speaking

Q: My dog digs holes in my yard. My yard is not the prettiest but it’s not in bad shape. I’d like to keep it that way if possible. How can I stop him?

A: Whether your yard is immaculate or not, many people do not want their dogs digging up their yard for a variety of reasons. The most obvious one is that digging makes a physical as well as visual mess. The dog ends up filthy and someone may step in a hole and twist their ankle.

Many times digging is just a symptom not the “disease.” Many dogs that dig are not exercised enough. Are you taking your dog out at least 2 times a day for nice brisk walks? If the answer is “no,” start scheduling regular walks about 30 minutes twice a day. If your answer is “yes we do walk our dog regularly and he still digs,” are you mentally exercising him? Do you challenge your dog’s mind on a daily basis? This can take the form of obedience training, trick training, agility work, etc. Although it might seem like a great life to lie around all day and be fed, most dogs want to be challenged physically and mentally.
