Secretary’s Report for 2020 AGM

Well I don't think anyone of us expected to be writing this type of report. Who would've known, this time last year the completely new set of major challenges and obstacles ahead of us as families and as a community club. My initial thoughts are how lucky we all are to be involved in this wonderful community and for many of us and our children, the club and the community have been our core survival net since early March 2020.

I would like to thank the entire committee for all their hard work and efforts throughout the year. As always a major amount of work has been put in on the forefront and also behind the scenes. Our GAA Lotto is still going extremely well every Tuesday night (LIVE ON FACEBOOK). The Lotto committee gives their time to organise this very important fundraiser for our club.

To go back to the start on 6th December 2019, we had a first committee meeting with our newly elected committee members, to organise the events throughout the year for 2020. First up was the annual bag-packing in our local Reilly's SuperValu, it has been successful as always as you will see the funds within the treasurer's report. I would like to thank all the teams for their voluntary time in helping out with the bag packing and all parents and mentors that supervised and helped out. To our little carol singers who sang on Christmas Eve alongside Dave Sharkey, a big thank you and also to Domino's for supplying pizzas for the little ones. Huge thanks to Laura & Fergus for ensuring we always have our slots for the run up to Christmas.

Up next was the Stephen's Day match, another massive success for Sallins GAA. Fair play to Murt taking on his team and myself with the opposition team. Thanks to everyone who showed up on the morning, the players, the fans, the support and everyone who helped along the way especially the tea and the magic tea. This is a great fundraiser for Sallins Tidy Towns and thanks to Tidy Towns for all of the spot prizes. Not to forget Flanagan's Mill, Barry, Ola and all their staff for the hot stew they provided after the match.

As always in the start of every year, the first two to three months is a busy time for the club as teams are starting to come back and prepare for the year ahead as you will see in the "Team Reports" below.

Early March arrived and as the club was about to move into high gear for the year ahead the pandemic hit every one of us across the country. A month passed by, a text message came in to myself that there was going to be a Saturday Night Live to give everyone a boost which in turn turned out to be a success. It’s great to see two clubs (Sallins Celtic F.C.) & Sallins GAA, Sallins Scouts (23rd ) and Sallins Dramatic Society, I would like to thank each and every one of you for all your hard work and efforts in organising this and putting this event in motion. It really is great to see the community pull together and create these wonderful events in a time of uncertainty.

Speaking on the topic of Covid-19, when lockdown was introduced, I was lucky enough to be still working. With phone calls being made back and forth to everyone involved in our community to organise all of our village locals, local businesses a group was established to ensure the help of the vulnerable. I would like to thank Anne Bagnall & Ger Eaton for setting up the WhatsApp group now known as Sallins Volunteers. We had over 30 volunteers within the group. Anne and Ger also left memos in all our local businesses to volunteer for deliveries of goods and services to anyone who may have required it.

Finally, the day arrived in late June where we could all return to the club. With emails coming from Croke Park, we had to set up a group and appoint Covid- 19 Supervisors for every team. Every player had to undergo the online health questionnaire before every training session and match days. I would like to thank all our Covid-19 Supervisors, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our local Lidl for donating hand sanitizers, masks, disinfectants and gloves.

With all games being put off and put on throughout the pandemic, we finally got the championship up and going which you will see in the "Teams Reports". The senior footballers got their quarter final but unfortunately lost to Allenwood. The junior B footballers, didn't make it out of their group. The hurlers (Wolfe Tones) are still in the B championship semi-final which will continue in January or early February. Minor footballers are in the B 3 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

championship semi-final which will be kicked off around the same time as the hurlers. This is the first time Sallins has a minor hurling team. With a lot of push backs with games, the lads have made the Championship B final which will also be played as the same above.

Well done to all the players that made it on to the various Kildare development squads and we hope they enjoyed the experience, they were: Cian Grimes and Luke Cillian – Kildare Minors, Harry Young, Jack Couch, Stephen Moran, Kildare Minor Hurling, Luke Kelly, Aaron Carney, Adam Kane, Daniel Caulfield, James Dalton – Kildare Minors, Hayley McCormack, - Kildare Minor, Claire Nugent – Kildare Senior

Under 20 football, a huge thank you to all our supporters during the year and for all your generosity to keep the club going from strength to strength. I've decided although its breaking me inside, unfortunately I've decided to stand down from the role of Sallins GAA Secretary. I have to thank each and every one of you who has supported and guided me in the last number of years.

I won't mention names in fear of leaving somebody out and I also will not flower things up totally, there have been some tough times but as I said on many occasions we are all volunteers and we are bound to rules and regulations so only at times there only so far we can push things, we have to work together to make changes and improve and I think the landing of the pandemic showed us all how much our village pulls together to make these things work.

Overall I enjoyed working for my club in this capacity, I have learned to nod and smile and let some things go over my head. As I discovered, some people like a good aul' rant whereby it might come across as personal, Sallins GAA has thought me the professionalism of letting it go over my head. A job is always easy when you're surrounded by great workers and we are very fortunate to have so many passionate people involved in our club.

I would also like to say a huge thanks to our Treasurer (Brian Kenny) for his outstanding hard work, efforts and workmanship in keeping the finances of the club in top order.

Another massive thanks to the main man of our club the Chairman Eddie Humphreys in ensuring everything is ran as smooth as possible, Eddie's & Brian's passion and vision for the club is unique in its own way and I think it'd be safe to say that without these two men our club would not be what it is today. I will really miss all you guys but the crediting thing about this situation is I have gained some amazing friends for life. I am not running away, I will continue to work on the committee, I just feel the role of secretary needs innovative ideas and energy and I need to recharge!

Greg Brennan - Runai

Facilities / Field Committee

Chaired by Ronan Brazil. Ronan has ensured once again that the conveyor belt training and games run smoothly throughout the year. I would like to thank Ronan and his field committee for keeping the pitches to a high standard all year. We updated our flood lights to LED's, the scoreboard was also updated to LED's, a net was placed on top of the ball wall where someone got the cherry picker stuck that Sunday morning, no one knows who was operating it. I know the secret but I will not say (I think it was a DUB). Field Committee: Shay Collins, Anthony Herbert, Fergal Nugent, Colm O'Doherty, Darren Solan, Eric Flynn, John Boland, Len O', Paul Kelly, Sean Gilligan and Paudric Brennan.

Lotto Committee

This lotto committee now meets every Tuesday night to hold the weekly draw down at the club Siopa, The committee comprises of Fran Walsh, Alicia Kirwan, Eve Brennan, Tom Cross, Jackie Collins, Murt Walsh, Kevin Connolly, Colm O'Doherty, Fergal Nugent, Francie Connolly, Patsy Keane and Sean Gilligan. I would like to thank our regular ticket seller who are all of the above and to all our online customers and also to Murphy's Pharmacy / Nolan's Butcher's / Marron's Petrol Station and the three Publicans pre-lockdown.

I would like to thank Barry Kelly for his top work in this field as this role can be quite challenging, difficult, and sometimes tedious but was absolutely nothing for Barry. Thanks Barry!

Registrar

The registrar is very important because it needs to ensure that all players are registered for the season ahead before the 31st of March. It is a tough start to the season and I would like to thank this man, Colm O’Doherty for his outstanding hard work ethic and efforts as this can be quite a tedious job ensuring that this is all done before the set date so a massive thank you there to Colm.

Sponsors Thanks to our main sponsor this year Barry and Ola from Flanagan's Mill/Lock13 for sponsoring the senior team .The senior management and team would like to thank Barry and the staff of the Lock13 for their sponsorship this year.

Delegates: Tom Cross is our club delegate are our link with the various County Boards. Many thanks to Tom.

ACTIVITY REPORTS - Football

The Senior Team.

2020 was a difficult year for the lad's as they prepared really well for Div2 by committing to a Gym program in late November, which we looked like reaping the rewards with good early performances against BME and Clogherinkoe in the Cup only losing out to Kevin's. Then lockdown would see us not playing our next competitive game for almost 5 months,

6 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

In these unprecedented times the player's kept themselves in good shape doing their own running programs until we were allowed back to Collective training. League started mid-July we were very competitive against and Ballyteague and brought that form into first championship game against Nurney that we comfortably controlled, and we were really buzzing for.

TMH the following week till the dreaded lockdown came back and stopped us playing again. When eventually TMH game came around we got a slow start and found ourselves trailing by 10pts after 12 mins, but lad's showed huge heart to get right back in game only to lose by 1. The Allenwood game collectively wasn't to the level this group expect from ourselves so we will take the learnings from it and from the strange year and come back stronger.

Management would like to thank the player's for the huge effort they made to represent the Senior team and the Club.

Minor Football

The Minor Team competed in Division 2 of the league and the B championship. The lads have done well in both competitions qualifying for the semi-finals in both and have won all their games in the championship to date unfortunately this has now been put on hold until early next year. We have some fantastic talent in this team and hopefully they will all make the next step to represent Sallins on the senior stage with some already doing so.

A big thanks to our management team of Conor,Eamonn,Jack, Paddy and Evan for supporting the lads through a difficult season.

JUVENILE GAMES - Football

U7 Football

2020 started great, we were able to start back training earlier than usual using the school all-weather pitch. We hoped the early January start would benefit the U7 team when the league commenced in March, which would have been their first official league matches. However 2020 had other places and Covid arrived…. 7 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

It was great to be able to resume training in early June. Although we did lose a few players, it was fantastic to see 20 plus girls and boys at training every week. The commitment from each of these players and their parents is fantastic. During the summer we were lucky to be able to play a few matches and the children gave 100% each time and displayed great skill and determination. It was a joy to see the smiles on their faces as we got back to some normality. Unfortunately when Kildare entered lockdown in August we had to halt matches. Since then we have continued training with non-contact sessions and not once have the children complained. They continue to train each week with a smile on their faces, full of energy and enthusiasm. The mentors have seen a huge improvement in every child week in week out and it is great to see them growing in confidence. This is in part due to the additional parents coming on board to help with training sessions. Having more mentors means we have more time to spend on teaching each child the skills they need.

We would also like to say a big thank you to Connie Finnerty who each week ensures that training can go ahead by acting as our covid officer. W ithout her we would have no training. Also a huge thank you to Owen Marron from Marrons Gala, Sallins, who sponsored us with a new set of jerseys at the start of the year.

Finally a thank you to each parent for bringing the children to training each week and a huge welcome to the new girls and boys that started this year. Here’s to an exciting 2021-hopefully full of matches!

U7 mentors: Sharon, Joanne, Fergal, James, Ronan.

The Under 9s football report – David Gahan, November 2020

Like all age groups in the club this year, the Under 9s have continued as best they can considering the circumstances. We finished 2019 with 23 boys and I’m glad to report that while we have lost one or two during the year we have gained a few new lads. Today we have 26 boys born in 2011 spread over 6 schools.

Training

8 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

Thankfully we started 2020 with training on January 12th on the new school Astro pitch – thanks to Martin for organising a time slot for us and we did an hour training each Sunday (mixing it with hurling so the dual players got 30mins of each while the football only lads got the full 60mins). This all came to an end with the first lock down in mid-March. With everything locked down, we made a video of the lads demonstrating their skills and we returned to training in July using the new community lands for the first time, after the 2nd lock down we went back training Friday nights on the senior pitch. With the new restrictions we organised ourselves into 3 groups each with 2 coaches based on the 3 classes in school. Training continues Friday nights and we intend to take a break for December and early January.

Games

We entered 2 teams into the Go Game League (just one league this year). We were due to have 7 games between July and October but with the 2nd lockdown we completed just 4 matches. St Edwards at home, away to St Kevin’s, home to Cappagh and finishing away to St Edwards in . We had 22/23 lads out for each game and we were competitive in them all and much stronger in some of them. These matches were very enjoyable with great displays of skill, teamwork and with some fine scores. Unfortunately, our annual summer blitz didn’t get going this year either.

Thank-you

In addition to thanking all the parents who tirelessly ensure that their sons get to all our training sessions and matches and for their video shooting skills, a special mention must go to our great group of coaches who look after this energetic and fun loving group. Between running training every Friday and keeping them on their toes to motivating and coaching them during our games. Thanks Ronan Flanagan, Stephanie Kinahan, Tom Cashman, Donal Cunningham and Martin Smith and a special mention and thanks to Donal for keeping us safe as our covid supervisor. We are already looking forward to more games in 2021.

U8 Boys Football.

In the Autumn League we played 3 Games as the League was very restricted by Covid 19.

Boys Mentors : Marion McCormack, Ros Tamning and Philip Walsh.

Some of the U8’s Boys played in a few Go Games with the U9’s where practical.

Great progress made on the basic skills and we will start into some more challenging drills next Spring. The target is to be well prepared for start of U9 GO GAMES and Spring League, 2021.

Thanks to all the Parents for bringing their Children to Training each week and travelling to all the matches. Last, but not least, thanks to the Mentors for making themselves available and putting in the time and effort to make it all possible.

U12 report

The year started with 4 weeks indoor training in the school hall in January. In February we moved onto the pitch and put in some really good training sessions in preparation for our spring league North Board campaign for which we had entered two teams at Division 2 and Division 4. Unfortunately co-vid arrived in early March just days before our first round of matches.

We kept the lads going online with a number of ideas including motivational skills videos from Dublin's Ciaran Kilkenny. There was a very good uptake and participation across all 29 players. Throughout the summer months we kept the lads going with skills challenges for example for the Roar for Ruairi fundraiser. We started online training sessions with our Games Promotional Officer Mark. We continued with online sessions ourselves live on zoom from Tom Cronins back garden !

We were eventually able to get back training in July just in time to prepare for our Seanie Barber Cup campaign. We entered two teams, one in Division 2 and one in Division 5. Bizarrely we had to stand our ground with the County

10 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

Board who wanted to put us in Div 1 (for the whole county) even though we had only been graded as Div 2 for the North Board in the spring.

When our matches thankfully eventually began we acquitted ourselves very well. Our Div 5 team won a very close semi-final against Confey to advance to a shield final against Ballyteague. In a cracking final we won with a couple of scores to spare to collect our first ever trophy. Our Div 2 team also made it to a shield semi-final v which will hopefully be played when matches resume in the New Year. There were some memorable performances for this team most notably against Raheens where they rallied from 13 points behind mid-way through the second half to win with a few points to spare. The players are eager to get the semi-final played as soon as possible.

Rob Coffey, Colm Keane and Gavin Cooke came on board this year to form a strong management team with Tom Cronin and Brendan Owens.

U13 report

The Under 13 football year started with a lot of anticipation as the boys moved from 11 aside games on the juvenile pitch up to 15 aside on the full size senior pitch. The action got going early in February with matches against Kill, Nurney and helping the lads adjust to the new playing dimensions. With March came the lockdown and a cessation of activities. Not letting the heads drop, there was no end of videos of training drills, wellbeing tips and general nuggets of wisdom and motivation shared out by John to the boys to keep everyone going.

Keep going they did and at the end of June the 28 strong panel of players all arrived back eager to get going again. Throughout the summer the boys trained hard on Tuesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Their commitment and work ethic is a credit to each of them and no doubt will stand to them in years to come. October finally provided an opportunity for one long awaited match against Raheens, a classy win providing deserved payback for the hard work through the year.

Big thanks to John Boland, Derek Walsh and Mick Brosnan for all of the time and effort put into coaching and training. Thanks also to Stephen, Martin, Padraig, Len, Hugh, Trevor and Ronan for the help and assistance. 11 | Page

And thank you to all the parents who continue to encourage and support. We look forward to getting together again for U14 football in 2021. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

U14 Football report

Coaches; Luke Kiernan, Stephen Kearney, Paul Hodson, Jacko McCormack, Sean Power.

2020 was due to be a big year for this U14 team as it was also Feile year. With the introduction of the Covid 19 restrictions in March, Feile was unfortunately cancelled. Once the initial restrictions were reduced during the summer, the U14 league kicked off. We were placed in a very strong Div 3 group with 7 matches which were ran every Sunday. Unfortunately we did not have much success, as matches were played over the summer months of July/August we were always missing players, I'd like to thank the U13 team for providing some of their players to help with ensuring we have sufficient numbers for match day.

A criticism I have of the county board is that over the last 2 years is that we have applied to be in Div 4. For the last 2 years we have been graded 1 or 2 divisions higher (we were a Div 2 team for the 13 spring league). Teams that bet us in the 2013 league were graded lower than us for 2020. We will endeavor to ensure that this team is graded correctly for the 2021 season.

On a positive note, we have 19 boys registered who are born in 2006, so we have a healthy sized panel. We are seeing steady improvements in their skillsets. In the past 18 months we have added 2 experienced coaches to our group; Paul Hodson and recently Jacko McCormack. They are bringing new ideas and coaching drills which ensure that our training sessions are very productive. We have continued to train the past few weeks on Thursdays and Sundays. If any parents are reading this and have a son born in 2006 who would like to play Gaelic football, please reach out to one of the coaches listed above.

U15 report as follows:

12 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

U15 Boys Football played just two competitive matches in the spring league in Division 2 in line for either cup or shield competition just before lockdown. The competition never completed as it was superseded by U16 football competitions with most of the U15 squad getting the opportunity to play up.

The U15s were again due to play in Division 2 in the Autumn league but unfortunately lockdown struck again. The lads are continuing non-contact skills based training which is a proving to be a great opportunity for them to develop and strengthen their non-dominant side while enjoying the challenge. All are looking forward to 2021 for many reasons including football matches. Mentors: Patrick O’Sullivan, John McCarthy and Eamonn Kehoe.

Under 16 Football team report

Boys U16 Football competed in Division 3 in 2020. A young team with many U15s playing up to make up the panel. The league campaign was just about to start when the first lockdown happened and so we went straight to Championship when games resumed in July. Unfortunately the timing didn't suit the panel with a number of players either injured or away for the first three games, all resulting in very narrow losses to Fr. Prendergast Gaels, Oliver Plunketts and . However once the full panel was available a confidence boosting win against then led to victories over the previously unbeaten Miltown and Kilcullen again in shield semi final. This led to a shield final against Suncroft and with the lessons learned from the previous meeting resulted in a 6 point victory on the day Sallins 2-9 Suncroft 0-9. A great way to finish the year with some silverware for the team. Great improvements were made during the competition especially once the lads got used to the physical demands of U16 football.

Mentors: Keith Grimes, Barry Kelly and Graeme Locke

LADIES FOOTBALL

Senior Ladies

Senior ladies started the year early February unfortunately we never got to complete in the league after showing good progress in our challenge matches. 13 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

Once restrictions were lifted we restarted training in preparation for the Championship. We were very competitive in our group claiming a semifinal spot against TwoMile House but unfortunately it was not our night as we were narrowly beaten. A lot of positives can be taken out of this year and all are looking forward to next year where hopefully the potential of this group of ladies will allow them to go one step further

U9/U10 ladies football

Quick report for the Girls U9/10 Football (combined for 1 squad).

We had just begun training for the year when the first lockdown came about, since we've been able to return we've consistently had 15-20 girls training each week, great enthusiasm and skills improving all the time. We didn't have any 'official' fixtures. But managed to squeeze a few friendly games in before the latest lockdown Vs Raheens and Kill, which the girls really enjoyed and were able to put all of their training into practice. A great group to deal with, looking forward to 2021 and hopefully more matches! Coaches: Darby, Janice & Brian and we're always grateful for the valuable help each week from Jennie, Nicole and Saoirse.

U11 ladies

Mentors: Maggie O’Connell, Eddie Humphries, Claire Brennan, Annie Killian

Players: 22

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 the spring league in which we were due to play as the U12 second team was cancelled. Thankfully, once lockdown ceased during the summer, we managed to return to training which we were all grateful for. It was great to see all the players return after such a long break away.

Come the autumn we were able to support the Sallins U12 team in the U12 league as well as fitting in a couple of U11 challenge matches. 14 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

Most importantly, it is encouraging for us that we have such a strong and committed panel of girls which is evident through the numbers attending training and their enthusiasm for matches. Roll on 2021

U13 Girls football 2019.

2020 started off very good with 18 girls returning to play. Training resumed in February and the girls were coming on great improving and preparing for Féile. Unfortunately due to Covid Féile was cancelled and lockdown ensued. In July we resumed training and in September we played In division 3, U13s.

A total of five games were played with the girls winning four and losing one by one point. This was a great boost and achievement for the team. Since July training has continued one night a week with an increased number of players. With their everyday lives changing due to covid we hope to continue with training for as long as possible to help maintain their fitness and mental wellbeing.

Thanks to George Francis, Anita O’Reilly and Dave Cummins for their continued support and time with mentoring the U13s team.

U14 ladies

Mentors : Eric O'Flynn, Angela Kenny, Tom Cashman, Bart Reumkens Chloe O'Flynn (Gaisce)

We have a panel of 20 players including a new member joining during the year. We regularly get an average of 16 plus players training which we will keep going as late in the year as possible. We started training in January and had several challenge matches and blitzes preparing very well for Feile. However Feile was cancelled due to Covid lockdown. 15 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

We finally played competitive football in the autumn playing as the second u15 team. We won our championship coming out on top due to a better head to head record v as a result of 2 fantastic performances against them. This is silverware again having won silverware in 2019 so was a fantastic finish to a frustrating year. We are delighted with the girls' progress on the pitch as individuals and as a team. It was particularly satisfying to see several of the previously "weaker" girls bringing their game to a higher level through hard work and dedication. A special thanks to our two highly committed covid supervisors Lisa Healy and Hilary Dempsey who have kept us all in line and facilitated us safely returning to play.

Sallins Girls 2005 team annual report 2020.

We competed the start as the under 16 2nd team, we started training back in January and our first game was away Sarsfield’s in February. Unfortunately the rest in the history books now……………..

We kicked off the Autumn league in Div. 3 as under 15s , we competed very strong at this level and our girls showed real grid, determination and also had to dig deep into their reserves in some of our games. We have great hopes and belief in our team for 2021. Our training will continue until the first week in December and we will take a break until mid-January. All going well our first game will be mid-February.

Our mentors continue to keep themselves up to date in all areas of coaching. We represented Sallins LGFA in the Gaelic for Girls Programme. This is a series of events run by Croke Park LGFA and Sallins sent 10 mentors to represent the club. We had the highest number of mentors of all the clubs at the first session. Unfortunately the programme was postponed but with hope to take up again in 2021.

Thank you to Mary O Brian, Anna Byrne and Rachel Neilan whose help we could not have done without this year,

Regards

U16 Ladies Football

The year began very brightly with the news that Anna Carpenter and Eabha Owens had been selected for the Kildare U16s county panel. We trained well throughout February and played our first league game away to Milltown in early March. Co-vid unfortunately brought an end to our training and matches. The girls showed great team spirit by participating fully in online training and skills and fitness challenges that we set for them. We continued training right up to recently and despite the fact that they only got to play one match all year, morale was very good indeed. Minor Ladies Football

Minor ladies

The minor team trained together from mid-summer onwards. The championship was delayed because of co-vid and also because of the senior championship being delayed. When the senior championship finished we got the 11 players in training with the rest of the panel. We were graded in Division 3 and were really looking forward to the challenge when further co-vid restrictions meant the championship was cancelled. Training is currently still ongoing and spirits are high for next year. Joe Griffith has come in as manager and has instilled huge self belief in these girls. Sarah Mc Cormick, Gary Higgins and Brendan Owens make up Joe's management team.

HURLING REPORTS

AHL Senior

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

Senior Hurling 2020

After struggling to field a hurling team on a no. of occasions in the last few years, the start of 2020 saw us faced with the loss of 10 players from last year due to retirements and players unavailable due to other commitments. After checking with nearly 30 possible players, only 8 where able to fully commit to playing & a few more would be available some of the time but there was not enough to field a team.

As a result, we spoke to Kill who were in similar position and after consultation with the 2 clubs committees, we agreed to enter a combined team called Wolfe Tones. Matt Faughnan from Naas was appointed as trainer. We had our first training session in mid-March but there was no further activity until the lifting of COVID restriction in June. When training did get started, we had great turnouts with an average of over 20 players per session & the players began to blend together as a team.

Unfortunately, there was no junior hurling league but by the time of our first championship match on 10th Sept, we had completed over 25 training sessions & 5 challenge matches. In the first round we lost narrowly to holders and favourites Naas but followed that with a big win over Clane and then in the crucial final group game against Eire Og we put in a great team performance to win out by 7 points & qualify for a Semi Final against Sarsfields. The team was very well prepared to peak for the semi-final in early October but we must wait until the new year to play it. As soon s restrictions allow, we plan to get back to training once a week in preparation for the semi- final.

Team mentors: Matt Faughnan (Trainer) & selectors Martin Egan (Sallins) and Sean Cullen (Kill), Other mentors Pat Kinsella & Eric Hardiman. Great credit is due to Matt for huge effort in planning excellent high intensity training sessions that were also enjoyable in difficult circumstances created by the ever changing Covid19 situation.

U7 boys started off our hurling training this year with great spirit and energy. They have showed great potential, formed great bonds with each other and l hope have had a lot of fun at training this year. Despite it being cut short they have progressed really well and their skills have immensely improved. The bean bags they use to catch and hold on their hurl is a particular favourite of theirs and it is so great to see them having such fun. I think this is why towards the end of the year we have seen the numbers grow and grow.

Thankfully, to accommodate this we have a super pool of helpers, Jacqui and Ronan O’Brien, Martin Woulfe, Ken Nunn , Dan O’ Connell, Brian Whelan and Niamh Fitzsimons, our covid supervisor. We are so fortunate to have a strong enthusiastic group of fine young men coming up the ranks to represent Sallins.

We look forward to getting stuck back into training in the New Year and to watch the boys continue to improve and have so much fun with their friends at training. Sallins Abu. Dawn Whelan

Report for U8/U9 Hurling

Coaches: Gareth O'Brien, Mairead Smith, Geoff Fulham, Ciaran Smith, David Gahan, Carol Cashman

U8 and U9 hurling are a combined group of 26 players competing in under 9 matches. The progress made by this group in the last year has been fantastic with agility, hand-eye coordination and ability sky rocketing. All mentors of this group are extremely proud of how all the kids are progressing.

We managed to play a small number of matches between lockdowns this year and these were very enjoyable for all involved. We field 2 teams allowing all players the maximum amount of play time.

Training sessions during lockdown have focused on repetition of hurling skill using a variety of methods to keep it fun for the players. We have used Poc 19 | Page

Fada, Assault Courses, the Ball Wall and many other engaging routines to make sure all of the Hurling Skills advance.

All the coaches of this group would like to thank the players for making our work so rewarding.

U11 report

Our U11 hurlers had a great year competing against all of the stronger teams and winning all of our matches up to the lockdown. We have a panel of 16 players and topped up with some u10s to field 2 teams all year. We have continued training throughout lockdown with emphasis on their skills and good technique. The future is bright for this group of players. Coaches Cathal Hannigan & Gavin Cooke.

Our u12 hurlers have a panel of 12 topped up with u11 hurlers. They are a massively competitive group with big hearts and no lack of skill to back it up. They have had very competitive matches all year in Div 1. The lads are getting great use out of the Ball Wall with the coaching emphasis on good technique, striking and catching. Coaches John Angaland, Philip Niland, Tom Cronin, Cathal Hannigan & Gavin Cooke. Many thanks to Anna Byrne who is our covid officer.

U13 hurling

No of Players: 19

The U13 hurlers did not have any Spring League competition scheduled and events overtook activities in any event. When initial lockdown lifted full training resumed with excellent attendance from all the players. An Autumn League for U13s was announced and ahead of this a number of the U13 players played up for the U14 team in the U14 league. The U14s qualified for the U14 Div 3 Shield Final in at the end of September and again a number of U13 players lined out for the U14 team on the day and each and every one 20 | Page

can be proud of their performance. Despite a strong first half, the lads unfortunately lost out in the end to Naas.

The resumption of lockdown resulted in the proposed U13 Autumn League being cancelled but training has continued throughout and credit to every single player for his continued commitment to Sallins hurling. Basic skills continue to improve and we all can’t wait to get back to competitive fixtures.

The mentors are delighted with the continued progression seen from the group in the past year and are looking forward to continued development in the next campaign with participation in the U14 Spring and Autumn leagues.

Under 14 Hurling

We started the year with the expectation that as well as playing in the county Feile hurling competition we would also participate in the national Feile hurling finals which were due to be played in Kildare on the first weekend in June. Sallins were due to host a club from Sligo for the weekend of the finals and a number of our families had volunteered to host players. We are very appreciative of their support.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic all Feile competitions for 2020 were cancelled. We then commenced our playing season in July and had three group matches against Eire Og, and St Laurence’s. We qualified for the Shield final against Naas 2 which was played in Hawkfield at the end of September. Despite going into an early lead in the final a couple of quick goals from Naas at the end of the first half gave them a halftime advantage that we were unable to claw back in the second half. Congratulations to Naas 2 on winning the Shield competition.

Under normal circumstances this team would also have competed in the U14 ½ and U15 hurling competitions but unfortunately these competitions were not played this year.

Under 16 Hurling

With a small panel at U16 level (five 16 year olds and seven 15 year olds) Sallins combined with Clane to enter an U16 team under the name Wolfe Tones. We entered the team in Division 2 of the U16 league. We had a very competitive league campaign with matches against Broadford, Kilcock, , Cappagh and Naas. It was a very competitive league with very little difference between all teams involved. We qualified for the Shield Final against Cappagh which was played in Hawkfield in September. This proved to be our best performance of the campaign and after a tight first half we pulled away in the second half for a comfortable victory. Well done to the 12 Sallins players involved.

Mentors: Graeme Locke, Luke Kiernan

Minor Hurling

The Minor hurlers have demonstrated great progress during 2020. Not withstanding the restrictions imposed with Covid 19, we managed to play Kilmacud Crokes;, Commercials Rathcoole; St Peters Dunboyne; St Michaels (Clane+Kilcock) & Coill Dubh.

We had a hard fought win over St Columbas (Leixlip+ Confey) in the championship semi final just before October lockdown. The final v Celbridge has been postponed until February 2021 (hopefully). The lads involved are very dedicated and have made huge progress in developing their game with the use of our new ballwall. This is a great addition to development of players in the club.

CAMOGIE REPORTS

Under 6 camoogie

Team Report by Anne Collins - U6 Camogie

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

The covid lockdown impacted the U6 camogie from starting back training in spring of 2020. Training resumed in September and will continue until December 2020 when we will take a winter break. Our training time is Monday evening at 5.15 but we switched training to a Saturday temporarily from halloween onwards to allow for daylight and weather conditions. There are 9 members of the U6 camogie squad. And we welcomed the return of Orlagh as mentor. Every player was delighted to continue training through these difficult times. We played no matches in 2020 due to covid restrictions

U8/10 CAMOGIE

2020 started out great with the girls training in the schools new astro. This is such a great benefit for winter training! We thought this early January start would benefit us for when the gogames started but that was not to be.... Covid happened.

However once we were able to resume training in late June the attendance was fantastic with upwards of 30 girls at training sessions!!

The commitment and determination of this bunch of young girls and their parents is out of this world.

To see them turn up week after week during a pandemic with smiles on their faces was a joy. They were finally getting back to some sort of normality. Even when August came and Kildare went into local lockdown they continued with non contact sessions and never complained.

We got to play some competitve games too which allowed the girls to show they have all grown in confidence which is amazing to see as mentors.

The weeks we did get to play gogames matches we had 2 teams play, some weeks 3!! Huge thanks to family & parents for supporting the girls to get to matches as well as training.

The parents really stepped up this year with new mentors coming on board and parents helping out when needed. Thank you all. 23 | Page

The ball wall is also a huge benefit to the girls and they have loved developing their skills each week at the wall.

We would also like to thank the TY students who came to help a few times.

And to all the new girls that started this year, a huge welcome!

Heres to an exciting year in 2021.

In January Sharon, John and I will move up to the u10s with all the 2012 girls and Ashley, Karen, James and Yvonne will stay with the u8s.

Mentors: Sharon, Ashley, Karen, James, John, Yvonne and Lisa

U13 Camogie

Our 2020 season hasn't been one of our finest ever. Our Spring league was cancelled because we went into lockdown. Failed was cancelled at the beginning of June and we were all set to host a team from Kerry for that wonderful weekend of Sport.

The girls continued to train during the summer months in preparation for the Autumn league but alas, that too, fell foul of Covid.

The girls continue to train on a Sunday morning and have shown great commitment. We look forward to a better, more productive year in 2021

U15 Camogie

Sallins Gaa are now fielding Camogie teams at 6 age groups - girls from 4 to 15 are lining out with us

U15 Camogie This should have been another great year for this age group. In spring, we competed in an u16 county competition, playing great matches & recording a few wins (against teams a year older than us). 24 | Page

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Na Saileáin Sallins G.A.A. Club

In autumn, we got to a shield final v Broadford, but level 5 restrictions & the weather took its toll.

Some of the team should also have been involved in our Feile team (u14), & we had preparations underway to host a team on our pitches for a great weekend of craic & sport in June 2020.

This is a great team of girls - we continue to train through lockdown, with the intention of competing well in spring 2021.

Mentors at this age groups: Karen Mcdonnell, Siobhan o Gorman & Siobhan Cronin
