Canon Peter Farley-Moore Canon Missioner Designate.

Peter served his title in Chapeltown, Sheffield, and is glad to have returned to after eighteen years of ministry further south. He trained in mission with the Church Mission Society and served briefly in Korea, followed by two years at St Andrew’s Church, Kowloon in Hong Kong. The experience of living as a minority was a profound one as was the vibrancy and energy of Christianity in SE Asia. Returning to the UK in 2007 as vicar in Blackheath, he was glad to be living in the diversity of Southwark Diocese and enjoyed being partnered with Musoma Cathedral in Mara Diocese (Tanzania) where he was made an Honorary Canon in 2013. In 2014 he moved to Deptford as Team Rector of the Ravensbourne Team. He served as Area of Deptford, Secretary to the Lewisham Interfaith Forum and Chair of the Lewisham Churches Refugee and Asylum Seeker Project. Church life in Deptford was rich with a congregation drawn largely from African and Caribbean heritage. Recently Peter has returned to study, pursuing a course in Spirituality with Sarum College, Salisbury. His first degree was Biblical Studies in Sheffield and then an MA in Pastoral Theology whilst at Ridley Hall, Cambridge.

Peter is married to Andrea. They met and married in Sheffield. Andrea is currently leaving her role in the probation service and moving to a new post as Staff Support Chaplain with the Leeds Hospitals; she begins her ordination training in September. They have two adult sons: Sheffield, who works and lives in London, and Hudson, who is at university in Leeds.

Peter enjoys the outdoors – walking and running with friends and the dogs. Sharing meals, hosting guests, and journeying alongside people with different life experiences are also on the list of things that he enjoys and that have shaped him. He’s looking forward to getting to know Wakefield, forming new friendships, and joining in with what God is doing in this city. He is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the historic ministry at the Cathedral and looking froward to the focus on mission. How can we serve our city better? Any ideas or answers, he’d love to hear from you!

The Collation

The Dean leads the Residentiary Canon-designate to stand before the Bishop and says

Right Reverend Father in God, I present to you Peter Farley-Moore to be Collated as Residentiary Canon in this Cathedral Church.

The Bishop greets the candidate and then reads

The Preface to the Declaration of Assent

The Church of England is part of the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of , Priests and Deacons.

In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making Him known to those in your care?

The Residentiary Canon-designate, facing the congregation, makes

The Declaration of Assent

I, Peter James Farley-Moore, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only those forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.

The Oath of Allegiance

I, Peter James Farley-Moore, do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors according to Law: so help me God.

Then (facing the Bishop) makes

The Oath of Canonical Obedience

I, Peter James Farley-Moore, do swear by Almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord Bishop of Leeds and his successors in all things lawful and honest: so help me God.

The Residentiary Canon-designate, faces the Dean and makes

The Declaration of Obedience to the Cathedral Statutes

I, Peter James Farley-Moore, being now duly appointed to be Residentiary Canon in this Cathedral Church of All Wakefield, declare that I will faithfully observe and keep all its Statutes, By-laws and approved Customs, that I will carry out all the duties of my office and be ready to undertake any other duties hereafter assigned to me by the Bishop: so help me God.

The Psalmody Psalm 85

Lord, thou art become gracious unto thy land: thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob.

Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people : and covered all their sins. Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure : and turned thyself from thy wrathful indignation.

Turn us then, O God our Saviour : and let thine anger cease from us.

Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever : and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another?

Wilt thou not turn again, and quicken us : that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Shew us thy mercy, O Lord : and grant us thy salvation.

I will hearken what the Lord God will say concerning me : for he shall speak peace unto his people, and to his saints, that they turn not again.

For his salvation is nigh them that fear him : that glory may dwell in our land.

Mercy and truth are met together : righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Truth shall flourish out of the earth : and righteousness hath looked down from heaven.

Yea, the Lord shall shew loving-kindness : and our land shall give her increase.

Righteousness shall go before him : and he shall direct his going in the way.

Glory be to the Father : and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning : is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 7

First Reading Wisdom 9.1-12

Read by Dr Robert Pecksmith.

‘O God of my ancestors and Lord of mercy, who have made all things by your word, and by your wisdom have formed humankind to have dominion over the creatures you have made, and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgement in uprightness of soul, give me the wisdom that sits by your throne, and do not reject me from among your servants. For I am your servant, the son of your servant-girl, a man who is weak and short-lived, with little understanding of judgement and laws; for even one who is perfect among human beings will be regarded as nothing without the wisdom that comes from you. You have chosen me to be king of your people and to be judge over your sons and daughters. You have given command to build a temple on your holy mountain, and an in the city of your habitation, a copy of the holy tent that you prepared from the beginning. With you is wisdom, she who knows your works and was present when you made the world; she understands what is pleasing in your sight and what is right according to your commandments.

Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of your glory send her, that she may labour at my side, and that I may learn what is pleasing to you. For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory. Then my works will be acceptable, and I shall judge your people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.

We stand. 8

The Magnificat Wood in G

My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

We sit.

Second Reading Galatians 4.1-5

Read by Andrea Farley-Moore.

My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.

We stand.

The Nunc Dimittis Wood in G

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace : according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen : thy salvation;

Which thou hast prepared : before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles : and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholick Church; the Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of sins; the Resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

10

The Responses Plainsong

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray:

We sit.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Endue thy Ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful.

O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

11

The Collects

The Collect of the Day We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts; that, as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of Ash Wednesday Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

The Collect for Aid against all Perils. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Sermon

The Right Revd , Bishop of Leeds.

The Anthem Ave Maria C Monteverdi

The Intercessions

The intercessions are led by Canon Peter Farley-Moore.

Loving God, You hold all our times in your hands, our past, our present, our future. Be close to us now as we remember all the difficulties and disappointments of the past year. Be especially close to all of us who are thinking of someone we loved and knew, but see no longer, whether family, friend, colleague or neighbour. Help us to trust that they are at peace with you, and comfort us with your presence.

Loving God, You place us in families and communities, and we give you thanks for all those around us who serve us and help us in so many ways. Especially we pray for Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, our Members of Parliament and Civic Leaders. Give wisdom to community leaders, to our schools, hospitals, care homes and other agencies who make a difference to our lives. Help each of us to have the courage to reach out with thanks and kindness to those around us and to speak words of faith as we share the good news of your love.

Loving God, We unite in prayer for the mission of this cathedral and our sister in Bradford and Ripon. We pray for Nicholas our Bishop and for the Diocese of Leeds. We ask for your help that through our daily lives and shared witness we might proclaim that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself. May all who hear the good news of your love in this place, be drawn to you. In your strength, help us to make our contribution to renewal and recovery from the challenges of the pandemic. We lift to you our Cathedral Chapter, staff, volunteers, café, bellringers, servers and choir; our Mothers’ Union, outreach to schools, families and the elderly and we seek your blessing. Open our lives to new partnerships and a fresh commitment to justice as we serve our community.

Loving God, As we journey towards Easter, help us to live as people of hope, knowing that beyond the pain of the cross lies the joy of resurrection. Inspire us in our worship, through our churches and in our homes, that we may bring glory to you and joy to others.

13

Be with those who are struggling in mind, body or spirit, and give courage to those who are facing uncertainty and change ahead. Help each of us to keep our eyes fixed on you, that we may reflect your light to all whom we meet.

The intercessions finish with the Grace:

All The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Anthem I will lift up mine eyes E Walker

We stand.

The Blessing

The Bishop says

The Lord be with you. All And also with you.

The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. All Amen.
