For the second year in a row and for the fourth time in the eight years it has been awarded, Morehead State has earned the Ohio Valley C011ference Academic Achievement Banne,: The Banner is given annually to the school whose athletes have the highest grade average compared to the average for the entire student body. MSU's athletes had a combined grade point average of 2. 74, which was not only the best in the conference compared to the entire student body, but also was the top overall grade point average among the nine league schools. Dr. Frank Spaniol Head Coach Dr. Frank Spaniol enters his sixth season as head baseball coach at Morehead State. Last season's Eagle squad advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament before closing out the season with a 29-25 record. The 1993 Eagles won the OVC Tournament. Spaniol's five-year record is I 37- 122. Only the eighth head coach in the last 50 years to guide the MSU baseball program, Spaniol spent two seasons as an assistant baseball coach at MSU. Prior to his two years as an MSU assistant, Spaniol gained coaching experience at the high school level at his alma mater, Serra High School in San Diego, and at Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida, in 1984 and 1986 respectively. A former MSU baseball player for two seasons, Spaniol, 34, helped lead the 1983 Eagle squad to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. He played two years for Mesa Communjty College in San Diego before coming to Morehead State in 1982. Spaniol earned a bachelor's degree in physical education­ secondary education from MSU in 1984 and a master's degree in physical education in 1985, also from Morehead State University. He earned a Doctorate in Exercise Science from the Uruversity of Mississippj in 1989. The University Historically Morehead State University traces its lineage to the Morehead Normal School, which opened its dooL"s in 1887. Since its founding as a state inslilution in 1922, MSU has grown from a teachers college to a regional uni versi Ly that serves Kentucky and Appalachia. Until university status was granted in 1966, the institution's primary mission was the training of teachers. However, lhe curriculum now embraces nearly 140 academic programs on the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels. PhysicaUy, the University consists of more than fifty major structures valued at more than $1 10 million. There arc more than 36,000MSU al umni. Administratively, the University operates under an I ]-member Board of Regents that consists of eight citizens appointed by the governor ofK entucky, with three other seats held by elected faculty, staff and student representati ves. The administrative structure covers primarily four areas: academic affairs, administration and fiscal services, student life, and university advancement. Each of these units is headed by a vice president. There are approximately 8,600 men and women enrolled al Morehead State U niversity, of whom nearly 7,300 arc undergraduates. The University recognizes more than tOO student organizations, including 20 nationall y chartered fraternities and sororities, and sponsors a full program of intercollegiate and intramural athletics for men and women. MSU is basically a residential campus and has fi fteen residence halls. About 87 percent of its student body are Kentuckians. Allen Field John E. (Sonny) Allen Field has been the borne of the Eagles since 1973. The stadium, which seats 1,200, is named for John E. (Sonny) Allen, a standout athlete and successful coach at Morehead State. He was a four-year struter for the basketball Eagles and ranks third on the aU-time school scoring list with 1,923 points. Allen served as head baseball coach at MSU for 14 seasons, compiling a record of 226-137. He was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year three times as he gu ided Morehead State to confere nce championships in 1956, 1969 and 1973. In addition to the comfortable seating for spectators, Allen Field has dressing rooms for each team which lead directly to the dugouts. The home team's dressing area includes carpeting, showers and lockers. Also a 2,000 square foot indoor hitting/pitching facility is located adjacent to Allen Field.
