SECTION ONE: Purpose of Faith Lutheran School

1.1 THE PHILOSOPHY

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

All who have been brought to Faith in Jesus Christ are commissioned by Him to preserve and extend the kingdom of God. This becomes a corporate responsibility when Christians gather as a congregation.

When Faith Lutheran Church was founded, a Christian was established as a vital part of its total ministry. Presently, our school includes classes for children in through grade eight.

Quality Christian education occurs daily in all subjects to prepare children to serve God, their church, and their fellow human beings. In addition, all students are taught biblical truths, Christian values, and Lutheran Doctrine by Christian teachers, thus affording the Holy Spirit an opportunity to work faith in their hearts.

Worship in our school is not confined to the daily classroom devotion or to whole-school worship experiences, but occurs throughout the day. Children are encouraged to express their Christian faith in word and deed and to grow in their prayer life.

Teachers are to be Christian role models, foster worship in the school and the congregation, faithfully attend congregational worship, and participate in other aspects of congregational life. They are also to provide Christian discipline and age-appropriate instruction for all students in a safe, stable, and positive learning environment. This would include an atmosphere which accommodates special needs, promotes strengths, and respects the dignity of all.

The unique role of families and volunteers is recognized as a vital support system for the students, staff, and the success of the school’s ministry. Family oriented activities are promoted, as well as efforts to assist parents in their child-rearing responsibilities.

We provide the very best education possible through a continuous self-evaluation process. This assists us in recognizing areas of strength, identifying needs for improvement, and implementing changes where necessary.

1.2 MISSION STATEMENT

1.3 VISION STATEMENT Through God’s guidance and visionary leadership, Faith Lutheran will be engaged in

4 6

● encouraging an intentional ministry mindset and lifestyle, ● supporting a Christian day school ministry and Christian education for all ages, and ● providing for the physical and spiritual needs of our community and beyond.

People will know Jesus because of Faith.

1.4 CORE VALUES As the body of Christ, we value...

CHRISTIAN DAY SCHOOL MINISTRY We are committed to offering a Christ-centered education that challenges each child to reach his or her full potential and encourages every family to honor Christ in all aspects of their life. ● 2 Timothy 3:14-15 - But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ● Proverbs 22:6 - Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Faith Lutheran School is a prominent organization in providing a quality Christian educational experience for individuals and families of both members and non-members of Faith Lutheran Church. As such, this experience is rooted in Holy Scripture through the integration of Christian teaching across the curriculum and extracurricular activities.

CHRIST FIRST IN ALL THINGS We are committed to diligence in prayer, worship, and financial responsibility as a means of honoring Christ. We will strive for excellence in all things so that we may be the light of Christ to those in darkness. (Colossians 3:17; Proverbs 3:5-6)

TRUST IN GOD We are committed to wholeheartedly trusting in God. We have faith that the Holy Spirit will guide us, as individuals and as a church family, to fulfill His mission here on earth with grace and honor in His name. (Psalm 119:105; Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 8:28; Isaiah 41:10)

BIBLE-BASED TEACHING We are committed to strengthening our relationship with Christ through Biblical preaching and God's word; feeding our spirit through worship, faithful reception of the sacraments and diligent prayer. (Colossians 3:16; Romans 10:17)

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION We are committed to providing various opportunities where disciples of all ages are able to personally learn about Christ’s love, spirit, and truth, so they can grow in their faith and discover their baptismal identity. (Matthew 28:19-20;2 Timothy 3:16-17)

CONNECTING INWARD AND OUTWARD We are committed to living as God’s people, being ambassadors of God’s love and strength and creating an environment that is welcoming to all. We value all opportunities to serve, worship, and join in fellowship allowing us to serve in His name, spread His word, share His love, and value the gifts He has bestowed upon us. (3 John 1:5-8;Matthew 25: 35)

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN LIVES We are committed to a mission and ministry mindset that encourages us to be engaged in sharing our gifts and supporting others in love. Through this commitment, we pray that the light and love of Christ will shine through us. 5 6

(Matthew 5:16;Matthew 22:36-39) 1.5 SCHOOL GOALS These are the goals developed for the ministry of providing a quality Christian education: 1. To remain as an effective and vital part of the total ministry of Faith Lutheran Church 2. To maintain a quality Christian educational experience for all students 3. To provide an atmosphere that would allow students to express their Christian faith in word and deed and to grow in their prayer life 4. To call or contract a School Administrator and teachers who would function as Christian role models, provide Christian discipline, and utilize age-appropriate instruction in a safe, stable, and positive learning environment 5. To recognize the unique role of families and volunteers as a vital school support system 6. To promote family oriented activities and to assist parents in their child-rearing responsibilities 7. To maintain a continuous self-evaluation process and implement needed improvements to assure a high quality educational program

1.6 ADMINISTERING CHRISTIAN EDUCATION The Board of Christian Education, elected by the Faith Voters’ Assembly, is the controlling authority in the operation of Christian education at Faith Lutheran School. A summary of Board of Christian Education meetings will be published following the monthly meeting and minutes of the Board meetings and the principal’s report are available by contacting the office.

1.7 STATEMENT OF BELIEF

Faith Lutheran School is a Recognized Service Organization of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS, Synod). The LCMS is a mission-oriented and Bible-based denomination that confesses the historic, orthodox Christian faith in the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a faith built on “the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20). With the universal Christian Church, the LCMS teaches and responds to the love of the Triune God, who created all that exists; became a man to suffer, die, and rise again for the world’s redemption; and brings people to faith and new life through His Word and Sacraments. The three persons of the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - are coequal and coeternal, one God.

LCMS ministries voluntarily choose to belong to the Synod, and, although diverse in many ways, all hold to a shared confession of Jesus Christ as taught in Holy Scripture. We believe without reservation that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the written Word of God and the only rule and norm of faith and of practice. In addition, the LCMS accepts without reservation the writings contained in the Book of Concord: The Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Believing in the authority of Holy Scripture and that the Lutheran Confessions are a correct interpretation and presentation of biblical doctrine, LCMS ministries agree to conform all their teaching and practice to the Scriptures and the Confessions.

The Synod “is not an ecclesiastical government, exercising legislative or coercive powers” (LCMS Constitution, Article VII) concerning its members and ministers. However, the voluntary association of member ministries and ministers includes their agreement to respect and honor and uphold (Bylaw 1.7.2, 1.8.1) decisions (resolutions) made by the Synod in its national conventions regarding the understanding of the teachings of Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions and practices that are consistent with such teaching. The Synod in convention is the “principal legislative assembly” of the LCMS (Bylaw 3.1.1) and its resolutions and statements are the position of the synod in matters of doctrine and life. The Constitution and Bylaws of the LCMS provide specific guidance for the implementation and supervision of the teaching and practice of members.

6 6

Ministries of the LCMS, while upholding teachings and practices that are consistent with the Scripture and the Lutheran Confession and while honoring Synod convention resolution, are self-governed and establish policies based on local circumstance and expediency. An LCMS ministry operates according to its own constitution and bylaws - which are required by Synod Bylaws to be reviewed by the District through which the ministry holds membership in the Synod - and therein established an orderly way of making decisions and determines which individuals or entities within the ministry will have the authority to act on behalf of the ministry in specific circumstances. The Constitution and bylaws of Faith Lutheran School govern its decision-making and policies. A copy is available upon request.

1.7.1 Statement of Belief on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality

We believe that God wonderfully and immutable creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person.

We believe that the term marriage has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Genesis 2:18-25). We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other (1 Corinthians 6:18; 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4). We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage between a man and a woman.

We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Sexual immorality is wrong and cannot be condoned by Christians or Faith Lutheran School. Life is sacred and a gift of God. Faith Lutheran School will encourage and work with students and families with this belief in mind. Acknowledging sin and that we are sinners, together with a spirit of remorse leads to genuine repentance and forgiveness. Yet the result of sin has consequences, both of the natural and imposed nature. Sins which involve sexual immorality may lead to school discipline, which could include suspension or referral to the Board of Education for further actions.

1.7.2 Statement of the Sanctity of Human Life

We believe all human life is scared and created by God in His image. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life. (Psalm 139).

SECTION TWO: Administration of the School

2.1 ENROLLMENT AND REGISTRATION PROCESS ENROLLMENT: In keeping with the objectives of our school, to provide full-time Christian instruction for as many children as possible, pupils will be accepted in the following order:

For dual household families that share custody, BOTH parents must complete the Sign-off Form to acknowledge the policies and guidelines of Faith Lutheran School before their student(s) can attend.

2.2 CLASS LIMITS ○ Preschool classes follow state licensing guidelines nd ○ 25 students in Kindergarten through 2 grades rd th ○ 27 students in 3 - 8 grades If the classroom has reached its limit of enrolled students, a waiting list will be established based upon order received. The Board of Christian Education may take special conditions into consideration when it comes to placing a child into an already full classroom.

2.3 NON DISCRIMINATORY STATEMENT Faith Lutheran School admits students of any race, religion, color, national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school, and that the school does not discriminate on the basis of race in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, and other school-administered programs.

2.4 STUDENT HEALTH GUIDELINES Michigan law requires all immunizations to be up to date or a waiver on file in the office. If the record is not complete at registration, it must be within 30 days of entering school.

Forms for physical examinations are required to participate in the athletic programs offered at Faith Lutheran School, and are obtained from your doctor or the school office.

Our school falls under the care of the Bay County Health Department. Under this supervision, our students are also included in all school health programs such as hearing and vision screening.

We are asking parents to act responsibly when dealing with the following situations: 1. Contagious diseases - Parents should consult with a physician as to when it is safe for a student to return to the classroom. 2. Serious coughs, pinkeye symptoms, or excessive lack of energy need to be checked by a doctor.

8 6

3. Students with elevated temperatures need to remain home 24 hours after the fever is gone without medication. 4. Students who vomit or show other signs of possible illness should stay home a minimum of 24 hours.

2.5 FINANCES Adequate financial support is essential to operate a good . The congregation maintains Faith’s day school. The congregation calls the teachers and therein assumes the responsibility of salaries and benefits for their livelihoods. Each school parent of Faith is asked to generously support the total effort of the congregation in this regard through their church offerings.

2.5.1 TUITION POLICIES AND REGISTRATION FEES

2.5.2 MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES AND FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION POLICY

As of June 2018 Faith Lutheran Bylaws require members to attend Faith Lutheran Church services a minimum of 12 times per year to maintain active membership status. Due to the fact that our church contributes at a minimum 47% of the total tuition cost for families who are members at Faith, the Board of Education has an attendance requirement of 18 out of 65 offered services at Faith Lutheran from September 1st through the first day of the next year to be granted the Faith Member tuition rate. If a family does not meet these worship attendance

10 6

requirements by the first day of school, they will be charged the community member rate for the next school year. Attendance will be maintained using the church attendance binders, in the pews. You can contact the office at any time to receive an attendance report.

The Board of Christian Education urges all parents of children attending Faith Lutheran School to review the financial support they are providing for our Church and School. We, the Board of Christian Education, feel it is the responsibility of all members of Faith to provide the moral and financial support required to maintain the programs operated by our church. The School is just one of these programs. However, we also feel that parents whose children attend Faith Lutheran School have an additional responsibility. It is a parental duty to provide financial support for the Christian education children receive at Faith Lutheran School. To that end, parents are encouraged to consider the idea of “percentage giving” or a “tithe” (10%) as they set aside a portion of the income God has provided them to use in his ministry.

2.5.3 FINANCIAL HARDSHIP POLICY PROCEDURE Unforeseen hardships can be presented to the Board as they arise. All requests will be kept confidential, and each request will be considered in a Christian manner. For more information on the Financial Assistance Policy see the Business Manager.

2.5.4 FINANCIAL POLICY FOR NEW MEMBERS Fellow Lutherans, who become members by transfer or parents who join through adult instruction, will be placed under the tuition guidelines after their membership has been approved by the Voter’s Assembly or Church Council, whichever comes first. Tuition and church attendance requirements will be prorated based upon their date they were voted into membership by our church council. Prorating will be done on a monthly basis.

2.5.5 VOLUNTEER TUITION CREDIT PROGRAM We offer a tuition credit program for families that volunteer for approved activities for a total of 10 hours per year. The tuition credit will be the difference between the 2018-19 tuition rate and 2019-20 rate for one student. All volunteers must adhere to the volunteer policy (See 2.9) and turn in the Volunteer Tuition Credit Program Agreement with their registration paperwork to participate. Families will need to have volunteer opportunities approved before they begin, and track their own volunteer hours in Sycamore. It is the family's responsibility to seek out opportunities allowing adequate time for planning prior to required completion dates. Families are required to log hours into Sycamore under “My School-->Service Logs”. In the notes section they must indicate who approved the hours and what was completed. Hours must be completed and entered by May 15th unless you have approval to extend. All 10 hours must all be completed to receive the credit. We do not prorate for lower amounts. The credit will be applied by May 31st. Dual Families (multiple households) will each need to review separately with the School Business Manager and hours and credit will be prorated based on distribution of financial responsibility. Families receiving financial assistance are not allowed to participate. The volunteer tuition credit program is separate from the Athletic requirements, Wildcat Work Crews and assigned classroom activity (see section 2.5.6).

2.5.6 REQUIRED FAMILY PARTICIPATION Families are required to sign up for one monthly clean team (Wildcat Work Crew) per calendar year and must participate in one classroom event planning activity. Classroom events will be presented at class huddles. After missing one event, parents will be billed $100. After missing two events, parents will be billed $200.

2.6 CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINE Attendance at Faith Lutheran School is an honor and a privilege. A student who chooses to attend, accepts the responsibility of behavior consistent with the philosophy and guidelines of the school. This includes respect in word

11 6

and action for Church members, parents, community, school staff, and fellow students at all times. Discipline in our school will be in keeping with God’s Word with repentance, forgiveness, and positive change as the ultimate goal. When a student purposefully violates the rules of Christian conduct, the student must understand that his/her actions have consequences.

2.6.1 RESPECT POLICY Respect is a cornerstone of our relationships. We are committed to respecting the dignity and worth of each individual at our school and strive never to degrade or diminish any member of our school community by our conduct, actions, or attitudes. We benefit from each other. Our faith and relationship with our Savior and our Faith family makes us strong.

2.6.2 SCHOOL RESPONSE TO BULLYING AND HARASSMENT Harassment or bullying of students or staff undermines our school’s commitment of respect. Bullying and harassment are prohibited by state and federal law, as well as school policy. Our school will not tolerate bullying or harassment of students or staff. 2.6.4 DISCIPLINE STEPS Parents will be informed by the teacher when misbehavior occurs that warrants further discussion. Minor infractions will be handled in-house as needed.

STEP 1 – Teacher/Student The teacher will communicate to the student that he/she is misbehaving, and, if necessary, the teacher and the student will communicate why the misbehavior is undesirable or unacceptable.

STEP 2 – Teacher/Parents The teacher will keep parents informed without having to report every infraction to them. However, when the teacher feels that the behavior warrants it, the parents will be informed and further action will be discussed.

STEP 3 - Behavior Detention A detention may be assigned by a teacher, the School Administrator, or pastors for either a specific incident or chronic behavior for which the student is not responding to correction. Detentions will last forty-five (45) minutes after school ends and may require a student to complete extra school work or clean/improve Faith’s campus. Students assigned behavior detentions may be assigned to attend the Academic Detention time. Parents will receive a written notice of the detention which will need to be signed and returned by the student the next day. Students who receive three (3) detentions in a given quarter will move to the next step of the discipline process (in school suspension).

The only exceptions to serving a detention are a student illness with parental note of excuse, doctor appointment verified with a doctor’s note, attendance at a funeral, or a family emergency. In these cases, parents must request a postponement in writing when the detention notice is returned. Failure to return a signed detention notice, request for a postponement, or to serve an unexcused detention within two (2) school days will result in the earning of an additional detention. If a child fails to show up for a detention, an extra detention must be served. If the next detention is also missed, a conference with the School Administrator will be required for the child to return to the classroom.

Written documentation of the discipline steps taken up to this point will be created by the School Administrator, signed by all parties involved, and placed in the student’s file. Any student serving a detention will be unable to participate in that day’s extracurricular activities.

STEP 4 - In-School Suspension An in-school suspension administered by the School Administrator may last up to five (5) school days. On the days of an in-school suspension, the student will: ○ complete assignments from teachers during the day(s) of suspension. ○ complete cleaning and/or improvement activities ○ work and eat lunch alone ○ not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities including academic and athletic activities (practices and/or games)

13 6

On the last day of the suspension, a conference will be held involving the student, teacher(s), parents, and School Administrator to discuss the reason for the suspension and how the student will correct the actions leading to the suspension. The student and parents will be reminded that the next step in the procedure is an out of school suspension. The parent/guardian will sign a disciplinary form which will be recorded in the student’s file with a copy being sent to the Board of Christian Education Chairperson.

STEP 5 - Out of School Suspension An out of school suspension may last up to ten (10) school days. On the days of out of school suspension, the student will: ○ complete assignments from teachers during the days of suspension. ○ not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities including academic and athletic extracurricular activities (practices and games)

During the days of suspension, parents are encouraged to reinforce the school’s discipline in an appropriate way at home. On the last day of the suspension, a conference will be held involving the student, teacher(s), parents, School Administrator, possibly pastor, and Board of Christian Education Chairperson to discuss the reason for the suspension and how the student will correct the actions leading to the suspension. The student and parents will be reminded that the next step in the procedure is expulsion. The parent/guardian will sign a disciplinary form which will be recorded in the student’s disciplinary file with a copy being kept by the Board of Christian Education Chairperson.

STEP 6 - Expulsion When every effort to bring about positive results has failed, the student will be expelled from school and left in the care of the parents and/or guardians. Expulsion is final and permanent. Students may never re-enroll. 2.8 CHILD ABUSE SUSPICION POLICY All school staff members are mandated reporters and MUST report immediately any suspected child abuse to the Centralized Intake (State of Michigan Department of Human Services) and within 72 hours complete their report. Teachers and staff members must make the School Administrator aware of the report that has been made to the State of Michigan Department of Human Services. All reports will be kept in confidence.

2.9 VOLUNTEER POLICY Our School Community has the great blessing and responsibility to serve our children. We are here to assist our Parents in their sacred call to be the primary educators of their children in our Faith. We can only do this as a shared and collaborative effort, so we ask all of our parents to exercise that “stewardship” to which all are called and share their resources of “time, talent, and treasure”.

Volunteers are a vital part of Faith Lutheran School. Volunteers are an extension of our Faith family. Partnering with us through volunteerism is a wonderful expression of what our School truly is; a joint effort of our church, school families, administration, teachers and support staff, sustained by the Holy Spirit, to bring the presence of Christ and His Kingdom to our world.

Volunteers at Faith Lutheran are expected to serve as Christian role models for our students. Classification of Volunteers ● Leadership - Volunteers in formal leadership roles (i.e.. Board of Education, PTL, boosters) and those who regularly work directly with students (i.e. volunteer tutors, coaches, librarians) are required to sign the commitment to Faith’s statement of beliefs. Leadership volunteers who regularly work directly with students will complete a background check through the Michigan State Police ICHAT form. ● Regular - Volunteers who regularly work at the school, however, their work with students is on a limited impersonal basis. This includes volunteers who assist with school maintenance, ongoing athletic contest management (i.e. scorekeeping, bookkeeping, concession workers), volunteers who work with students in a private setting on a limited basis (i.e. testing assistants), and volunteers who accompany students on school sponsored overnight trips (Washington D.C. trip). Regular volunteers are required to sign the commitment to Faith’s statement of beliefs. Regular volunteers will complete a background check through the Michigan State Police ICHAT form.

17 6

● Occasional - Volunteers who work at the school on a limited and irregular basis (i.e. assisting in the concession stand at school events, assisting with admissions to school events, specific building maintenance tasks, assisting with school publications and/or mailings.) Occasional volunteers will complete a background check through the Michigan State Police ICHAT form.

The service of volunteers who do not meet these requirements will be discontinued.

2.10 MEDIA RELEASE

Faith Lutheran regularly publishes information, electronic and print, about our programs through a variety of official means. Examples include Faith’s website and Facebook page, the school newsletter, yearbook, local newspapers, and school marketing materials. Since each of these is a way of publicly communicating information about minor children, parents/guardians have the right to object to their child’s picture or work being shared. It is the parents responsibility to inform the school office, in writing if they want their child(ren) to be omitted from media publications. Faith will omit from using in media publications as of the date the notice is signed as received in the school office. All publications prior to that day will still be available for Faith to use.

2.11 SCHOOL MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

Faith Lutheran provides an online school management website for parents to stay up to date with information pertaining to all aspect of the school year including financial information. It is the parent’s responsibility to maintain current contact and medical information pertaining to their family and students. All communications to parents will be sent via this system using the emails listed in the parent’s personal information. Parents also need to add any person that is allowed to pick up their child as a contact in this system. If a person comes to pick up during the school day and is not documented in the student’s account they will not be released until a parent verbally confirms approval.

SECTION THREE: Administration of the Curriculum

3.1 THE CHRISTIAN CURRICULUM In keeping with the purpose and mission of Faith Lutheran School, the curriculum is based on the Word of God. The student has the opportunity to hear God’s Word taught daily in all its truth and purity. It is our aim to impress into the hearts and minds of the children entrusted to us a truly Christian philosophy of life.

In keeping with the Christian philosophy and with respect to the educational requirements of the State of Michigan, our children receive a thorough education following current best practices of the 21st century classroom.

3.2 BAND The band program at Faith is available to all students in grades 5 – 8. Group instrumental instruction for students takes place during the school day. Our teacher is provided by Valley Lutheran High School. Students are to rent or purchase their own instruments. The band performs at two (2) mandatory concerts yearly and is combined with other Lutheran in the area for Friday afternoon rehearsals six (6) times a year.

3.3 PHYSICAL EDUCATION Regular physical education classes are included in the schedule of each grade. All students must wear gym or tennis shoes for P.E. classes. All children are expected to participate in these gym classes. If a child cannot take part, an excuse in writing should be brought to the school and given to the classroom teacher. When a child is excused from

18 6

gym class, the child will accompany the class to the gym and remain under the supervision of the teacher. Any child in need of an inhaler must provide their own inhaler and carry it with them to each gym class.

While recess is not part of the physical education curriculum, it does provide opportunities for quality physical activity. Children are required to participate with their class during periods of recess. Children are not to remain indoors when the rest of the class is participating in the outdoor activity, unless they are requested to remain indoors by their teacher.

In addition to this, the school will participate in the Tri-County Lutheran Schools Athletic League in competitive sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track.

3.4 OUTDOOR EDUCATION This opportunity offers seventh grade students a unique three (3) day outdoor educational experience. Teachers and full time camp counselors provide the instruction and leadership during the program. Parents of participating students are responsible for the cost of this experience.

3.5 EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Faith Lutheran School offers a variety of extracurricular activities throughout the year. Past activities have included choir, athletics, spelling bee, and the music festival. Other activities will be offered throughout the school year that will highlight student strengths.

3.6 LUTHERAN SPECIAL EDUCATION MINISTRY (LSEM) Faith provides for a specially trained teacher through LSEM, who works with students who have special needs. This teacher can help diagnose, assess, and implement ways to help students with special needs achieve learning outcomes.

Please refer to Section 2.1 for information regarding the enrollment of special-needs students.

3.7 PROMOTION POLICY A variety of factors will be weighed in determining promotion to the succeeding grade. The child’s ability and effort, his/her emotional factors, and any other factors that help or hinder his/her progress must be considered. At all times, we must keep in mind what is best for the child. If retention is the best option, parents will be notified in advance, and discussions will take place between parents/guardians, teachers, and School Administrator.

3.8 TECHNOLOGY The use of technology during Faith’s school day is an integral part of a student’s education. The students and staff also have access to the Internet. These technologies offer vast, diverse, and unique resources to both the students and staff. However, the use of technology and the Internet is also a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use can result in a cancellation of those privileges and, potentially, other disciplinary actions.

3.8.1 Acceptable Use Policy Students will be held responsible for their actions and activity while using technology at Faith. Students should understand that as they access the Internet they must ..”take captive every thought to make it obedient to … Christ.” (II Corinthians 10:5b)

Faith is pleased to offer its students access to the Internet and use of technology. The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual subscribers. Students and teachers have access to: Information and news from NASA as well as the opportunity to correspond with the scientists at NASA and † other research institutions.

19 6

Public domain software and graphics of all types for school use. † Discussion groups on a plethora of topics ranging from Chinese culture to the environment to music to † politics. Access to many Library Catalogs, the Library of Congress, and ERIC, a large collection of relevant † information to educators and students. Graphical access to the World Wide Web, the newest and most exciting access tool on the Internet. †

The Internet and technology can be a tool for lifelong learning. Parents should be aware that some materials accessible via the Internet might contain items that are illegal, sinful, inappropriate, defamatory, inaccurate, or potentially harmful. We, as Christians, need to guard against the improper use and instead be witnesses and share our faith by proper use of these resources.

With access to computers and people all over the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. Faith Lutheran School has taken precautions to restrict access to controversial materials. However, on a global network it is impossible to control all materials and an industrious user may discover controversial information. We (Faith Lutheran School) firmly believe that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network far outweighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of our school.

Internet access is coordinated through a complex association of government agencies, and regional and state networks. In addition, the smooth operation of the network relies upon the proper conduct of the end users who must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided here so that you are aware of the responsibilities you are about to acquire. In general this requires efficient, ethical, and legal utilization of the network resources. If a Faith Lutheran School user violates any of these provisions, his or her account will be terminated and future access could possibly be denied.

1. Acceptable Use – What constitutes acceptable use? ● Technology should be used in a way that will treat other people in a God pleasing manner. Therefore, sending harassing or degrading messages, using e-mail to bear false witness or spread rumors, or posting anonymous messages or personal communications without the original author’s consent is prohibited. Any use of the computer which demeans another person in a manner that is contrary to God’s Word will not be tolerated. ● Interfering with the work of another student or teacher is prohibited. Students may not degrade or disrupt the normal function of hardware or software so that the performance of these items is damaged. Neither may students use technology in a way that is disruptive or harmful to students, teachers, or the classroom environment. Any student who uses a computer in a manner that is outside the parameters established by the instructor is subject to disciplinary action. ● The privacy of other people is to be respected. Any invasion of the privacy of another person is in violation of the school technology use policy/agreement. Students may not intentionally access messages, files, or work of another student or teacher, nor alter it in any way. ● Students using technology are expected to uphold the 7th commandment. It is ILLEGAL to violate copyright laws. Copying of program files (as opposed to personal files or student work) is prohibited except with approval and supervision of the instructor. ● Students are expected to use computers only as instructed by their teacher. Students may not gain any unauthorized access to programs, resources, or on-line sites. Similarly, students are expected to maintain individual computer settings. These settings (such as backgrounds, icons, screensavers, etc ) may not be … altered without instructor permission. ● Students may not use technology at Faith for their own commercial or financial gain. ● Students are expected to adhere to Internet guidelines as printed in number 3 below.

20 6

2. Privileges - The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. The system administrators will deem what is inappropriate use and their decision is final. Also, the system administrators may close an account at any time as required. The administration, faculty, and staff of Faith Lutheran School may use one of the following consequences for violations of the Acceptable Use Policy are as follows: ● parent notification and computer access denied. ● suspension ● expulsion

3. Network Etiquette - You are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include (but are not limited to) the following: ● Be polite. Do not get abusive in your messages to others. Use appropriate language. Do not swear, use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language. ● Illegal activities are strictly forbidden. ● Do not reveal your personal address or phone numbers of students or colleagues. ● Note that electronic mail (email) is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system do have access to all mail. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities may be reported to the authorities. ● Do not use the network in such a way that you would disrupt the use of the network by other users. ● All communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed to be private property.

4. Security - Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem on the Internet, you must notify a teacher. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Do not use another individual's account without written permission from that individual. Attempts to connect to the Internet as a system administrator will result in cancellation of user privileges. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to Internet.

5. Vandalism - Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges with the possibility of suspension or expulsion. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user, Internet, or any of the above listed agencies or other networks that are connected to any of the Internet backbones. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.

Faith Lutheran School makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. Faith Lutheran School will not be responsible for any damages you suffer. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at your own risk. Faith Lutheran School specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through its services.

3.8.2 1 to 1 Policy 1 to 1 is a program designed to put Chromebooks into the hands of individual students. Faith Lutheran is implementing a 1 to 1 program with the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes. These Chromebooks are required and will be purchased by the students’ parents. Chromebooks will be assigned to the individual students the same as they are assigned lockers, desks, books, etc.. Families are purchasing the Chromebooks and they are yours for your time at Faith and into the future. No laptops will be allowed, due to lack of security measures and the ability to monitor student usage while in school.

3.8.3 Chromebook Responsibilities and Use Policy The purpose of providing Chromebooks to students is to create a collaborative learning environment both between teachers and students and between students. Several subject areas will access textbook and information through the Chromebook. Middle School students will be using Google Classroom to create, share, and turn in class assignments.

21 6

The Acceptable Use Policies for Elementary and Middle Schools, the 1 to 1 Policy, and the Chromebook Responsibilities and Use Policy are on file in the school office. Copies are given to parents at registration. The teachers will go through the policies with the students during the first days of the school year. Parents and students must sign and return the policies agreement form to the school office.

3.9 IMMUNIZATIONS Faith Lutheran is required to verify and report to the State of Michigan the immunization status of all kindergarteners, 7th graders and new students to Faith each school year. Students are required to be up-to-date with all immunizations, or have official waivers from the Health Department on file in the school office by Nov 1st. After that date if students are not current they will not be allowed to attend school until immunizations are administered or waivers are obtained per state requirements. Please see www.MCIR.org for information on how to obtainer waivers or schedule immunization appointments. We also have to repeat this process in February to ensure students stay current throughout the school year. Contact your physician to get the current status of immunizations and find out when students are due.

3.10 ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY When enrolling their students at Faith Lutheran School parents independently and voluntary decide to allow their child(ren) to participate in the daily operations conducted by Faith Lutheran and related activities. They understand that their child’s participation may entail certain anticipated and unanticipated risks regarding personal injury. They hereby acknowledge their voluntary and informed assumption on behalf of their child(ren) of full responsibility and liability regarding any injuries that the child may incur coincident to their participation in any activity. Parents hereby assume any and all risks on behalf of their child associated with the activities offered by Faith Lutheran, and expressly waive, release, discharge and hold harmless Faith Lutheran Church & School, its servants, agents, employees, affiliates, and assigns from and against any and all liability for loss, damage, injury, illness or claim of any nature whatsoever, however caused, arising out of, in association with, or related in any way to their or their child’s participation.

SECTION FOUR: Student Procedures

4.1 THE SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR ● We are required by Michigan State law to be in session for 180 days. We start school before Labor Day and end after Memorial Day. We set our own school calendar. Although the county ISDs do have a fixed calendar for their public schools, Faith has never agreed nor are we required to follow that. We follow God’s schedule for Easter, so that as much as we are able, Spring Break would be the week following Holy Week. This way, the teachers can focus on teaching of Christ’s death and resurrection during the church year celebration of Holy Week. On the years when it does not line up (such as this year with Easter falling late) we work to make an appropriate balance of when our longer breaks will be throughout the year based on marking periods.

4.2 THE SCHOOL DAY The outside door opens at 7:30 a.m. School begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. Preschool parents, please check for your child’s starting and ending times. Students and parents are expected to enter and exit via the designated school entrances. All doors to the building will be locked at 8:00 a.m. Anyone entering the building on a school day after 8:00 a.m. will have to enter the vestibule at the school entrance, buzz the office, and wait for the doors to be electronically opened. Parents and students should NEVER open the doorto let someone in the school, especially a person they do not know. 22 6

4.3 VISITORS All parents/grandparents/visitors MUST SIGN IN at the office to receive correct identification pass.

4.4 COMMUNICATING WITH FACULTY AND STAFF Parents are asked not to interrupt a class that is in session, either in person or via text message. Please leave a message with a secretary, and she will give it to the teacher at an appropriate time. Please do not expect a teacher to reply to your messages or emails during teaching time. Their main priority is teaching your children. Emergencies need to come through the office.

Communicating with faculty and staff, after school hours, may be communicated before 7:00 pm. Do not expect a response back until their next planning period.

4.5 SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS School cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on radio and TV. When the term “Bangor Township Schools” is used, this includes Faith Lutheran School. Faith families are also strongly encouraged to sign up for Remind via text message in order to receive information directly via text or the smart phone application regarding school cancellations.

4.6 CHILDREN DROPPED OFF BEFORE 7:30AM Children dropped off before 7:30 a.m. must be placed in Before care. They must be dropped off at the east entrance, signed in by a parent, and have completed the Before care/Aftercare paperwork. Please refer to the Before care/Aftercare handbook for information regarding cost.

4.7 STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY Parents of children who need to leave school early should come to the office to sign out the child. The secretary will request the child to come to the office. For safety purposes, children will not be allowed to wait outside or in the hallway by themselves. Only authorized adults will be allowed to pick up children from school.

If someone other than the parent or guardian is picking up the child, a note or phone call to the office must occur first in order to specify the authorized adult that will be picking up the child. Students need to be signed out in the school office by the adult picking up the child and identification will be checked.

4.8 AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP For the safety of the children, all car riders (including kindergarteners) will be dropped off and picked up at the west parking lot with the exception of the preschool children and their siblings. We encourage parents to wait in the parking lot for their child to be dismissed. If plans change for after school pick up, please communicate this to the office. After 2:00 P.M., parents can get emergency messages to students by calling the office number. Please call the office NO later than 2:30 P.M., except for extreme emergencies, in order to assure messages are transmitted to the classroom.

For after school pick-up, we ask that you use either the one-way traffic pattern in the west parking lot or park and personally pick up and escort your child to your vehicle, being sure to use the crosswalk at all times. For the continuous line of traffic, enter via the first entrance off Two Mile Road. For safety reasons, please DO NOT ENTER the parking lot from Wilder Road. This will allow a better view of any movement within the parking lot around your vehicle. Once your children are safely in the car, please slowly proceed out the northern Two Mile Road exit. Be aware of children and parents using the crosswalk and yield accordingly.

23 6

If you are planning to park and come into the building to pick up your child after school, we would ask that you park in the three northernmost rows of the parking lot. Please come and pick up your child at the school entrance if you are parking instead of waiting in the continuous line of traffic.

Students may not leave the school property unless authorized by school personnel. After students have been dismissed, they are under the care of their parents and may not play on the playground unless supervised by parents. Faith Lutheran claims no responsibility for students after school playing on the playground.

Families utilizing the Aftercare Program should refer to the Aftercare handbook for policies and procedures.

4.8.1 CHILDREN NOT PICKED UP We would encourage all parents to consider use of Faith’s Aftercare program as a bridge from the end of the school day to when they are able to pick up their child. If your child is not picked up by 3:10 p.m., they will be sent to Aftercare and parents will be charged $4.00 per 30 minutes per child as a late fee with a minimum of $4.00 charged. Checks may be made payable to Faith Lutheran School. If your child is sent to Aftercare, you will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines: ○ Students will only be released to their parent or guardian unless other arrangements have been made. ○ As a parent, you have the right to inspect licensing rules found in the Licensing Notebook which contains summary indicating inspections of the program’s license. ○ Any and all health and immunization records including physical restrictions and health records provided to the school office will be shared with Faith’s Aftercare director and assistant. The Aftercare supervisors will also have access to your child’s emergency contact information. ○ If your child is here for sports activities that do not begin immediately at 3:15 pm, they must go to Aftercare or make arrangements with the Athletic Director. They will not be allowed to roam the school hallways or wait in the gym or gym locker rooms. ○ Students being picked up from Aftercare for a sports activity by another person will need permission on file with Aftercare.

4.8.2 BUS TRANSPORTATION Students who live in Bangor Township and attend Faith are privileged to ride the Bangor School busses at no expense to the parents (paid by Bangor School tax). All students must follow the Bangor Township School District’s policies while riding the bus. Please refer to the Bangor Township website for any discrepancies in school day schedules or early release dates. Questions or concerns should be addressed to the Director of Transportation for Bangor School District at 989-684-6150.

4.8.3 WALKING HOME Students who may be walking to or from school must have a signed waiver on file in the school office. Faith assumes no responsibility for children who walk home.

4.9 ATTENDANCE / ABSENCES In accordance with the laws of the State of Michigan, it is the parent’s responsibility to see to it that each child of school age is in attendance whenever school is in session. Students are expected to be in school unless circumstances arise such as illness, funerals, doctor’s appointments and the like. If a student is absent, for 5 consecutive days due to illness, a doctor’s excuse is necessary for readmittance to school. Parents must exercise discretion and good judgement when keeping a child home. Likewise, for their own sake as well as concern for others, students should not be in school when they are ill. Students may return to school 24 hours after a fever has returned to normal or 24 hours after vomiting has subsided. In order to promote student success, Faith Lutheran expects regular attendance by all students. Frequent absences are likely to impact student performance. The procedure for an unplanned absence (illness, etc.) is as follows: 1. Call the school office on the day of an absence to explain the reason for the absence. 2. Make arrangements to pick up make-up assignments. 24 6

3. For each day absent, a student has one day to complete missing assignments, after he/she has returned to school. Teachers will record absences through the school management software. Excused absences/tardies would include doctor’s visits, dental or orthodontic visits, illness, or funerals.

Children who miss more than 30 minutes of classroom time unexcused in the morning or afternoon will be marked absent for that half of the day. An excess of twenty total unexcused absences throughout the school year may make it necessary for the student to repeat the grade.

Students missing three class periods any given day will be marked ½ day absent. Four or more missed class periods constitutes a full day of absence. Unexcused tardiness after 10:00 A.M. makes one in-eligible for extracurricular activities that day. If a student arrives after 9:54 A.M. or leaves prior to 1:07 P.M. the student will be marked absent ½ day.

4.9.1 PLANNED ABSENCES/VACATIONS Planned absences should be discussed with the classroom teacher to plan for necessary school work to be completed. Work given in advance of a planned absence must be completed upon the student’s return to the classroom. All work given is at the discretion of the classroom teacher prior to or after returning to the classroom. Students may be expected to complete work during breaks, including recess.

4.9.2 TARDIES Faith Lutheran considers reporting to school on time as very important. Students who arrive late not only compromise their own learning but also interrupt the learning of others within their classrooms. We ask parents to make every possible effort to have their children arrive to school each school morning no later than 7:35 A.M. so that students may be prepared to begin the school day promptly at 7:45 A.M.. Students arriving into the classroom after the bell has rung at 7:45 a.m. will be counted “Tardy”. Any student, regardless of age, who arrives after 8:00 a.m. MUST be signed-in by an adult in the front office.

Five tardies will be brought to the attention of the School Administrator, who may take appropriate action at his or her discretion. If the student needs to leave the school for any reason during the day (Early Exits), the front office must be notified of that occurrence in a written note or email. This information will then be shared with the classroom teacher. Students must be signed out by the parent in the office before leaving their classroom for an early exit.

After 8:00 am Student must be signed in by an adult in the front office ● 3rd Tardy within a marking period: A note or email will be sent home as a friendly reminder. ● 4th Tardy within a marking period: Teacher will contact parents. ● 5th Tardy within a marking period: Principal will contact parents for follow-up. ○ 5 tardies - Equals a detention and 1 day absent ○ 10 tardies - Equals a detention and 2 days absent; and a parent/student/School Administrator meeting ○ 15 tardies - Equals and in-school suspension; and parent/student/School Administrator/Board of Christian Education meeting ● Continued tardiness within a marking period may result in discipline per the school discipline per the school discipline policy. Twelve (12) tardies or twelve (12) unexcused or excused absences in a semester may initiate an inquiry by the School Administration. Absences of twenty-four (24) per school year, without a doctor’s note, may jeopardize promotion. A warning letter will be sent to parents after five (5) absences or tardies in a semester has been reached. ● Truancy will be reported to the State of Michigan per state law requirements.

4.10 CHAPEL SERVICES In addition to daily devotions, the children have another opportunity to assemble in the Sanctuary for weekly chapel services. Our Pastors, staff, and guests will lead these chapel worship services. Individual classes create and lead one chapel service per year. Students are encouraged to contribute to the offering during chapel and “dress-up’ on chapel days. Offerings go to a variety of charities as determined by the staff. Parents and visitors are always welcome to join us. When possible we also stream our chapel services on Facebook for parents and others to watch remotely.

th 4.11 FIELD TRIP RULES AND TRANSPORTATION/8 GRADE WASHINGTON D.C. CLASS TRIP Field trips are an excellent opportunity for learning outside of the classroom. Students wishing to participate will need a parent’s written permission prior to leaving on the field trip. Field trip days are considered school days and attendance will be taken.

Parents may be needed to transport students. If a parent volunteers to drive on a field trip, they will be asked and will need the ability to transport other students and/or chaperones. Parents should not make arrangements and/or alter student/chaperone/driver plans the teacher has put into place. Field trips are planned thoroughly by the teachers and are the responsibility of the teachers. While students are under school instruction, including fields trips, they are the responsibility of the school.

Parents of kindergarten through eighth grade students are not allowed to bring siblings along, unless approved by the administrator. Parents are expected to chaperone those students in their car. It is a special time for a parent and their child to share the day’s events with each other.

Drivers must have a copy of proof of insurance, a copy of a valid driver’s license and a completed and processed Background Check form on file in the office at least one day prior to driving or chaperoning a field trip. Vehicles must have proper number of seat belts for all the students they are transporting. All students must follow current state law for use of seatbelts and booster seats. Families are responsible for providing appropriate seating in accordance with state law.

As part of our curriculum and instruction, the eighth grade class will visit Washington D.C. prior to the end of the school year. Fundraisers are scheduled throughout the year to assist in raising the funds needed for the trip. Planning for this trip starts at the beginning of the school year in order to allow for ample preparation. Students not attending this trip are required to be in school and will be assigned work to complete in order to graduate.

4.12 PARENTAL CONCERNS Out of Christian love and concern, and in following the Biblical example of Matthew 18, parents are expected to follow these steps in resolution of their concerns: 1. The parent should make an appointment with the teacher to discuss the concern in private. At no time is it appropriate to interrupt the teacher and discuss the matter during school hours, in front of a classroom, or with students present or with other parents. 2. A meeting with the teacher, School Administrator, and parent to further discuss the concern.

If resolution has not been met with steps 1 and 2, a letter may be sent directly to the Chairman of the Board of Christian Education. Acknowledgement of the letter will be sent to the parent. All letters will be maintained by the Board of Christian Education. The Chairman of the Board of Christian Education will insure that the teacher and School Administrator have been informed of the concern through proper channels before officially presenting the letter. In a closed session, the Board of Christian Education will meet with the staff member(s) involved, School Administrator, pastors, and/or church representatives. Following this meeting a decision will be made regarding the outcome of the issue.

26 6

4.13 HOMEWORK Homework will be assigned to reinforce the educational process. Unfinished work from the school day may also be considered homework. Individual classroom policies regarding homework will be shared by that classroom’s teacher.

Homework for planned absences or vacations will follow the policy outlined in Section 4.1.

Students missing school due to illness or other extended medical absence or family emergency will be given one day for every day absent to make up any missed work.

4.14 ACADEMIC DETENTION An academic detention is intended to provide middle school students at Faith Lutheran School motivation to turn in homework regularly and on time and be prepared for class. Academic detentions are forty-five (45) minutes in length for students not handing in two (2) or more late or incomplete assignments in a week. The time of the detention will be 3:15-4:00 p.m. every Tuesday. Detentions are assigned on Friday of every week. ○ Late work is defined as an assignment not handed in at the time the teacher collects the work on the day it is due. ○ Each Middle School teacher will inform students of required materials and supplies. Examples include textbooks, binders, notebooks, and school supplies.

When a student is assigned an academic detention, parents will be notified on Friday that the detention will be served the following week with the missing assignments noted on the slip by the teacher assigning the detention.

The following are the only allowed reasons for missing an academic detention: ○ Student illness with parental note of excuse ○ Doctor appointment verified with a doctor’s note ○ Attendance at a funeral

Students who fail to attend the required academic detention will face the following consequences: ○ One absence – Make up the initial academic detention plus one additional detention. ○ Two absences – Make up the initial academic detention plus two additional detentions.

4.15 HONORS PROGRAM Grades 5 through 8 will receive recognition for excellence in academic achievement. The subjects used for honor roll will be religion, memory, English, literature/reading, math, science, social studies, and Spanish. The A and AB Honor Roll will be published each marking period.

A Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be honored at the 8th grade banquet on the basis of grades earned in 6th, 7th, and the first three quarters of the 8th grade. Students achieving at least a 3.5 GPA will also be recognized. A transfer student’s previous grades for the respective years will be included.

4.16 LIBRARY BOOK REPLACEMENT If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, the replacement price will be paid by the student.

4.17 LUNCH Students and teachers eat lunches together in the classrooms during the lunch period. Hot lunch prices are set by the Board of Christian Education and publicized. Lunches include milk and salad bar. Parents deposit money into a hot lunch account, and lunch fees will be drawn from that account. Hot lunch account balances will be online. The menu is published each month in the newsletter.

27 6

We require that you maintain a positive lunch balance. In the past we’ve had too many families allowing their lunch balances to become negative for too long accumulating hundreds of dollars due. We cannot sustain our lunch program without timely payments from our parents.

We will send weekly notifications on Fridays through sycamore with balances to all families as a reminder only. These notifications are sent on a timed schedule, not a balance based schedule. Do not rely on this notification to tell you when your account is close to empty. Please remember that you can view this balance at any time by logging into sycamore. It is your responsibility to maintain your accounts at the proper balances. We will review mid-year and if balances are not being maintained properly we will begin to assessing fees as needed.

Faith Lutheran participates in the State of Michigan Free and Reduced Hot Lunch Program. To fill our a form to see if you qualify please contact the office.

4.18 LOCKERS Students in grades 5 - 8 will be assigned a locker by their homeroom teacher at the beginning of the school year. Lockers are to be kept clean and neat at all times. Students may not change lockers without the teacher’s permission. Appropriate pictures and other items may be posted on the interior of the lockers. Please use magnets to hold items in place. No tape or stickers should be applied. Lockers are the property of Faith Lutheran School and may be opened at any time at the discretion of the staff. Water bottles must be clear tightly sealed containers, and contain water only.

4.19 MEDICATION POLICY Medication must be in the original container with detailed administration directions. Faith will not administer medications to a student unless needed for a medical condition or reaction. Written permission must be on file in the office for medication to be administered. Forms can be found on our website. Parents are urged to schedule the administration of medications at home in order to avoid school hours.

If a child needs an Epipen (injectable) or an inhaler, the child should have this with him/her at all times. Please inform your child’s teacher if these items are needed. Two emergency Epipens are on school grounds at all times but are for emergency use only. They should not replace a personal Epipen for students with a current Epipen prescription.

Middle School students who are learning self-care behaviors may carry on their person simple over the counter medications. We ask parents to discuss with their child the importance of not sharing these medications with other students.

4.20 PARENT EVENT PLANNERS (PEP SQUAD)AND BOOSTERS This organization exists to support the school in the following ways: spiritual and educational growth opportunities, social functions, and fundraising - all of which are critical for the supplementation of items needed outside of the school budget. All parents and teachers are members of the PEP Squad and are encouraged to get involved in sponsored activities and show support for their school.

The Faith Booster Club works with the Athletic Director to cover the cost of our athletic programs. All parents of student athletes are required to volunteer for scheduled events, as determined by the Athletic Director. Please refer to the Athletic Handbook for more information.

4.21 PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND CLOTHING At Faith, clothing should be worn in the manner that glorifies God. Student clothing should not be oversized, tight fitting, see-through, or provocative. Hats and hoods are not to be worn inside the school building. School dress code applies to all school events, whether during the school day, evening, or weekend.

28 6

○ PANTS/SKIRTS: Pants should not be ripped, have holes, be frayed, or distressed in any way. Pants should rest at or slightly below the natural waistline. Shorts, skirts, and dresses are permissible providing the hem is at least fingertip length. (Fingertip length means when arms are at the side naturally, the hem is at or near the length of the longest finger.) Crop, capri, nylon athletic, and wind pants are permissible. Yoga pants and leggings are permissible if worn underneath a skirt, dress, or tunic that meets the appropriate length guidelines. If they do not meet the guidelines, another shirt will be given your child to wear. Flannel pants, pajama pants, lounge pants, athletic sweatpants, or spandex are not allowed unless a special designation is made for dress-up days. Shorts may not be worn between October 31 and March 31st. Between the months of October 31 and March 31st, skirts/dresses may be worn with tights or leggings. If unforeseen warm weather occurs during this time period, the principal may allow otherwise. ○ SHIRTS/TOPS: Shirts/tops cannot have offensive, suggestive, demeaning, violent, racist, sexist, anti-Christian slogans or pictures on them. Alcohol and tobacco ads are not permissible. Shirts with music groups/artists that are contrary to Christian beliefs should be refrained from as well. Tank tops or spaghetti-strapped tops are not to be worn without a shirt that has a sleeve of some form. ○ SHOES: Shoes are to be worn at all times. For health and safety reasons, shoes must be tied or Velcroed to the foot, or sandals must have a heel strap. (NO open-backed shoes.) Clogs, Crocs, flip-flops, and slippers are not permissible footwear. For PE class, the students must wear athletic footwear, again which is tied to the foot. Cleats may not be worn inside. ○ HAIR: Hair and hairstyles should be clean and neat at all times. The style or length of the hair should not interfere with the child’s vision. Hair that displays an extreme style and/or dyed in any unusual manner/color is not permissible. ○ JEWELRY/MAKE-UP: For safety reasons, excessively long or large hoop earrings are not allowed. Boys are not permitted to wear earrings. Body piercing other than ears is not permitted. Permanent tattoos are not permissible. Girls in grades 6–8 will be allowed to wear makeup, but it should be applied modestly and in good taste. Girls will be asked to remove any excess makeup. No make-up is to be worn by girls in kindergarten through grade 5. ○ WINTER OUTDOOR CLOTHING: Kindergarten through grade 5 students go outside for daily recess. Hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants are required during the lunch recess. These must be removed before entering the room. Children who do not have a hat and gloves will not be allowed to participate in outdoor activities. ○ PERSONAL HYGIENE: It is important that each child take care of his or her personal hygiene on a daily basis. If cleanliness is not taking place, it can disrupt the learning in the classroom and will be addressed. ○ CHAPEL DRESS: On chapel days, we encourage the students to dress in a manner that shows respect, honor, and praise for their Lord. If shorts are worn on a chapel day, athletic shorts are to be avoided.

In all matters regarding dress and overall appearance, the school reserves the right to counsel, reprimand, suspend, and/or even dismiss a student if the student does not comply with the school’s dress code. The School Administrator, representing the Board of Christian Education, retains the right to declare clothing unsuitable for school wear. We ask that parents/guardians observe what their child is wearing prior to leaving home in the morning and help us in enforcing this policy.

4.22 REPORTING TO PARENTS Faith Lutheran School employs a threefold method of reporting to parents: 1. Online Grades – The grades of the students may be checked online via our school management software. If you do not have internet at your home, please contact the school office to make arrangements to use a school computer. Teacher email addresses and parent login information for the school management software will be made available at registration. 2. Parent-Teacher Conferences – the scheduled parent-teacher conference is a valuable means of reporting to parents. At the end of the first quarter, 10–15 minute conferences will be scheduled to talk about your child’s progress and methods to aid your child’s learning. Parents are encouraged to attend these conferences as the school partners with you in your child’s academic and faith development. Third quarter parent/teacher conferences are held upon teacher or parent request. 29 6

3. Parent-Teacher Communication – Parents and teachers may schedule a conference at any time. Teachers are always willing to meet the parents to discuss the welfare of the child. Please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting time.

4.23 PHOTO PUBLICATIONS AND USE School pictures are taken in the fall. Student pictures will appear in the yearbook. If you prefer your student not to appear in the yearbook or other Faith Lutheran publications, you must contact the school office to document this preference.

4.24 SUNDAY WORSHIP In keeping with the religious objectives of our school, all parents are encouraged to attend worship services regularly with their children. Church attendance records are kept and reported on the report cards. The example of parents in their commitment to spiritual growth is important in this respect. Faith also provides adult Bible study, classes, and Sunday School. All school families are encouraged to attend, regardless of their church membership status.

4.25 TELEPHONE USAGE The school phone is not to be used by our students unless an emergency occurs and permission is granted by a staff member. Emergency messages from parents should be left at the school office where they will be relayed to the teacher and child. Phones in the classrooms are intended for teacher use only.

4.26 CELL PHONE POLICY Upon entering the building, all cell phones are to be turned off and placed in the student’s backpack during school hours(7:30 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.). This may also include before care and after care. If students fail to honor this policy, the following consequences will be enforced: ○ 1st offense – The cell phone will be taken from the student. The parents will be called and the phone will be given back to the parents after a meeting with them. nd ○ 2 offense – One 45 minute after-school detention along with the consequences listed above. ○ 3rd offense – One day ISS plus the consequences listed above. The student’s cell phone will not be permitted in the student’s possession while at school.

4.27 TESTING PROGRAM In addition to regular subject matter testing, achievement and diagnostic tests are administered annually to all children. Parents are encouraged to look over their child’s results to better understand their child’s academic progress. The school uses these tests to compare student achievement to a national average so that we can improve our educational program. All test results are entered in the child’s school record and are kept private and used only for professional purposes. These records may be shared with special education services personnel from the local public school districts.

4.28 VISITORS TO CLASSROOMS Parents are welcome to visit classrooms. Please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a visit. We encourage parents who are considering sending their child to Faith to visit classrooms. Visitors who are currently enrolled at another school are required to receive permission from the School Administrator and classroom teacher in advance. All visitors must sign-in at the office.

4.29 VOLUNTEER POLICY Our School Community has the great blessing and responsibility to serve our children. We are here to assist our Parents in their sacred call to be the primary educators of their children in our Faith. We can only do this as a shared and collaborative effort, so we ask all of our parents to exercise that “stewardship” to which all are called and share their resources of “time, talent, and treasure”.

30 6

Faith Lutheran School is required to obtain complete criminal background information for all volunteers before they can participate in school activities. All information will be treated as confidential. Forms are available online or our website. Conviction may or may not disqualify you, depending on the nature of the offense.

4.30 INCIDENT REPORTING Parents will be kept informed of all discipline problems at all times. It is the Board of Christian Education’s policy to contact the parents via telephone or email. In case of emergency or physical injury, you will be contacted immediately via the phone number(s) listed as emergency contacts. In the case of a school-wide event, information will be sent via Sycamore Education, and phone calls to emergency contacts will be made by the staff.

4.31 PEANUT AND TREE NUT POLICY Purpose: While we cannot guarantee that Faith Lutheran will be a completely peanut and tree nut , we will do our best to accommodate all students with peanut and tree nut allergies and sensitivities within our capabilities.

Procedure • We will have a "peanut safe" table or desk in each classroom for children with peanut and/or tree nut allergies and/or sensitivities to sit at during lunch or snack time. • The parent of a student with a peanut allergy is to provide the teacher with alternate snacks that can be given to the student with the allergy on the occasion when snacks are given to the class. • There is to be no sharing of food of any kind with students with peanut and/or tree nut allergies and/or sensitivities. • All eating surfaces will be cleaned after lunch with soap and water, sanitized and rinsed thoroughly. • All staff and students who have eaten food with peanuts will wash hands with soap and water or approved 31 6

wipes after lunch and/or snack periods to reduce the risk or potential exposure to peanut and/or tree nut oils in other areas of the school. • All equipment such as balls, toys, and computers used by the student with the allergy will be wiped down by a staff member prior to use. • Refrain from using peanut and/or tree nut products in art/classroom projects. • All staff, including ancillary staff shall have mandatory education on food allergies; peanut and/or tree nut food allergies; avoidance procedures; what a reaction looks like; administration of an Epi-pen. • There are to be 2 Epi-pens in a secure location at the school available for use at all times. In the case of a severe allergy, parents are mandated to provide one Epipen for the student to carry with them or placed in the classroom per agreement between teacher and parent. • Food allergy information will be sent home with all children, regardless of grade to educate all parents on the importance of food allergies and children who have them. • If parents choose to do so, they can have pictures of their child sent home with allergy information to the parents of children in their classroom to make them aware of their child's allergy and share their action plan for the classroom and common areas. • All staff will be given an information sheet including a picture of each child with peanut allergies including the action plan to be taken if a reaction occurs. • Faith Lutheran must have on file for each child with a peanut and/or tree nut allergy and/or sensitivity a signed FARE (Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan) prior to the start of school. This will be kept in the First Aid Cabinet. • This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed if incident occurs.
