Blair B Bryant 9501 Purple Cloud Row Laurel MD 20723 ii ORDER FROM CHAOS The Caractors Transcript How do I know that circled portion is ‘Laman and Nephi’???? Read on. The Caractors Transcript (CT) is a hand-written copy (using a quill pen on old paper) of about 217 characters. The strange characters were copied from the record of a people that were led from the Land of Jerusalem during the reign of King Zedekiah, around 600 BC. About 15 years later, the city of Jerusalem was captured by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and most of the surviving Jews became slaves in Babylon. The Book of Mormon is the record of the Nephites, the people that God led from Jerusalem. The CT message is a summary of the content of the Book of Mormon and was prepared by the last two prophets who completed the record–Mormon and his son, Moroni. The first four lines were written by Mormon in bold characters. The last three were written by Moroni and were in a cramped handwriting, for as Moroni wrote, (Mormon 4:5-6, CofChrist; 8;5, LDS): “My father hath made this record, and he hath written the intent thereof. And behold, I would write it also, if I had room upon the plates, but I have not; and ore I have none, for I am alone; my father hath been slain in battle.” So, Mormon’s ‘intent’ is in the first four lines of the CT. Apparently, Moroni finally decided that he could fit his summary (or ‘intent’) in the small space left by Mormon, if he made his writing small enough. The CT tells us what Mormon and Moroni thought should be in the Book of Mormon and why it should be included. TRUST IN THE SLOW WORK OF GOD iii Note that the characters written by Mormon are different from those written by Moroni. Not only are Moroni’s characters smaller, they are also distinctively different from Mormon’s handwriting. This poem speaks to the sometimes-excruciating experience of waiting on God. Do you find yourself often impatient, struggling to trust that God's ways are higher than your wishes? Take a few minutes to reflect upon the wisdom Chardin shares here. Above all, trust in the slow work of God. We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. Yet it is the law of all progress that is made by passing through some stages of instability and that may take a very long time. And so I think it is with you. Your ideas mature gradually. Let them grow. Let them shape themselves without undue haste. Do not try to force them on as though you could be today what time -- that is to say, grace -- and circumstances -- acting on your own good will -- will make you tomorrow. Only God could say what this new Spirit gradually forming in you will be. Give our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete. Spencer, PhD I am a Latter-Day Saint Christian, and have known Blair Bryant now for at least six years. I am also a PhD in political science and do a lot of work on military related studies. I first heard of Blair Bryant’s work on the “caractors” from a family that I home taught. They recommended this fictional book to me called The Moroni Code by Jack Lyon, so I bought it and read it. In the book a detective foils a plot to undermine the LDS Church and in part cracks the code of the so-called Anthon Transcript to help solve his mystery. The book was not the best I’ve ever read, shamelessly exploited the popularity of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, but was entertaining. However, more interesting was that the code cracking was based on Blair Bryant’s work as explained in an extensive footnote with a link to a website. I subsequently went to the website and found it a bit confusing to follow, so to be able to study it in a more systematic manner, I copied and pasted the entire website into a document, and reorganized the contents into what to me, was a more logical order, then took it with me on a trip. During my free moments, I pored over it with great interest and tried to understand Blair’s work. I found it intriguing. I went back to the website and found a place where Blair requested that anyone that had any insights to please contact him and share them with him. Well, I’m no professional linguist, but I knew a couple of things from my study of foreign languages (I am fluent in Spanish and my job involves teaching adults in that language. I have also studied German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, and Japanese at various times in my life) and have experience from living overseas for much of my life. So, I emailed him my insights. He soon emailed me back and through a series of exchanges I discovered that he lived within 30 minutes of my house. I was a bit surprised--as from my preconceptions of where Community of Christ populations were located-- would have never dreamed that he was living so close. We soon decided to meet. We have continued to meet on occasion since that time. The fact that he is Community of Christ, what LDS people often still refer to as RLDS2, and I am LDS has never caused an awkward moment in our friendship. We share faith in Jesus Christ, a belief in the Book of Mormon and an interest in the so called “Anthon Transcript” or what Blair calls the “Caractors Transcript” or CT. He’s never doubted me for being LDS, and I’ve never doubted the validity of his work because he’s Community of Christ. We have differences of beliefs, but respect our respective differences. I consider him a brother in Christ, and he’s told me as much. What I can absolutely vouch for is Blair’s sincerity and humility, and to his tireless effort to discover the true message of the Anthon Transcript. He’s a very intelligent man but doesn’t regard himself as above anyone else or the possessor of THE ANSWER, or any of the things that characterize the many charlatans out there. What I do sense in him is a deep frustration that so few seem interested in his work.     SCRIPTURAL STUDIES Joseph Smith's Interpretation of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon David P. Wright THE BOOK OF MORMON (hereafter BM), which Joseph Smith published in 1830, is mainly an account of the descendants of an Israelite family who left Jerusalem around 600 B.C.E. to come to the New World. According to the book's story, this family not only kept a record of their history, which, added upon by their descendants, was to become the BM, but also brought with them to the Americas a copy of Isaiah's prophecies, from which the BM prophets cite Isaiah (1 Ne. 5:13; 19:22-23). Several chapters or sections of Isaiah are quoted in the BM: Isaiah 2-14 are cited in 2 Nephi 12-24; Isaiah 48-49 in 1 Nephi 20-21; Isaiah 49:22-52:2 in 2 Nephi 6:6-7,16- 8:25; Isaiah 52:7-10 in Mosiah 12:21-24; Isaiah 53 in Mosiah 14; and Isaiah 54 in 3 Nephi 22. Other shorter citations, paraphrases, and allusions are also found.1 The text of Isaiah in the BM for the most part follows the King James Version (hereafter KJV). There are some variants, but these are often in- significant or of minor note and therefore do not contribute greatly to clarifying the meaning of the text. We keep institutional Lrecords such as sacrament meeting attendance, home and visiting teaching percentages, and priesthood ordinations. Leaders have also encouraged us to keep journals and write personal histories. For example, President Spencer W. Kimball urged, “We renew our appeal for the keeping of individual histories and accounts of sacred experi- ences.” 1 Likewise, the Book of Mormon provides ample evidence of the importance of writing and reading records. From Nephi to Moroni, the prophets of the Book of Mormon viewed the keeping of records as a sacred commandment. It also contains examples of the consequences of not abiding by this commandment. This chapter will demonstrate the importance the Book of Mormon places on record keeping and journal writing, using several examples that demonstrate principles of personal record keeping. Various forms of the word write occur 344 times in the Book of Mormon, compared to 258 in the Old Testament, 214 in the New Testament, and 110 in the Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price. When we expand the search to include words like engrave or plates, which describe specific ways the records were kept, the Book of Mormon emphasis on writing is even more pronounced.2 Furthermore, the Book of Mormon contains several instances in which writers are specifically commanded by God to write (see 1 Nephi 9:5; 19:1; 2 Nephi 33:11; 3 Nephi 16:4; 23:13; 24:1; 26:12; 30:1; Ether 4:1; 4:5; 5:1).

    C. C.001 C., J. E. “Dr. Duncan and the Book of Mormon.” MS 52 (1 September 1890): 552-56. A defense of the Book of Mormon against the criticism of Dr. Duncan in the Islington Gazette of August 18th. Dr. Duncan, evidently a literary critic, concluded that the Book of Mormon was either a clumsy or barefaced forgery or a pious fraud. The author writes that the Book of Mormon makes clear many doctrines that are difcult to understand in the Bible. Also, the history and gospel taught by the Bible and the Book of Mormon are similar because both were inspired of God. [B. D.] C.002 C., M. J. “Mormonism.” Plainsville Telegraph (March 3, 1831): 4. Tells of the conversion of Sidney Rigdon who read the Book of Mormon and “partly condemned it” but after two days accepted it as truthful.     Visitors to Hill Cumorah in Manchester, Ontario County, New York Oliver Cowdery, Associate President of the Church, in Letter Number VII to W.W. Phelps. Page numbers are of the first edition (1830) of the Book of Mormon: I must now give you some description of the place where, and the manner in which these records were deposited. You are acquainted with the mail road from Palmyra, Wayne Co. to Canandaigua, Ontario Co. N. Y. and also, as you pass from the former to the latter place, before arriving at the little village of Manchester, say from three to four, or about four miles from Palmyra, you pass a large hill on the east side of the road. Why I say large, is, because it is as large perhaps, as any in that country. To a person acquainted with this road, a description would be unnecessary, as it is the largest and rises the highest of any on that route. The north end rises quite sudden until it assumes a level with the more southerly extremity, and I think I may say an elevation higher than at the south a short distance, say half or three fourths of a mile. I think I am justified in saying that this is the highest hill for some distance round, and I am certain that its appearance, as it rises so suddenly from a plain on the north, must attract the notice of the traveller as he passes by.

    Martin Harris: The Kirtland Years, 18314870 H. Michael Marquardt MARTIN HARRIS IS KNOWN for being a Book of Mormon scribe, witness, and financier. However, little is known about his activities while living in Kirtland, Ohio, for over thirty-five years. This article will present what is known about Harris during the Kirtland years. Included will be his re- lationship to other Restoration churches under the leadership of James J. Strang (including Harris's mission to England), William E. McLellin, and so forth. A brief background of Harris's life in New York will also be given to help understand his place in the early life of the church. NEW YORK SEEKER Martin Harris was born on 18 May 1783 at Eastown, New York. He was a well-established farmer of Palmyra, Ontario (later Wayne) County, New York. At the age of twenty-six, Harris married his cousin Lucy; he was nine years her senior. They had a family of four known children. He became a close associate of Joseph Smith, Jr., whom he assisted finan- cially, and he acted as a scribe to Smith.1 He also financed the publication of the Book of Mormon by mortgaging his farm. As an early convert of Mormonism, he was received into fellowship by baptism on the day the church was organized. Due to the time and resources spent on his new re- ligion, Harris became partially separated from his wife, Lucy. Orsamus Turner, a printer in New York, described Harris thusly: Martin Harris, was a farmer of Palmyra, the owner of a good farm, and an honest worthy citizen; but especially given to religious enthusiasm, new creeds, the more extravagant the better; a monomaniac, in fact.2 1.

Do the LDS leaders claim their revelatory process is distinct from the spiritual guidance received by a minister in answer to his prayers? Joseph Smith founded his church on April 6, 1830. However, at that time it was called the Church of Christ, not receiving its current name until 1838. On that spring day in 1830 Smith announced that through revelation he had been designated as God’s prophet, seer, translator, revelator, and apostle.2 Today Mormon literature usually shortens those titles to simply “prophet, seer and revelator.” Verse five of that early revelation instructed Smith’s followers to accept his words as if from God’s “own mouth.” Today I want to focus on each of the three designations given to the president of the LDS Church.
