Harvey Builds, the school’s third annual com- munity service day, was a success. It is a day when the entire upper school, including teachers and students, work hard together to help a particular community. In previous years, Harvey has spent time in Yonkers through the program “Habitat for Humanity.”

This year, Harvey students were asked to go to the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, which is a beautiful site for camping, hiking, horseback rid- ing and more. The park has many different animal inhabitants, as well as plant life. Also, it has various landscapes with grass areas and dense forests. With 35 miles of hiking trails, year-round camping and numer- ous picnic sites, there is so much to do there. The already beautiful place was improved upon due to The Harvey School.

The day started with everyone gathering at school, before the entire student body loaded onto The Harvey School buses and took the short five minute drive to the res- Harvey Builds groups removing trees and painting fences as ervation. Are Changes Really For the Better? To the Editor:

Since day one here at Harvey, students have been given the opportunity to retake a test or hand in homework a day late without any major consequences, but not this year. Students, especially upperclassmen, have relied on this system and The have nothing to fall back on this school year. Many members of the student body no longer have the ability to retake a test Pulse Staff below seventy percent or hand in a missed assignment without punishment, all because of the new curriculum changes. As we have all been informed, freshmen have it the best. They can retake a test if they get below a C- to bring their grade up to a C-. The sophomores also have an advantage because the same rules apply, but to a D-. Both ninth and tenth graders have five calendar days to make up late homework. Then it becomes heated with the juniors and seniors; no Marc Catanese retakes at all. The juniors, unlike the seniors, are able to hand in homework within two calendar days of the assignment’s Sarah Chintz due date.

Jovell Forsythe Everyone knows how much stress twelfth graders go through for the first term. So why change the dynamic now? Thomas Gattuso On top of advanced placement classes, filling out applications and supplements for college, standardized testing, and ac- Zach Goligoski cumulations of anxiety, why take away our crutches and expect us to walk a tightrope? Carly Kaplan I do recognize that these changes may be beneficial in the future, especially in college, but with these habits Alfi Liendo already formed, it is jeopardizing our future grades. We can’t do test corrections to learn from our mistakes. Although alumni report back saying they weren’t prepared, that isn’t our problem. That is their problem; they didn’t use the resources Seth Lyons offered to them here at Harvey. They took advantage of what they had and with that, we are facing the consequences. As Paul Nachtwey senior Arianna Pilla said, “I’m not a fan,” and she speaks for most of the student body.

Adam Penino Although some teachers may find the new changes in the curriculum easier, there is a catch. If a student misses Andrew Scherl a homework assignment, the teacher has to email home. I find that completely unnecessary. As high school students, it is Javen Stepp-Davis our duty to take responsibility for our actions, especially since we are attending a college preparatory school. Our parents shouldn’t have to be notified by a situation affecting us, when we will be on our own in a matter of years or even months. Selma Tabakovic This school year is shaped by what we have done and not what we can do. The right to retake a test is no longer even a right but a slight memory, and the ability to negotiate a due date for an assignment in our time of need is gone, not even an option. The student body’s grade point averages, especially those of juniors and seniors, are now threatened. Faculty Advisors Are these changes in the curriculum truly going to improve and benefit Harvey students? Lesley Boltz Virginia Holmes-Dwyer

Chair of the Board of Trustees Eileen Walker said, “The board recognizes the irreplaceable value of Barry’s experience and skill.” Therefore, Mr. Fenster- macher will become the first Headmaster Emeritus. This new title means that he will still be involved with the school, due to the fact that he wants to see it prosper even after his retirement.

Since 1986, enrollment at Harvey has nearly doubled, from 170 to 360 students. Thanks to Mr. Fenstermacher’s hard work, college placements have been strong. Many construction projects, which include renovating the rink, building a middle school addition, the McMahon Cottage, the new perform- ing arts center, and the athletic center, have all been 2014-2015 Pulse Staff made possible because of Mr. Fenstermacher. His services at Harvey are greatly appreciated, and without his contributions to the community, Harvey would never be the same.

The Pulse anticipates an interview with the amazing Headmaster Barry Fenstermacher in our next issue. In the meantime, the Harvey community can only live in the present and enjoy Mr. Fensterm- acher’s time before he retires.
