EXPLANATION OF CONTEST PROCEDURE

Before the contest begins, all contestants will be seated in a section behind the contest area. Each team will a place at a table on the contest floor identifiable by name of town and team letter. There will be a proctor sitting by each team. Proctors will not check answers for students from his/her school. Proctors will be seated before the contest begins.

When the announcer asks for first team members to be seated, the members with 100-90 averages will go to their respective desks. Answer sheets will be on the desks. Questions will be on the screen and read aloud. After reading the question and all answer choices, 15 seconds will be given to think and circle either a, b, c, or d. No scratch paper, notes, or device may be used to answer the questions. The correct answer will then be revealed on screen and announced. When a question is answered correctly, the proctor will put a red check mark to the right of it, one point is added to the team score, and the counter display cards will be advanced one unit.

After five questions are answered by the first team members, second team members (average 89- 80) will be seated and answer five questions. Then third team members (79-70) will be seated and answer five questions. This will conclude round one. There will be four rounds. The rounds will contain questions in the following order:

Round 1 - English, math, science, social studies, English Round 2 - English, math, science, social studies, math Round 3 - English, math, science, social studies, science Round 4 - English, math, science, social studies, social studies

In case of a tie or ties, the round or rounds will contain questions at the discretion of the Academic Challenge organization.

Protest Procedure

Protests will be handled by judges from the specific disciplines. If judges agree with the protest, a replacement question from the same level and discipline will be substituted during that round. Coaches/proctors/students will hold up a protest card at the end of the question to notify the contest director of a pending protest. Protests must be made before students from that level leave the competition floor. After students leave the competition floor, no protests will be allowed from that round.

RULES FOR TACS ACADEMIC CHALLENGE

1. Any school in Texas that is an institutional member of the Texas Association of Community Schools may enter and compete in the TACS ACADEMIC CHALLENGE.

2. A team must be composed of one "A" student (90-100), one "B" student (80-89), and one "C" student (70-79). Only the subjects of English, mathematics, science, and social studies will be averaged to arrive at the above grade ranges. Students enrolled in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are eligible to compete. Please round up averages (Example: 89.5 would be an “A”). Averages must be taken from transcripts using the CUMULATIVE averages from the end of the previous year in high school. 9th grade competitors will use their 1st semester grades to determine their ranking. When making a substitution on the State Level, schools must use an “Alternate” before using a member from a team that did not advance.

3. Transcripts of all team members plus alternates will be sent in with the entry fees and entry forms two weeks prior to the contest. Transcripts will be verified by the host school before the contest.

4. The State Director will send questions to the Host School. Representatives from the host School will bring the questions to the contest, ask the questions, and have final say as to accuracy.

5. Each school entered must provide a proctor for the contest. Proctors are assigned teams other than those from their respective schools.

6. Expenses: In addition to any expenses actually incurred in conducting the Area Contest, $500 from each Area Contest must be sent to the State Academic Challenge organization to be used for scholarships in the State Contest. The balance of the entry fees and any sponsorship donations should be used for student scholarship prizes.

7. Entry fee checks ($500 per team) should be made out to the Host School and sent to the school prior to the entry deadline for the Area Contest. Entry fee checks for the State Contest should be made out to Academic Challenge and sent to 902 E. Ivy, Muleshoe, Texas, 79347 prior to the entry deadline.

8. 9. The winning schools must provide the contest director with an "update" of the winners at the end of the following year. Schools should send the students’ names, date graduated from high school, and when and where they enrolled in higher education institution.
