I was visiting the California Institute of Technology on my sabbatical. Somehow during this visit I learned that one year ago Wim Luxemburg had given a lecture on A. Robinson's theory of infinitesimals and infinitely large numbers. Luxemburg was on leave but I got hold of his Lecture Notes [Lux62]. Although the topic was somewhat distant from my own work I got interested and, after thorough reading I wished to meet the person who had been able to put Leibniz' infinitesimals on a solid base and build the modern analysis upon it. At that time Abraham Robinson was at the nearby University of Cali- fornia at Los Angeles, and I managed to meet him there. I remember an instructive discussion about his theory which opened my eyes for the wide range of possible applications; he also showed me his motivations and main ideas about it. Abraham Robinson 1918-74 Perhaps I am allowed to insert some personal words explaining why I had been so excited about the new theory of infintesimals. This goes back to my school days in K¨onigsberg, when I was 16. At that time the school syllabus required that we were to be instructed in Calculus or, as it was called in German, in Diffentialrechnung. Our Math teacher at that time was an elderly lady who had been retired already but was reactivated again for 2 school work in order to fill the vacancy of our regular teacher; the latter had been drafted to the army. (It was war time: 1944.) I still remember the sight of her standing in front of the blackboard where she had drawn a ∆y wonderfully smooth parabola, inserting a secant and telling us that ∆x is its dy slope, until finally she convinced us that the slope of the tangent is dx where dx is infinitesimally small and dy accordingly. My school in K¨onigsberg1 This, I admit, impressed me deeply. Until then our school Math had con- sisted largely of Euclidean geometry, with so many problems of constructing triangles from some given data. This was o.k. but in the long run that stuff did not strike me as to be more than boring exercises. But now, with those infinitesimals, Math seemed to have more interesting things in stock than I had met so far. And I decided that I would study Mathematics if I survived the dangers of war which we knew we would be exposed to very soon. After all, I wanted to find out more about these wonderfully strange infinitesimals. Well, I survived. And I managed to enter University and start with Mathematics. The first lecture I attended to was Calculus, with Professor Otto Haupt in Erlangen. There we were told to my disappointment that my Math teacher had not been up to date after all. We were warned to 1Wilhelmsgymasium. This is the same school where Hilbert in the year 1880 obtained his Abitur. 3 beware of infinitesimals since they do not exist, and in any case they lead dy to contradictions. Instead, although one writes dx then this does not really mean a quotient of two entities, but it should be interpreted as a symbolic ∆y notation only, namely the limit of the quotients ∆x . I survived this disappointment too. Later I learned that dy and dx can be interpreted, not as infinitesimals but as some entities of an abstract con- struction called differential module, and if that module is one-dimensional dy then the quotient dx would make sense and yield what we had learned any- how. Certainly, this sounded nice but in fact it was only an abstract frame ignoring the natural idea of infinitesimally small numbers. So when I learned about Robinson's infinitesimals, my early school day experiences came to my mind again and I wondered whether that lady teacher had not been so wrong after all. The discussion with Abraham Robinson kindled my interest and I wished to know more about it. Some time later there arose the opportunity to invite him to visit us in Germany where he gave lectures on his ideas, first in T¨ubingenand later in Heidelberg, after I had moved there. Before continuing with this let me briefly explain what I am talking about, i.e., Robinson's theory of nonstandard analysis. 2 What is Nonstandard Analysis? 2.1 A preliminary Axiom Consider the hierarchy of numbers which we present to our students in their first year: N ⊂ Z ⊂ Q ⊂ R Everything starts with the natural numbers N which, as Kronecker allegedly has maintained, are \created by God" (or whatever is considered to be equiv- alent to Him). The rest is constructed by mankind, i.e., by the minds of mathematicians. In each step, the structure in question is enlarged such as to admit greater flexibility with respect to some operations defined in the structure. In Z the operation of subtraction is defined such that Z becomes an additive group; in fact Z is a commutative ring without zero divisors. In Q the operation of division is defined such that Q becomes a field. Finally, in R every Cauchy sequence is convergent, such that R becomes a complete or- dered field. In each step we tell our students that the respective enlargement exists and we explain how to construct it. 4 In order to develop what nowadays is called \analysis" the construction usually stops with the real field R; this is considered to be adequate and quite sufficient as a basis for (real) analysis. But it had not always been the case that way. Since Leibniz had used the natural idea of infinitesimals to build a systematic theory with it, many generations of mathematicians (including my lady teacher) had been taught in the Leibniz way. Prominent people like Euler, the Bernoullis, Lagrange and even Cauchy (to name only a few) did not hesitate to use them. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz The Leibniz idea for analysis, as interpreted by Robinson, is to work in a further enlargement: ∗ R ⊂ R such that the following Axiom is satisfied. In order to explain the main idea I will first state the Axiom in a preliminary form which, however, will not yet be sufficient. Later I will give the final, more general form. Axiom (preliminary form). (1.) ∗R is an ordered field extension of R. (2.) ∗R contains infinitely large elements. An element ! 2 ∗R is called “infinitely large" if j!j > n for all n 2 N. Part (2.) says that the ordering of ∗R does not satisfy the axiom of Archimedes. 5 Fields with the properties (1.) and (2.) were known for some time2 but the attempts to build analysis on this basis were not quite satisfactory. Among all such fields one has to select those which in addition have more sophisticated properties. But for the moment let us stay with the Axiom in this preliminary form and see what we can do with it. The elements of R are called standard real numbers, while the elements of ∗R not in R are nonstandard. This terminology is taken from model theory but I find it not very suggestive in the present context. Sometimes the elements of ∗R are called hyperreal numbers. Perhaps someone some time will find a more intuitive terminology. The finite elements α in ∗R are those which are not infinitely large, i.e. which satisfy Archimedes' axiom: jαj < n for some n 2 N (depending on α). These finite elements form a subring E ⊂ ∗R. It contains all infinitesimal 1 elements " which are defined by the property that j"j < n for all n 2 N. It follows from the definition that the set of infinitesimals is an ideal I ⊂ E. We have: ! infinitely large () !−1 infinitesimal 6= 0: It is well known that this property characterizes E as a valuation ring in the sense of Krull [Kru32]. Theorem: The finite elements E form a valuation ring of ∗R with the infinitesimals I as its maximal ideal. The residue class field E=I = R. Two finite elements α; β are said to be infinitely close to each other if α − β is infinitesimal, i.e., if they belong to the same residue class modulo the ideal I of infinitesimals. This is written as α ≈ β : The residue class of α 2 E is called the \monad" of α; this terminology has been introduced by Robinson in reference to Leibniz' theory of monads. Every monad contains exactly one standard number a 2 R; this is called the standard part of α, and denoted by st(α). There results the standard part map st : E ! R which in fact is nothing else than the residue class map of E modulo its maximal ideal I. 2See, e.g., [AS27]. 6 In this situation let us consider the example of a parabola y = x2 which, as I have narrated above, had been used by my school teacher to introduce us to analysis.

    AN INTRODUCTION TO NONSTANDARD ANALYSIS ISAAC DAVIS Abstract. In this paper we give an introduction to nonstandard analysis, starting with an ultrapower construction of the hyperreals. We then demon- strate how theorems in standard analysis \transfer over" to nonstandard anal- ysis, and how theorems in standard analysis can be proven using theorems in nonstandard analysis. 1. Introduction For many centuries, early mathematicians and physicists would solve problems by considering infinitesimally small pieces of a shape, or movement along a path by an infinitesimal amount. Archimedes derived the formula for the area of a circle by thinking of a circle as a polygon with infinitely many infinitesimal sides [1]. In particular, the construction of calculus was first motivated by this intuitive notion of infinitesimal change. G.W. Leibniz's derivation of calculus made extensive use of “infinitesimal” numbers, which were both nonzero but small enough to add to any real number without changing it noticeably. Although intuitively clear, infinitesi- mals were ultimately rejected as mathematically unsound, and were replaced with the common -δ method of computing limits and derivatives. However, in 1960 Abraham Robinson developed nonstandard analysis, in which the reals are rigor- ously extended to include infinitesimal numbers and infinite numbers; this new extended field is called the field of hyperreal numbers. The goal was to create a system of analysis that was more intuitively appealing than standard analysis but without losing any of the rigor of standard analysis. In this paper, we will explore the construction and various uses of nonstandard analysis. In section 2 we will introduce the notion of an ultrafilter, which will allow us to do a typical ultrapower construction of the hyperreal numbers.

Katz · Thomas Mormann © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2012 Abstract We examine some of Connes’ criticisms of Robinson’s infinitesimals starting in 1995. Connes sought to exploit the Solovay model S as ammunition against non-standard analysis, but the model tends to boomerang, undercutting Connes’ own earlier work in func- tional analysis. Connes described the hyperreals as both a “virtual theory” and a “chimera”, yet acknowledged that his argument relies on the transfer principle. We analyze Connes’ “dart-throwing” thought experiment, but reach an opposite conclusion. In S, all definable sets of reals are Lebesgue measurable, suggesting that Connes views a theory as being “vir- tual” if it is not definable in a suitable model of ZFC. If so, Connes’ claim that a theory of the hyperreals is “virtual” is refuted by the existence of a definable model of the hyperreal field due to Kanovei and Shelah. Free ultrafilters aren’t definable, yet Connes exploited such ultrafilters both in his own earlier work on the classification of factors in the 1970s and 80s, and in Noncommutative Geometry, raising the question whether the latter may not be vulnera- ble to Connes’ criticism of virtuality. We analyze the philosophical underpinnings of Connes’ argument based on Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, and detect an apparent circularity in Connes’ logic. Abraham Robinson died in New Haven on April 11, 1974, some six months after the diagnosis of an incurable cancer of the pancreas. In the fall of 1973 he was vigorously and enthusiastically involved at Yale in joint work with Peter Roquette on a new model-theoretic approach to diophantine problems. He finished a draft of this in November, shortly before he underwent surgery. He spoke of his satisfaction in having finished this work, and he bore with unforgettable dignity the loss of his strength and the fading of his bright plans. He was supported until the end by Reneé Robinson, who had shared with him since 1944 a life given to science and art. There is common consent that Robinson was one of the greatest of mathematical logicians, and Gödel has stressed that Robinson more than any other brought logic closer to mathematics as traditionally understood. His early work on metamathematics of algebra undoubtedly guided Ax and Kochen to the solution of the Artin Conjecture. One can reasonably hope that his memory will be further honored by future applications of his penetrating ideas. Robinson was a gentleman, unfailingly courteous, with inexhaustible enthu­ siasm. He took modest pleasure in his many honors. He was much respected for his willingness to listen, and for the sincerity of his advice. As far as I know, nothing in mathematics was alien to him. Certainly his work in logic reveals an amazing store of general mathematical knowledge.

    Exploring Euler’s Foundations of Differential Calculus in Isabelle/HOL using Nonstandard Analysis Jessika Rockel I V N E R U S E I T H Y T O H F G E R D I N B U Master of Science Computer Science School of Informatics University of Edinburgh 2019 Abstract When Euler wrote his ‘Foundations of Differential Calculus’ [5], he did so without a concept of limits or a fixed notion of what constitutes a proof. Yet many of his results still hold up today, and he is often revered for his skillful handling of these matters despite the lack of a rigorous formal framework. Nowadays we not only have a stricter notion of proofs but we also have computer tools that can assist in formal proof development: Interactive theorem provers help users construct formal proofs interactively by verifying individual proof steps and pro- viding automation tools to help find the right rules to prove a given step. In this project we examine the section of Euler’s ‘Foundations of Differential Cal- culus’ dealing with the differentiation of logarithms [5, pp. 100-104]. We retrace his arguments in the interactive theorem prover Isabelle to verify his lines of argument and his conclusions and try to gain some insight into how he came up with them. We are mostly able to follow his general line of reasoning, and we identify a num- ber of hidden assumptions and skipped steps in his proofs. In one case where we cannot reproduce his proof directly we can still validate his conclusions, providing a proof that only uses methods that were available to Euler at the time.

An infinitesimal is a number whose magnitude ex- ceeds zero but somehow fails to exceed any finite, positive num- ber. Although logically problematic, infinitesimals are extremely appealing for investigating continuous phenomena. They were used extensively by mathematicians until the late 19th century, at which point they were purged because they lacked a rigorous founda- tion. In 1960, the logician Abraham Robinson revived them by constructing a number system, the hyperreals, which contains in- finitesimals and infinitely large quantities. This thesis introduces Nonstandard Analysis (NSA), the set of techniques which Robinson invented. It contains a rigorous de- velopment of the hyperreals and shows how they can be used to prove the fundamental theorems of real analysis in a direct, natural way. (Incredibly, a great deal of the presentation echoes the work of Leibniz, which was performed in the 17th century.) NSA has also extended mathematics in directions which exceed the scope of this thesis. These investigations may eventually result in fruitful discoveries. Following an early career as a journalist and with growing Zionist sympathies, Robinsohn accepted a position in 1912 as secretary to David Wolfson, former president and a lead- ing figure of the World Zionist Organization. When Wolfson died in 1915, Robinsohn became responsible for both the Herzl and Wolfson archives. He also had become increas- ingly involved with the affairs of the Jewish National Fund. In 1916 he married Hedwig Charlotte (Lotte) Bähr (1888- 1949), daughter of a Jewish teacher and herself a teacher. 1Born Abraham Robinsohn, he later changed the spelling of his name to Robinson shortly after his arrival in London at the beginning of World War II.   • A Historical Account of the Search for Ideal Numbers
    A HISTORICAL ACCCOUNT OF THE SEARCH FOR IDEAL NUMBERS IRFAN ALAM Abstract. Focusing on the development of nonstandard analysis, this paper attempts to better understand how knowledge is generated through new mathematical concepts. The first part of this paper deals with a history of real and complex numbers, as well as in- finitesimals and non-standard numbers. A comparison is drawn between the acceptance, among the working mathematicians, of irrationals and imaginary numbers on one hand and the acceptance of nonstandard numbers, such as the infinitesimals, on the other hand. It is argued that a geometric interpretation is not always necessary to arrive at necessarily correct results and that a notion like that of an infinitesimal could have a strong epistemic worth without having a respectable ontological status from the point of view of representing geometric objects. \Mathematics is the art of giving the same name to different things." -Henri Poincar´e 1. Introduction A lot of modern mathematics has to do with identifying equivalences between structures. We are now able to prove everything in Euclidean geometry using the algebra of ordered pairs of numbers. Indeed, we now know that all the geometric information about figures in the plane can be encoded using algebraic relations between certain quantities, after iden- tifying the two-dimensional plane with a Cartesian coordinate system. Conversely, we can get a lot of information about algebraic equations by looking at the geometric properties of relevant curves representing those equations, which is the essence of the modern area of Algebraic Geometry. This dichotomy between algebra and geometry has also helped in legitimizing formerly taboo practices of working with numbers that are so unreal that we call them imaginary.

It also stands to reason that this sort of thinking can be applied even further. One such example is the Hyperreals (denoted by ∗R). The Hyperreals is the Reals augmented by the infinitesimals. Numbers in the Hyperreal set have a \standard" Real part and an infinitesimal part (comparable to how Complex numbers have a Real and Complex part). When Newton and Leibniz both developed calculus they did so using infinitesimals (Newton called them “fluxions”) rather than limits. Unfortunately, there was a lot of trouble with these mystical quantities which were sometimes nonzero and sometimes treated as zero. Because improper use led to contradictions (although no one could say what use was proper), eventually the foundations of calculus were replaced with limits. Infinitesimals were mostly discarded from mathematics, aside from a few failed proofs of their existence, until Abraham Robinson published Non-Standard Analysis in 1966, where 1 he formalized the Hyperreals, and proved that these were a consistent extension of the real numbers.
