Join us in celebrating your fellow OATA ATs involved in the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games!!
The countdown to Toronto’s hosting of the PanAm Parapan Games has been underway for some time. The gates open July 10 at the Pan Am Ceremonies Venue (Rogers Centre) at 5:00 p.m. For athletes, the training began many months ago. Recruitment of the medical team volunteers began two years ago. Of the 23,000 volunteers, 1,750 will provide comprehensive medical care, including on-field emergency treatment, to athletes, coaches and officials. The medical teams have to be at the ready to help prevent and treat the injuries that can hamper performance. First on the scene of any injury is likely to be a certified Athletic Therapist.
DID YOU KNOW? HEAD, ANKLE, KNEES AND MUSCLES
HEAD FIRST: The most frequently injured body part during most major games (Olympics, PanAm, Commonwealth, etc.) is the head. Athletic Therapists are concussion and mild traumatic injury specialists.
SECOND HURT: The second most frequently injured body part is the ankle.
THIRD PAIN POINT: The third most frequently injured body part, during most major games, are the knees.
PERFORMANCE BARRIERS: Almost half of reported injuries are diagnosed as contusions, sprains, strains and muscle fibre ruptures.
SIDELINED CULPRITS: Injuries that can sideline athletes include fractures, dislocations, concussions and lesions of the meniscus.
