After 10 highly successful years with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, our Director of Artistic Planning, Ronan Tighe, is now making plans to move on to new projects. While we will be sorry to part ways, we are delighted with the legacy he leaves behind. The APO is currently performing at a very high level presenting a highly regarded programme of concert activity to packed houses across the season and working with some of the finest performing artists in the world. Led by Music Director Giordano Bellincampi, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is New Zealand’s full-time professional Metropolitan orchestra, serving the country’s largest and most vibrant city with a comprehensive programme of concerts and education and outreach activities.

In more than 70 performances annually, the APO presents a full season of symphonic work showcasing many of the world’s finest classical musicians.

Renowned for its innovation, passion and versatility, the APO collaborates with some of New Zealand’s most inventive artists. Through its numerous APO Connecting (education, outreach and community) initiatives the APO offers opportunities to more than 20,000 young people and adults nationwide to participate in music.

More than 250,000 people hear the orchestra live each year, with many thousands more reached through special events, recordings and other media.

Purpose of Role The Director of Artistic Planning is a member of Auckland Philharmonia’s senior management team with responsibility for developing, leading and executing the APO multi-year artistic strategies in collaboration with Music Director and CEO. This includes planning and implementing a season of orchestral concerts and events that serves diverse audience segments and maintains the APO’s position as an artistically vibrant modern symphony orchestra.

Key Responsibilities: Implementation of Artistic vision and strategy • Lead and implement the APO’s concert season to support the APO Strategic Plan, the Artistic Strategy and the Music Director’s artistic vision. This includes subscription concert planning, celebrations/festivals, collaborations, and other events. • Oversee all APO Commercial and recital programming and pre-concert talks • Oversee all APO Connecting programming • Proactively identify and facilitate new opportunities for performances by the Orchestra and its ensembles • Work closely with the Music Director on all artistic and scheduling matters and be his primary point of contact at the APO • Attend appropriate stages of concert/event production to ensure consistency with artistic vision • Work with senior management team, including Marketing, Business Development, Fundraising and Connecting to deliver market-appropriate offerings • Attend and chair regular Section Leader Committee meetings to review recent activity, discuss future plans and other artistic concerns • Represent artistic and programming perspectives to staff, board, donors and media as required.

Planning • Continually research and identify top-level artists, conductors, composers, programme concepts and other ideas to keep APO programming artistically fresh, innovative and aligned with the strategic vision of the organisation • Select, engage and contract all artists appearing with the APO in line with APO strategies. • Negotiate of all artists’ tours, fees, terms and conditions through to contract in line with approved budgets. • Oversee the organisation of all travel, accommodation and other arrangements for artists including visa arrangements for international guests and where possible collaborate with other arts companies to maximise efficiencies • Maintain up to date knowledge about international and New Zealand artists, contemporary repertoire and musical trends that may be compatible with the artistic vision of the APO.

People/Relationship Management • Supervise the annually appointed Assistant Conductor in Residence, including schedule planning across the other New Zealand involved in the scheme, mentoring, and identifying performance and assisting opportunities for them • Manage, mentor and develop Artistic Department staff, facilitating overall success of the department • Manage and maintain proactive and constructive relationships with the Music Director, guest artists, concertmaster and orchestra musicians • Maintaining proactive, positive and constructive relations with APO’s industry partners, including other arts companies and orchestras in New Zealand and Australia. Where appropriate, this includes coordinating artistic planning to avoid repertoire and artist clashes or to share costs and resource, when appropriate and mutually beneficial. • Liaise with marketing team to ensure appropriate publicity is generated about the artistic programme and artists • Liaise with operations team to optimise the scheduling of orchestral activity across the concert season. Business Management • Establish and manage departmental budgets in consultation with CEO and Director of Business Services • Negotiate artists’ fees and other expenses within budget • As a member of the Senior Management team, participate in the development and implementation of Company strategies, policies, procedures and systems • Provide timely, accurate and relevant reports to other Heads of Department to support funding applications and reporting to funders • Provide timely, accurate and relevant reports to the CEO and the APO Board as required • Lead in recruitment and / or renewal of Music Director and / or Assistant Conductor in Residence, as required.

Public Relations • Promote the profile of the APO within New Zealand and overseas. • Serve as guest speaker / APO representative at various functions as required.

Selection Criteria: Essential • Previous experience in planning orchestral programmes at professional level • An excellent network of contacts across the international industry, in particular the major artist agents • A comprehensive knowledge of conductors and soloists internationally with a view to their suitability to perform with the APO • Extensive knowledge of orchestral and chamber music • Intrinsic understanding of orchestral and recital programming, specifically how it impacts artistic vibrancy and box office performance • An ambitious and tenacious approach to securing the finest guest artists to perform with the APO • A collaborative approach to working, including understanding and accommodating the concerns of Marketing and Box Office, Fundraising and Sponsorship, while maintaining artistic excellence • Sound knowledge and understanding of the orchestra environment • Understanding of and/or willingness to learn about the unique NZ cultural and artistic environment • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written • Management experience, including excellent people management skills • Experience in negotiating and achieving mutually beneficial outcomes, including financial outcomes • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours and to travel as and when required • Relevant tertiary qualification

Barbara Glaser Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Barbara has been the Chief Executive of the APO since 2006. She has previously held senior management positions with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She works with the APO Board and senior management team to provide strategic direction to the APO.

Stuart Angel Deputy Chief Executive, Director of Business Partnerships and Marketing In addition to his position as Deputy Chief Executive, Stuart oversees APO’s Business Partnerships, including corporate sponsorships and hospitality. He is also responsible for the organisation’s marketing strategy.

Heather Wallace Director of Business Services Heather manages the support functions of the orchestra, including Finance, Administration, HR, Legal, and IT. She also prepares the APO’s annual budgets and oversees reporting obligations.

Vacancy Director of Artistic Planning The Director of Artistic Planning is responsible for the overall artistic strategy of the APO. This position oversees the programming of all our concerts, including musical repertoire, and engaging our guest artists and conductors. The Director of Artistic Planning is also involved in the attraction, retention and development of musicians within the orchestra, and oversees the Music Library and includes other areas of the organisation.

Susan Wall Director of Development Susan manages the fundraising strategy and our relationships with APO’s funders and donors, including Trusts and Foundations, and philanthropic individuals. She also oversees the relationships with some of APO’s strategic funders, including Foundation North, and Four Winds Foundation.

Thomas Hamill Director of APO Connecting Thomas is responsible for the development, delivery and evaluation of APO’s education, community and outreach programmes. He maintains relationships with a range of stakeholders and partners including the University of Auckland School of Music, SOUNZ and CANZ.

Paul Christ Director of Operations Paul is responsible for planning and overseeing the production of APO concerts and events, including venue operation and contracts. He manages all relationships with venue providers and external commercial presenters and promoters. Paul is also the secretary of APO’s Health and Safety Committee. ORGANISATIONAL CHART

BUS. DIGITAL& PARTNERSHIPS& MARKETING MARKETING COORDINATOR EXECUTIVE MAESTRO GIORDANO BELLINCAMPI Giordano Bellincampi is the Music Director of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Born in Italy and moving to at a young age, he began his career as a trombonist with the before making his professional conducting debut in 1994.

Previously, he was the Principal Conductor of I Pomeriggi Musicali, Milan, Chief Conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra from 2013-2018, General Music Director of the Duisburg Philharmonic from 2012-2017, General Music Director of the Danish National Opera, from 2005- 2013, Music Director of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra from 2000-2006 and, between 1997-2000 he was also Chief Conductor of the Athelas Copenhagen, the leading contemporary ensemble in Denmark. With an enormous repertoire embracing classical, romantic and contemporary music, he is particularly celebrated for his prowess in the Central European, Italian and Scandinavian symphonic traditions, and for his interpretations of significant choral and vocal works. Highlights of recent seasons have included concert performances of Verdi’s and Puccini’s Lescaut with the Auckland Philharmonia, and gala performances of Wagner’s operatic and orchestral music with the Duisburg Philharmonic to mark the reopening of the orchestra’s home in Duisburg’s Mercatorhalle, as well as a strongly acclaimed visit to Amsterdam’s legendary Concertgebouw Hall, in repertoire by Nielsen, Sibelius and Beethoven.

In the 2018/19 season, Giordano Bellincampi makes appearances alongside the Orchestra della Toscana, Estonian National Symphony, Victoria Symphony, and Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, as well as returning to Toledo Symphony, and bringing a concert performance of Mozart’s to Auckland Philharmonia. Maestro Bellincampi will also continue his educational work, conducting New Zealand’s prestigious Michael Hill Violin Competition and the New Zealand Aria singing contest, and working alongside the young players of the Australian Youth Orchestra at the National Music Camp.

As Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Academy, Giordano Bellincampi is dedicated to the work of educating coming generations of orchestra musicians and conductors, and he also regularly gives masterclasses and serves as a jury member for a number of international conducting competitions. In 2010 he was created a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, an award bestowed by the Danish Royal Family for services to Danish culture, and he also holds the title of Cavaliere from the President of Italy for his international promotion of Italian music.
