2015 Government Guide
Dear Friends,
It is a pleasure to present my 2015 District Guide to Elected Officials. I hope you will take the opportunity to contact me and others with your views and concerns. This booklet will help you keep in touch with local officials as well as those in Washington, D.C.
In 2013 and 2014, I fought for a “no new taxes budget” and won. That new state budget put more than $1 billion into early learning and K-12 schools without requiring general tax increases. It also froze tuition increases at state universities for the first time since 1986.
Controlling taxes will once again be one of my priorities in 2015. In our district, 73% of us supported Initiative 1185 (2012 ballot) which required a 2/3rds- vote by the Legislature to raise taxes. However, the state Supreme Court overturned this important taxpayer protection. I propose reinstating the 2/3rds- vote rule as part of the state constitution, and will lead this effort as chair of the Senate Governmental Operations Committee.
