    Foxhunting and the landscape between 1700 and 1900; with particular reference to Norfolk and Shropshire Jane Bevan Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of History October 2011 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on the condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived from it, may be published without acknowledgement Abstract This thesis explores the history of foxhunting from 1700 to 1900. It examines how perceptions of an ideal hunting country, and what constituted an elite quarry, altered in tandem with alterations to the English lowland countryside. The relationship between the landscape and changes bought about by the upheaval of enclosure and agricultural development are discussed, in the context of the evolution in practice and geographical spread of foxhunting, at a national, regional and county-wide level. Several long-held beliefs are challenged. The social history of foxhunting and the increased participation of both ‘polite’ urban neophytes and prosperous tenant farmers during the two centuries is compared with the declining involvement of women. The impact of hunt clubs and the rise of subscription packs in the two study areas is contrasted. The influence of changes in the landscape on foxhunting is considered alongside the reciprocal impact of foxhunters manipulating the physical surroundings to enhance their sport. A detailed study of the history of hunting and its most iconic feature, the covert, in Norfolk and Shropshire highlights the importance of landowners control over the countryside.

(Econ.), Ph.D. I TRACING the pedigree of an ordinary yeoman family, and more people now alive in England are descended from the yeomen than from any other class, is one of the most fascinating pursuits conceivable. The old motives which led people to enquire into the past history of their families, and to trace their descent, are mostly gone: the desire to acquire a better descent than one really had, to go back to some noble ancestor of the same name; or the desire "to attach new names to old acres" as it has been so aptly described. Both these motives led searcrcers, or those who were employed by them, to make unjustifiable assumptions at critical points in the descent, to guess where one could not know, and (at the worst, though this was rare) to invent new data or to distort e:,,,.isting facts in order to establish a distinguished but false pedigree. But all this pretentious activity has disappeared, or nearly so, and has been replaced by a pure interest in the origin of one's family whatever it may have been. Page 2 of 31 Introduction The Melton Round is our second attempt at a long distance footpath. Our first, The Uppingham Round, can be found as a downloadable PDF, to include full directions and photographs, on Rutland County Council’s website. (Use the search box on the front page). Our methods here are similar; essentially we’ve tried to map a visually interesting and culturally rewarding circular walk which anyone of reasonable fitness may enjoy, in whole or part. With the latter in mind, the Round is divided into easily negotiable sections. It can be entered and left at any point: our starting section was quite arbitrary. The Melton Round represents many years of exploring this area of the country. It’s a landscape we’ve grown to love, and we are indebted to existing long distance and shorter footpaths, byways, green lanes and other walkable tracks which precede us. Indeed, it was our experience of The Leicestershire Round, The Rutland Round, the Jurassic Way, the central section of the Midshires Way, and the Jubilee Way (to mention just four recognized routes) which made The Melton Round possible. While the English landscape can be easily accessed by car (a necessary environmental evil, until vehicles become carbon neutral) nothing can replace walking through the countryside for a close up of its manifold identities, seen at a pace more in keeping with the absorption of scale and detail.
