My sincere thanks also go to my family for supporting me spiritually throughout writing this thesis. 3 Introduction Iris Murdoch, a world-famous prolific novelist and an increasingly influential moral philosopher, was one of the most intriguing figures in the intellectual landscape of post-war Europe. Her unique oeuvre which combines philosophical inclinations with a passion for literature continues to spur interest in her works and ideas. Acclaimed by literary critics, who have praised her insightfulness and wit, Murdoch managed to mark her presence in the consciousness of her contemporaries and almost two decades after her death she continues to resonate strongly with new generations of readers. Murdoch’s exceptional intellectual constitution displayed in her fiction is grounded in her excellent education. Born in 1919 in Dublin, in her early childhood Murdoch moved with her parents to England where she enjoyed the privilege of attending unusual and prestigious schools, the Froebel Institute and Badminton. She read Classics at Somerville College, Oxford and studied philosophy at Newnham College, Cambridge. Her outstanding academic accomplishments gained Murdoch a Tutorial Fellowship in Philosophy at St Anne’s College, Oxford where she taught for over fifteen years. In 1963-67 she continued her teaching career as lecturer in Philosophy at the Royal College of Art in London. This successful career in academia was complemented by an equally successful writing career. From 1954, the year in which her first novel Under the Net was published, Murdoch continued to develop as an artist. Awarded the Booker Prize, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Golden PEN Award, she spent most of her life publishing her writing and actively participating in discussions concerning ethical and moral issues. After a dramatic battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Murdoch died in 1999 leaving a colossal oeuvre of twenty- six novels, two poetry collections, several plays, one short story and some substantial pieces of work on continental philosophy from Plato to Kant and from Hegel to Sartre.1 During her life Murdoch showed interest in ideas originating in various disciplines ranging from Ancient philosophy, Christian theology and Buddhism, to nineteenth-century canonical writers like Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, George Eliot and Proust, the political thought of 1 Murdoch wrote a first monograph about Jean-Paul Sartre published in English, Sartre: Romantic Rationalist (1953). She also wrote a book of moral philosophy The Sovereignty of Good (1970) which comprises her three previously published papers: “The Idea of Perfection”, “On ‘God’ and ‘Good’” and “The Sovereignty of Good over Other Concepts”. The papers contain Murdoch’s response to the views of Plato, Simone Weil, Stuart Hampshire, Kant, Freud and Marx. Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals (1992) is Murdoch’s another piece of work on philosophy. The book is a revised and expanded version of Murdoch’s 1982 Gifford Lectures and elaborates among others on Plato, Kant, Hegel, Buddhist philosophers, Schopenhauer and Derrida. 4 Marx, and Freud’s psychoanalysis. The list of conceptual sources providing Murdoch with material for reflection is thus extensive and encompasses ideas that were formulated in Ancient Greece as well as the most compelling and exciting theories originating in the twentieth century. The years she spent at university provided Murdoch with an opportunity to make lasting friendships and she was acquainted with the leading figures of the contemporary philosophical scene. The bonds between Murdoch and Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley and Elizabeth Anscombe were formed during her first years at Oxford. Among the moralists, logicians and language-analysts who left an indelible impression on her one should also mention the names of Gilbert Ryle, Richard Mervyn Hare, Stuart Hampshire, Alfred Jules Ayer and Charles Stevenson. The list of people whose presence is markedly indicated in Murdoch’s intellectual life would not be properly assembled if the name of Ludwig Wittgenstein were not included. From 1947-48 Murdoch held the Sarah Smithson studentship in philosophy at Newham College, Cambridge. Although she was not formally taught by Wittgenstein, she met him at that time and remained deeply influenced by his philosophy throughout her career. Apart from the crème de la crème of the Oxbridge post-war graduates and distinguished professors, Murdoch also made significant acquaintances outside the university walls. During her stay in Brussels, where she went on behalf of UNRRA to work in camps for refugees,2 she became familiar with existentialism. In 1945 she met in person the main figure of the movement, Jean-Paul Sartre. The importance of this meeting is evidenced by her first published book, which was on Sartre and was the first monograph in English to present Sartre’s philosophy to a British audience. The Bulgarian-born novelist and playwright Elias Canetti also played an important role in Murdoch’s life. This Nobel Prize Laureate was a powerful source of influence who held Murdoch in his intellectual grip for almost three years from the time they met in 1952. Another important source of inspiration for Murdoch was Simone Weil, the French philosopher, Christian mystic and activist. In her book Iris Murdoch, Gender and Philosophy, Sabina Lovibond points out: “Beginning in the early 1950s, Iris Murdoch falls under the 2 UNRRA stands for United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. After years of probing and analysing various concepts, Murdoch found philosophical thought which turned out to be resistant to the trial of time. Miles Leeson, following Peter Conradi, observes: “Platonism was the only philosophy which remained with Murdoch throughout her life, and which she never disowned or discarded […] Platonism is never far from the surface of almost every novel discussed, it is in the competition with other, more contemporary philosophies” (2). Murdoch’s choosing to develop a form of Platonism in the later twentieth century was to say the least unusual considering the prevalence of analytic and language philosophy in post-war Britain. David Tracy observes that “for many philosophers in the Continental tradition from Nietzsche through Heidegger to Deleuze, Plato is where the Greeks took a wrong turn – either away from the honest aesthetic world of tragedy

According to a number of scientists, the writer's passion for existentialism went through several phases and was replaced by the construction of her own ethical and aesthetic system based on Platonism. The attitude of Iris Murdoch, philosopher and writer, to existentialism has always been dual. Already from the first works analyzing this problem, it is clear that Murdoch, enthusiastically exploring existentialism, paying due tribute to it, but at the same time criticized it. Murdoch's novels are not psychological in the classical sense of the concept. The writer was so immersed in the inner world of man that the reality in her novels sometimes eluded the field of view of the author, did not exist outside the consciousness of the hero, dissolved in his experiences. In such statement of a question the crisis tendency was concealed. Even at the very beginning of creativity in search of some special inner, spiritual, psychological, and therefore universal truth Murdoch was fascinated by the study of dark, destructive principles and forces in the human psyche, focused on the analysis of painful aspirations and feelings.

ABSTRACT This thesis considers how Iris Murdoch radically reconceptualises the possibilities of realism through her interrogation of the relationship between life and art. Her awareness of the unreality of realist conventions leads her to seek new forms of expression, resulting in daring experimentation with form and language, exploration of the relationship between author and character, and foregrounding of the artificiality of the text. She exposes the limitations of language, thereby involving herself with issues associated with the postmodern aesthetic. The Black Prince is an artistic manifesto in which Murdoch repeatedly destroys the illusion of the reality of the text in her attempts to make language communicate truth. Whereas The Black Prince sees Murdoch contemplating Hamlet, The Sea, The Sea meditates on The Tempest, as Murdoch returns to Shakespeare in order to examine the relationship between life and art.

That is the question which has perplexed so many readers who find in her novels sig­ nificant statements about the human condition rendered by a talent equalled only by a handful of other writers of our time, and it is the question which the pages follow­ ing try to answer. In general, the implicit argument under­ lying those pages is tripartite: (1) only comedy of a kind which resembles closely Murdoch's conception of love will allow a novelist to detach himself enough from his charac­ ters to give them a tolerant scope within which to humanly exist; (2) Murdoch has succeeded in maintaining that balanced synthesis between acceptance and judgement only in her earli­ est work and only with complete success in The Bell; and (3) the increasingly bitter tone of her satire — not to mention just the mere fact of her use of satire as a mode for character creation — has, in her most recent work, blighted the vitality of her characters by too strictly limiting them to usually negative meanings. Close analysis has been made, hence, of the ways in which comic devices affect us as readers in our perception of Murdoch's per­ sons.

Murdoch scholarship traces the marks she succeeded in leaving as her intellectual legacy. The dynamic of tracing these marks follows two trajectories: inwards and outwards. One spirals inwards to the formative influences on Murdoch’s work through study of the marks left in the myriad letters she wrote and the marginalia annotating her books. The other spirals outwards to plot the imprint Murdoch left through the traces of her presence in the writings of others. The Iris Murdoch Special Collections in the Archives of Kingston University are a rich resource for original research; new acquisitions inspire work by scholars from around the world2. Letters to Raymond Queneau, Hal Lidderdale, John Gheeraert and Harry Weinberger have recently been acquired3, and Anne Rowe and Avril Horner are currently editing Living on Paper: Letters from Iris Murdoch 1942 - 19954. Evidence that critical work on Murdoch is burgeoning is demonstrated by recent collections of essays, Iris Murdoch and Moral Imaginations(Roberts and Baumann), Iris Murdoch and Her Work: Critical Essays(Kırca and Okuroglu), and Iris Murdoch and Morality(Rowe and Horner), and by monographs such as Leeson’s Iris Murdoch: Philosophical Novelist and Zuba’s Iris Murdoch’s Contemporary Retrieval of Plato: The Influence of an Ancient Philosopher on a Modern Novelist. But what is even more significant is that Murdoch’s influence appears increasingly ubiquitous.

This case may be relevant to our understanding of memory processes and deficits in Alzheimer’s disease.

    Good Versus Evil in Austen’s Mansfield Park and Iris Murdoch’s A Fairly Honourable Defeat Gillian Dooley It is a commonplace observation that good characters are the most difficult for an artist to make interesting. This was the basis of one of Plato’s arguments against art: ‘[The] fretful temper gives scope for a great diversity of dramatic representation; whereas the calm and wise character in its unvarying constancy is not easy to represent, nor when represented is it readily understood.’ 1 Perhaps for this reason many novels are about not fundamentally evil characters, but imperfect people, often young, whose progress towards maturity claims the interest of the reader, and who at the end are presumed to have reached the less interesting state of ‘calmness and wisdom.’ A writer who does not wish to glamorise evil may choose to write this kind of bildungsroman instead of trying to present a character who is morally exemplary from the start. The more difficult path is to place in the foreground a ‘good’ character who must deal with vicissitudes which form the interest of the novel. This, for example, seems to have been the task Jane Austen set herself when she wrote Mansfield Park . She had tackled this problem to some extent in Sense and Sensibility , but Elinor’s maturity and good sense is balanced by the painful lessons Marianne has to learn: there are two heroines. In Mansfield Park , on the other hand, despite the attractions of Mary Crawford, Fanny Price is undoubtedly the central figure. The problem Austen faced in presenting such an unglamorous, passive and, to many, unpalatably virtuous heroine is similar to that faced by Iris Murdoch when she dramatises a figure of good such as Tallis Browne in A Fairly Honourable Defeat (1970), although their methods are somewhat different.

    The audience for which Walkiewicz has written is difficult to identify. A student is not apt to grasp the modest directive when asked to consider the relationship of the famous essays to "the ontogeny of Barth's corpus" and to view that relationship as "metaphoric rather than strictly exegetic or completely correlative." Instructed that ontogeny recapitulating cosmogeny is "of course" (!) the governing principle of Finnegans Wake, even professors of literature will find themselves daunted. What audience that requires those goosy headlines is properly addressed in such a manner? The irony is that Walkiewicz deserves an audience for this otherwise careful and generally successful book. Pp. xvi + 304 Reviewed by Amin Malak With the publication of her twenty-second novel, The Good Apprentice, Iris Murdoch proves once again to her critics and admirers alike that hers are a talent and an energy that deserve close and alert scrutiny. Peter Conradi's Iris Murdoch: The Saint and the Artist represents a welcome addition to the now established and steadily growing Murdoch criticism. Interest­ ingly, Conradi's book combines mainstream Murdoch scholarship, which usually follows a predictable pattern of examining her novels within the context of her critical and philosophical pronouncements, with original insights based on sympathetic, clear-headed reading of Mur­ doch's fiction. Avoiding a chronological survey of Murdoch's work, Conradi divides his book into three parts based on three rather vaguely defined conceptual perspectives. The first, entitled "A Kind of Moral Psychology," deals with Under the Net, An Accidental Man, A Severed Head, Bruno's Dream.
