It is affiliated with the National Education Association. The Association is supported by the dues of its members and receives no tax funds from any source. The support of education prior to the 1850's had been sporadic and unorganized. By 1852 the need for legislation to finance public education was so apparent that the Indi- ana General Assembly passed laws providing for both state and local levies for school purposes. This important 1852 law was contested in the courts, however, and the Indi- ana Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional because the tax was "discriminatory." As a result of this ruling by the Indiana Supreme Court that local taxes could not be used for public education which threatened a serious setback to education in the state, ISTA was founded on Christmas Day, 1854. One hundred seventy-eight farsighted edu- cators from over the state journeyed to Indianapolis for a meeting to contest this threat to free schools. That they won this basic struggle is now history. Born as a crusade, the ISTA in one hundred fifty three years of service has adhered to its original premise that equal educational opportunity for the fullest individual develop- ment is the inherent right of every American and, further, that public education is basic to our democracy and to the perpetuation of our American way of life. In all of this history, the ISTA has recognized that the heart of the public school is the teacher and Educational Support Professional and that their standard of living and cultural environ- ment are basic to high quality performance for the youth of our country. People make the community, people make history, not buildings, not dates. Forward This History of Hudson, MA, is a compilation of newspaper articles written by Wilbur F. Brigham to inform his fellow townspeople of the events and the people who had formed his new town of Hudson. He was born in Feltonville in this northern section of Marlboro, on April 9, 1839. As a young man he learned shoemaking by hand in the early shops, attended town affairs, and promoted the formation of a new town of Hudson in 1866. He loved his town, knew all its people, and wanted all to know its heritage. The first nine articles called “Hudson Landmarks” were written 1883 to 1884 when he was about forty years old and all was fresh in his mind. The elder citizens could tell him stories from the 1700’s, about the people and their everyday lives so this book may not be a true “History Book” of all dates and facts in chronological order. These articles by Wilbur F. Brigham depict the attitudes, opinions, experiences of a prominent business man who was educated in one room schoolhouses, played on the streets, shopped locally, and employed many of the men in town.
