2018 Annual Report PRESERVING OUR PAST, SAFEGUARDING OUR FUTURE TM

May 1, 2019 Dear Friends of the NYYC Foundation: I am pleased to enclose the 2018 Annual Report of the Foundation, detailing some of its activities over the past year. The New York Yacht Club has played an integral role in the social and fabric of our nation for the last 175 years, demonstrating time and again that we value both history and tradition. Eleven years ago, the New York Yacht Club Foundation was established as a tax-exempt charity to provide financial support for the historic preservation of our landmark clubhouses in New York and Newport. These magnificent and treasured buildings are central to the Club’s history and heritage. We are proud to report that the Foundation, which operates as a §501(c)3 public charity, has won support over the years wit donors, contributing over $4.6 million in support of numerous preservation projects at both clubhouses. Our thanks go out to the many members who have contributed to these and on-going projects. 2019 marks the New York Yacht Club’s 175th Anniversary and to commemorate this important milestone, the Foundation has established the 175th Society, an important initiative designed to encourage broad participation across the NYYC membership. Joining the 175th Society is easy. Simply make a donation of $175 or more to the Foundation in 2019 and you will receive a handsome 175th Society pin identifying you as a member. Members will be eligible for exciting new benefits that include an exclusive member event during the summer at Harbour Court. There are many important projects still to be done at both clubhouses, some of which are known today and others which will emerge in the years to come. Each of us has a special opportunity to preserve our past as we safeguard our future by supporting the New York Yacht Club Foundation. Please visit the website at www.nyycfoundation.org for full details about the Foundation, its past and future projects, and complete information about how your donation can help. Thank you for joining us in this most worthy and important endeavor.

Formerly the Brown family residence, Harbour Court was designed by Boston-based Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. The Renaissance Norman-style mansion was completed in 1906, with grounds designed by Olmsted Brothers. Harbour Court is considered of one of Newport’s great early twentieth-century houses. In 2016, the New York Yacht Club received the prestigious Doris Duke Historic Preservation Award from the Newport Restoration Foundation and the City of Newport for the façade restoration, which would have not been possible without the support of the New York Yacht Club Foundation toward the over $1 million cost of the multi-year project. The New York Yacht Club Foundation was founded in 2008 as a public charity to continue this tradition of philanthropic support for the New York Yacht Club’s clubhouses through donations and bequests from donors.

HENNERY AND ICEHOUSE

The Hennery and Icehouse structures were 100 years old, among Harbour Court’s original estate outbuildings. The buildings were in disrepair and in especially bad structural condition. Because of their age and significance to the original Brown family home at Harbour Court, the Newport Historic District commission (NHD) needed to be involved in the Club’s restoration plans. In the summer of 2018 the NHD approved the Club’s plans, including the removal and re-building of the Icehouse. Groundbreaking was mid- October. This season at Harbour Court the Hennery building will be used as a staff Icehouse Before locker room and break space, and the Icehouse will be used as a receiving station and for temporary storage. Both projects preserve the historical grounds at Harbour Court while providing much needed additional space for Club operations.
