I aimed to figure out when, why and how the band began its shift towards using the analog synthe- sizer, especially the Minimoog, for producing bass lines. In addition I tried to find out if the Minimoog affected the band’s popularity and also if the band’s success had an impact on the course of dance music. I researched general history of dance and funk music. I also examined the analog synthesizer’s growth of popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. The key topics of my work are the Minimoog and analogue synthesizers, electric bass, bass lines and timbre. As my reference material I used literature based on the history of funk and dance music. My reference materials also included one dissertation on analog synthesis, internet docu- ments and recordings. By listening to the recordings, I could hear what instruments the musicians had been using and also deduct when the band had started to use more and more synthesizers. By listening to the earlier recordings I tried to find reasons behind the choices in different instruments. The recordings were the biggest source of material in my history research work. As a result of my work I found that the band’s choices of instruments were affected by the musicians’ earlier preferences in sound and effect pedals. The new soundscape provided by the synthesizer certainly was a key factor. The members of Parliament/Funkadelic were early adopters of new musical instruments and ways to make music. The analogue syn- thesizer’s timbre and way to produce sound suited better the band’s new musical output. My research can be used as a brief and compact take on the growth of the analogue syn- thesizer in funk and dance music Keywords electric bass, synthesizer, funk, minimoog Sisällys 1 Johdanto 1 1.1 Tutkimusmenetelmät 1 1.2 Työn taustaa 1 2 Parliament/Funkadelic -yhtyeen biografia 2 2.1 George Clinton 3 2.2 William “Bootsy” Collins 4 2.3 Bernie Worrell 4 3 Robert Moog ja analogisyntetisaattorin yleistyminen 5 3.1 Minimoog 5 3.2 Ainutlaatuinen bassosointi 6 3.3 Stevie Wonder 7 3.4 Herbie Hancock 8 4 Diskomusiikin yleistyminen 1970-luvulla 8 5 Funkmusiikin peruspilarit 10 5.1 James Brown 10 5.2 Sly Stone 10 6 Parliament/Funkadelic -yhtyeen bassonkäyttö 11 6.1 Collins ja fuzz 12 6.2 Mu-Tron III 14 6.3 Läpimurto 14 7 Funkentelechy vs. Placebo Syndrome vs. Worrell vs. Minimoog 15 7.1 Flash Light 15 8 Listojen kärjessä 16 8.1 Minimoogin suosion salaisuus 17 8.2 Collins ja syntetisaattorit 18 8.3 Viimeiset hitit 18 9 YHTEENVETO 19 9.1 Pohdinta 20 Lähdeluettelo 21 Äänitelähteet 24 Liitteet Liite 1. CD -liite 1 1 Johdanto Tutkimustyöni kohteena on yhdysvaltalaisen Parliament/Funkadelic -yhtyeen basson- käyttö. 1970-luvulla Robert Moogin kehittämä Minimoog-analogisyntetisaattori tuli suosituksi eri musiikkityylien soittajien keskuudessa. Myös Parliament/Funkadelic otti soittimen osaksi yhtyeen sointia. Syntetisaattorin vaikutusta populaarimusiikkiin on tutkittu funk- musiikin kantilta suhteellisen vähän, vaikka vaikutus on kiistaton. Tutkimustyöni aihepiirin mielekkyyttä tukevana kirjallisena lähteenä pidän Timothy Scott Stilsonin väitöskirjan ’Efficiently - Variable Non-Oversampled Algorithms in Virtual- Analog Music Synthesis - A Root - Locus Perspective’. Väitöskirjassaan analogisyntetisaattorin mekaniikasta Stilson toteaa, että kaikista musiikkityyleistä juuri funkmusiikissa syntetisaattorin rooli vakiintui rytmi- ja bassoinstrumentiksi. Stilson jatkaa, että funkmusiikista syntetisaattori siirtyi 1970-luvun tanssimusiikin piiriin, jonka muokkaantumiseen syntetisaattori vaikutti keskeisesti 1980- ja 1990-luvuilla. (Stilson 2006, 2) 2 Parliament/Funkadelic -yhtyeen biografia Yhdysvaltalaisen George Clintonin luotsaama Parliament/Funkadelic -yhtye mullisti yhdysvaltalaisen R&B -musiikin 1970-luvulla. Yhtye loi ainutlaatuisen p-funkiksi kutsutun musiikkityylin yhdistämällä soulia, funkia ja happorockia Jimi Hendrixin, Frank Zappan ja Sly & the Family Stonen hengessä. Parliament/Funkadelicin kultavuosina 1970-luvulla yhtyeellä oli peräti 40 R&B -hittisingleä, joukossa neljä listaykköstä. George Clinton, the renowned musician, bandleader, and producer, hired Hendricks & Lewis (H&L) to represent him in various infringement disputes from March 2005 – August 2008. The work performed on Clinton’s behalf constituted over $3 Million in fees; Clinton refused to pay over $1.72 Million. H&L pursued the enforcement of its pastdue fees in arbitration and then later moved to compel the arbitration award in the District Court of Washington. The underlying appeal surrounds the court’s enforcement of the arbitration award and assignment of master recordings of Clinton’s performances with the group Funkadelic to receivership ("Masters"). The Masters songs at issue are “Hardcore Jollies,” “One Nation Under a Groove,” “Uncle Jam Wants You,” and “The Electric Spanking of War Babies”—all with registered copyrights. The copyrights were originally obtained by Warner Bros. and subsequently transferred to Clinton. Clinton alleges that the assignment of the Masters to receivership was improper and in violation of Copyright Act § 201 (e) which serves as protection to authors for involuntary transfer of their copyrights. The panel reasoned that Clinton was not an “author” of the Masters within the meaning of the act since all four Masters were created under agreements with Warner Bros.

  • Mose Davis Public Relations Information
Mose Davis Public Relations Information “My name is Mose…and you can call me Mose” – Mose Davis That quote from Mose Davis can be heard on Hamilton Bohannon’s hit record “Let’s Start the Dance”. The tune is a smoking-hot club classic. And the quote cuts through the clutter and camouflage of funk wannabes, to reveal a pure fact – Mose is Mose. Before Stevie Wonder, before Bernie Worrell, there was Mose Davis pushing the frontiers of funk with his use of the organ as the source of the bass line, during the late 1960’s. And if imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Mose Davis has been flattered by the best. And some of the biggest names in hip-hop have sampled a sip of Mose’s musical brew, including Snoop, Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah. Classically trained at the Detroit Conservatory of Music, Mose Davis is an exceptional jazz artist and prominent fixture on the Atlanta music scene. Davis identifies jazz greats, Jimmy Smith and Ahmad Jamal among his musical influences. Davis performs with top acts across the country and internationally. Mose Davis has performed with Candi Staton, The Isley Brothers, Marlena Shaw, David Ruffin, Ray Parker, Jr., The Counts, Funkadelics and Carl Anderson. His festival appearances include The Atlanta Jazz Festival (with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra), The Macon Jazz Festival and the internationally renowned Spoleto Festival. And now comes the new CD, “Sunshine”. “It’s a mix of jazz – the rough and the smooth – blended with some Latin and rock influences,” Davis says.

Media Contact: Terri Dixon LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS 323.469.8680, ext. 232 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE CALIFORNIA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM PRESENTS ‘RHYTHM OF VISION: THE ARTISTRY OF OVERTON LOYD’ THROUGH SEPTEMBER 18, 2016 Artist Narrative 1 Artist Narrative 2 Exhibition Photos LOS ANGELES – March 24, 2016 - The California African American Museum (CAAM) opened its latest exhibition, “Rhythm of Vision: The Artistry of Overton Loyd,” March 17, ongoing through September 18, 2016. Overton Loyd is widely known for his cover art on Parliament’s 1978 album, Motor Booty Affair. The exhibition kicked off with a weekend of events including a one-on-one interview with the Loyd, reception and a curatorial walkthrough of the exhibition with CAAM’s Visual Arts Curator Vida L. Brown and the artist. The exhibition is the first show to illuminate Loyd’s scale of artistry that comprises complex and varied practices such as painting, drawing, illustration and album cover design. Parliament, led by legendary George Clinton, redefined the landscape of the contemporary movement through their P- Funk mythology that consisted of a group of fictional characters, themes and ideas incorporated into a series of albums. Loyd’s creative and artistic contributions to the P- Funk mythology were significant during the P-Funk band’s prime, and played a major role in the understanding and evolution of its fictional characters, themes and ideas. A Detroit native, Loyd is currently the creative director for George Clinton and the Parliament-Funkadelic where he designs multimedia stage shows, costumes, album covers, websites and animated videos. Rhythm of Vision was curated to demonstrate Loyd’s focus on an array of subjects and his mastery in various mediums, showing his artistry that extends beyond the Parliament collection.

ABSTRACT AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES LACY, TRAVIS K. B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era.
