This year’s winner of both our Branch competitions was the Talbot in Ripley. The runner-up in the Pub of the Year competition was the White Hart at Bargate, who had won the competition in the previous two years. The runner-up in the Cider Pub of the Year competition was Angels Micro Pub, Belper. Many congratulations to Steve and Angie at the Talbot for their double success and also to the runners-up in throughout October and judging of the 6 finalists both competitions. will take place in November. Pubs nominated for the Cider competition would be expected to serve and promote a good range of real ciders and perries throughout the year. The 2020 Branch Pub of The Year competition will be organised by ourselves and we will be asking for nominations during November, with judging of the 8 finalists taking place during December and January. The Pub of the Year is not based solely on the range of real ale on offer, but takes into account several other factors such as the welcome you receive, quality of service, atmosphere, décor and community involvement.     Brewing Science Graduate Profile Charlie Killeen MSc Brewing Science & Practice 2014-15. Assistant Brewer at Blue Monkey Brewery, Giltbrook, Nottingham. Tell us about your current role and what it means in terms of the day to day work you get involved with…. My current job role is Assistant Brewer at Blue Monkey Brewery, a small 25 barrel plant that focuses on producing craft beer. As is the case in a majority of microbreweries, set job roles tend to overlap and can be a lot more hands on compared to larger companies. Current day to day tasks include wort production, racking, yeast handling, stock taking, cleaning and running brewery tours. You name it I’ve put my hand to it at some point! Is this the kind of role you thought you might get involved in when you first came to study brewing at Nottingham? Yes, as I was interested in getting into the craft brewing industry. This role has given me a lot of freedom to apply some of my masters knowledge to real life situations and a great opportunity to get commercial training in all aspects of the brewing process. How does working in the industry match your personal aspirations and expectations of it? I went into the industry quite open minded with my own personal goal of becoming a great brewer. I think played to my advantage as I had no real set ‘expectations’ so to speak, but I have come the realise that every brewery is different and that the industry is ever changing and competitive. In what ways was the MSc Brewing Science & Practice helpful in preparing you for a career in the brewing industry? It gave me a lot more confidence in entering a new industry that can sometimes be a bit daunting at first.

Well I hadn’t been there and so Mrs R and I decided to head in that direction this June. We stationed ourselves for three nights in the village of Cottingham. Cottingham had the advantage of having a railway station and being one stop away from Hull in one direction and Beverley in the other. We arrived on a Friday lunchtime and headed first towards Hull for a leisurely wander around Hull’s Old Town in the afternoon before catching a bus to the East side of town to watch Hull Kingston Rovers playing Rugby League against Huddersfield.     Nottingham CAMRA Timeline So, what has happened in the years since CAMRA and its Nottingham Branch was formed? Year Events 1971 On the 16th of March, Michael Hardman, Graham Lees, Jim Makin and Bill Mellor formed the Campaign for Real Ale. Somewhat ironically the organisation’s birth took place in Kruger's Bar, Dunquin in the Dingle Peninsula of the Irish Republic.1 ​ ​ ​ 1972 Hardy’s Kimberley Brewery Limited changes its name to Hardys & Hansons 12 Limited, despite having merged with Hansons Limited in 1930. ​ The Victoria ​ ​ Centre shopping centre is completed by Taylor Woodrow on the site of the old Victoria Railway Station, demolished in 1967.20 ​ 1973 The Nottingham Branch of CAMRA was formed on the 15th August at the Newcastle Arms in Basford. A Branch Committee was agreed upon and a vote ​ held as to whether or not cheese sandwiches should be served at the next 2 meeting………. N​ otts County FC finish the 1972-73 season as Third Division ​ Runners Up and are promoted to Division Two.4 ​ ​ 1974 CAMRA publishes the first edition of the “Good Beer Guide”.24 ​ 1975 Brian Clough becomes manager of Nottingham Forest F.C. on the 5th January, 12 weeks after his 44-day tenure at Leeds United. ​ 1976 Nottingham CAMRA launches its first branch magazine, the Notts & Derby 9 ​ Drinker under the editorial leadership of Spyke Golding. ​ Peter Taylor joins ​ ​ ​ Nottingham Forest as Assistant Manager and the club wins the Anglo-Scottish Cup, beating Orient 5-1 on aggregate. ​ 1977 Nottingham CAMRA hosts the Silver Jubilee Beer Festival at the Victoria Leisure 8 Centre Thursday, 13th October to Sunday 16th October 1977.
