EDITORIAL We have been inundated with news and articles but some of you seem to have forgotten that we do not produce an August issue. Don’t be disheartened if your article has not been included. We have had to make some very difficult choices as to the locality and dates when editing this ssue. Please give us follow-up details of events. Let us know your successes and achievements. It is also a good idea to include a photo, if possible in jpg. form . We look forward to hearing from you. Page No. 2 Camelford and Advent WW1 Camelford and Advent 1914—1918, with help from a grant awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) First World War: then and now programme, are now pleased to announce that all our research has culminated in the production of a public presentation. To mark the Centenary of the First World War the presentation will show the Heroes from Camelford and Advent who went to fight in the First World War and returned; it will also show the names of the men that made the ultimate sacrifice. There will be a slide show giving a glimpse into this period of time and will be shown alongside a recording of a local man’s recollection of his military life from joining up to his return to hospital when wounded. Also in the presentation we have old newspaper articles which show various events that went on in the local area. We already have items from the First World War on loan but would like to have more, so if you have any please call us. The presentation will be held Friday 18th September in the Riverside Rooms, Market Place, Camelford. The opening times are from 10 am to 4 pm. Everyone is welcome and entry is free. You will hopefully be able to find your Great War Hero. There will be fun items and a prize quiz for the junior visitors to enjoy. For more information please call us on 01840 212524 or email [email protected] Camelford Branch of the British Legion opened in 1923 and closed in 1967. Camelford Branch of the Royal British Legion opened in 1999 and its aim now is the same as it was in 1923, to ensure that serving and service men and women who are in need of both financial and moral support can call upon support no matter what service they were in and when. Page No. 3 Rev Peter Dixon held an opening service on Friday 7th August at St Julitta Church, Lanteglos-by-Camelford for the bi-annual Flower Festival. Over 30 local organisations and businesses sponsored the magnificent displays- we are so grateful to them all. Some talented members of the organisations displayed their expertise by arranging displays depicting musical shows, in other instances local flower arrangers were co-opted to help out. The arrangements were stunning. Many people made refreshments and some helped to sell them throughout the weekend. Other people were generous with their time by playing the organ, taking entrance money and selling raffle tickets. The festival culminated with the Tintagel Male Voice choir concert on Sunday evening, they sang some old favourites and also some songs from the shows. The evening was enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Approximately 500 people visited the church over the weekend and the fantastic sum of £2,200.00 was raised. Lanteglos Church is in need of extensive work at a great cost and The Friends of Lanteglos Church (FOLC) are extremely grateful to everyone who helped in any way and those who attended the flower festival. Thank you WI entry at St Julitta Flower Festival Easter Parade Please don’t forget to fill in your Lanteglos questionnaire Page No. 4 Dragon’s Den experience for Access to Higher Education Students! What a couple of months it’s been; to lose two banks is unfortunate - to lose three looks like carelessness! As ever profit is winning out over people …. It was ever thus. I hope who-ever-it-is-who-is-going-to- get-a-massive-bonus for closing our last remaining bank enjoys his ill-gotten gains, an Aston Martin, a swimming pool or a holiday home in Rock? Or all three, who knows. Well, good luck to him. We will not let it sink our efforts to keep Camelford afloat. I was born and grew up in Launceston, moved away when I was 14 and lived “up country”, first in Sussex and then, when I married, Surrey, just outside the M25 (believe me, the traffic in Camelford is a breeze compared to that). We came “home” to Cornwall twelve years ago and rented for six months in Camelford before moving into our new property. Camelford is brilliant, the people, the buildings, the history, the shops, not to mention the park, river walks, cafés, pubs and leisure centre …………… I could go on. Sometimes it’s difficult to appreciate what’s on your own doorstep, and the grass is always greener elsewhere if you’ve lived in a place for many years, but believe me and all the many people who visit or have come to live in Camelford, the grass here is much greener.
