"a freakish spectacle of craving"By S. RichardsLady of the Burlesque Ballet (Kindle Single) (Pshares Singles) by Timothy Schaffert was a moody, pensive little story for me tonight. Sometimes I enjoy reading a short story that wants to sit and linger with me for awhile, long after I've finished reading, and this was such a story. I found Irish to be quite a sad and needful character, poor and hungry, begging not just for food but craving love and care, too, wanting to be wanted. As the blurb states, we see Irish morph throughout her life, shrinking and expanding, all due to emotional influence and that ever-present need to fill an empty spot inside herself. With a definite melancholy feel to it, this short story is quite well-written, with Irish a layered and deep character from beginning to end. The author showed me Irish, depicting her in a tender way, easily and not heavy- handedly showing me need and flaw within her, making me care for her and about what happened to her. It's a touching story that will sit with you, maybe make you feel a bit lonely, a bit sad, but it will also leave you feeling as if you read something very much worth reading, and worth thinking about.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It all started with a simple toothacheBy J. ChambersWell, I have to say that "Lady of the Burlesque Ballet" was one of the most original and least predictable stories that I've ever read. Author Timothy Schaffert clearly has a fertile imagination to conceive the bizarre story of Irish Maupin, who went from being a poor waif hanging out around a candy factory to become one of the most famous celebrities in a popular freak show. Poor Irish--manipulated by a scoundrel who only wanted her for an advertising campaign, and then discarded and left on her own--made her way through life in a very unconventional way. Was she ever really happy, and did she experience true love? You be the judge. An enjoyable and interesting read, and definitely something different.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lady of the Burlesque Ballet....By Mule SmartsThis is one of the most disturbing pieces of prose I've ever read. Why I bothered to do so, truly has no answer. I've struggled with weight issues my entire life, and, if a person was ready to finally give up and let the issue finish killing them off without a whimper, this is definitely the piece to use as an excuse.Absolutely deplorable, with nothing more to be said, except, if you are floundering with this issue, read at your own risk. I will never look at this piece of cruel tripe again. It offers no hope and no understanding whatsoever of the trials of Miss Irish. Simple a hopeless and demeaning look at a tormented spirit. Not to mention, makes little or no sense whatsoever as any kind of a story line. Will immediately be deleting this ugly, very ugly story from my Kindle. In a topsy-turvy ragtime era of side-shows and bamboozlers, Irish Maupin goes from street urchin to burlesque star. Plucked from the streets as a girl and fattened up for candy-factory advertising, she navigates a sensational career around heart-break and loneliness, gaining and losing hundreds of pounds, manipulated by the men around her even as she defies them. From acclaimed Nebraska author Timothy Schaffert, this inaugural Ploughshares Solo is a surreal adult fairy tale about obesity, murder, and how we change our bodies to meet the needs of others.ABOUT THE AUTHORTimothy Schaffertrsquo;s novel The Swan Gondola, a story of love and ghosts set among the flimflam men, snake-oil salesmen, occultists, and actresses of the 1898 Omaha Worldrsquo;s Fair, is forthcoming from Riverhead/Penguin.
