Governor James Murray (1760-1766), Governor Guy Carleton (1766-1778), Governor Frederick Haldimand (1778-1785), Governor Lord Dorchester (Guy Carleton) (1786-1791) - All three gentlemen wanted a British presence in the Lower St. Lawrence region, from Lévis county, the latter located across the Capital of British North America, Québec City to the Gaspé Peninsula - The first of these British Isles settlers were the Scots, followed by families from Northern Ireland and England - Finally the Irish Catholics arrived, the latter group soon after their arrivals greatly outnumbered all of the above settlers - Many of these early settlers stayed only a generation or two, many moved to Upper Canada (Ontario), the Montréal region, Québec City, the Prairie Provinces at a much later time period and many more to the U.S.A. - The farms of the Lower St. Lawrence were small, the region was isolated, the winters were cold, the growing seasons were short - But, many North American Anglo Protestants have lineages within these regions and many of today's genealogy researchers are not even aware that some of their ancestors resided in these regions.

Counties:

Bellechasse County In 1791 it was referred to as Devon, located on the southern shores of the St. Lawrence, east of Dorchester, west of Montmagny (Cornwallis), north of the Maine border - The Anglo Protestants of the county resided in Armagh, Ashburton, Beaumont, Bellechasse, Buckland, Lellis.

Bonaventure A county first settled by members of the Micmac First Nation - In the 1750s, the Acadians arrived - In 1784, the British Loyalists arrived and formed Cox Township. The Anglo Protestants or their descendants can be found in all hamlets, villages and towns of the county including Black Cape, Bonaventure, Caplan, Carleton, Cascapédia, Cox, Escuminiac, Grand Cascapedia, Hamilton, Hope Town, Mann, Maria, Matapédia, Millstream, New Carlisle, New Richmond, North Restigouche, Oak Bay, Paspébiac, Port Daniel, Restigouche, Ristigouche, Sellarsville, Shigawake.

Charlevoix A county on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, previously referred to as Northumberland - Charlevoix is located east of Montmorency county to the Saguenay river, north to Chicoutimi county. Following the British conquest, the centres of the Anglo Protestant presence within the county were Murray Bay and Tadoussac - Anglo Protestant settlers of the region had a

close affiliation with the Ministry Societies of Rivière-du-Loup from about 1800 to 1850

Cornwallis A 1791 territory located south of the St. Lawrence River, southeast of Québec city, from Devon county eastwards along the southshore of the St. Lawrence to Rimouski and beyond - Named for General Charles Cornwallis, the settlements within this vast expense of land in which Anglo Protestants resided were the hamlets and villages of Bungay, Elgin Road Settlement, Ixworth, Kamouraska, Packington, Patton, Pinquet, Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup

Devon A 1791 township located on the southshore of the St. Lawrence River, east of Dorchester county, southeast of Québec city, west of Cornwallis and north of the Maine border - Modern day's county of Devon is Bellechasse - The Anglo Protestants of Devon resided mostly in the 1790's and beyond in the hamlets of Ashford, Ashburton, Beaumont, Bellechasse, Buckland, Lellis - see also Hertford

Gaspé The birthplace of New France (La Nouvelle France) - The Anglo Protestant presence dates back to the 1760's - Channel Islanders from Jersey and Guernsey, Scottish, British, Irish immigrants were all early settlers. About 1784, the United Empire Loyalists arrived in Cox Township on the Chaleurs Bay. Douglastown near present-day Gaspé City, also experienced the arrivals of American families (non-Loyalists), these families might have preceded those of Cox Township

Hertford A township of 1792 located east of the counties of Beauce and Lotbinière in a region described as Lower St. Lawrence - Hertford and Devon became Bellechase.

Kamouraska Located east of of L'Islet County along the shores of the St. Lawrence - In 1791 the region was part of Cornwallis - The Protestantism presence was limited to the village of Kamouraska for a short period of time.

Matapédia An interior county within the Gaspé Peninsula, southwest of Matane county, east of Rimouski county, north of Bonaventure county. The Anglo Protestant presence within this county was limited to the villages of Sayabec, Kempt (Road) and Matapédia River Valley - The first Protestants were from Scotland in the 1790s, although, few in numbers, the hamlets and villages they pioneered still have a small Scottish presence in the 21st century. Montmagny The region is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, south-east of Québec city - A county which was known as Cornwallis in 1791 - Anglo Protestants, a few families resided in the village of Patton and a few families in Montmagny - The situation was quite different on an island off Montmagny by the name of Grosse Isle (Grosse Ile), the unfortunate and troubling "Quarantine Station" of 1832 to 1937, in which too many Irish, Scottish and British immigrants died from malnutrition and various typhoid epidemics and were buried on the island
