Sally Daniel, Secretary, Windycrest Windword Editor: Barbara request - Sailing Club Windword Page 3 2013 FLEET CAPTAINS FROM THE COMMODORE Windycrest is enjoying a great summer. We have lots of activities going on Keelboat Racing Fleet out at the Club. We have many new member enjoying activities in racing, jun - Bob McGinnis ior, and adult training, and it seems like the pavilion always has someone in it. 918-629-9308 It is nice to see the Club active and vibrant. Be sure and check the schedule [email protected] and plan to come to an event that appeals to you. It has been an especially sad month for Windycrest. Since Memorial Day we have lost some of our stalwart members, Jack Marsee; our first Commodore, MC Scow Ken Greenwood; Joe Becker, a rock of sailing in Oklahoma; fellow racer Kevin Grant Gerondale Meehan; and newer member Paul LaGore. All of these members did their part [email protected] to build Windycrest into what it is today. To get a feel for how much Ken and Joe 918-241-0675 had in the formation of Windycrest, you can read the 25th Anniversary Book that is on the website. It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to them for now. As we work on our fourth and fifth generations of members, the leadership and Centerboard Racing Fleet love of sailing that these leaders exhibited should be remembered and inspire Darrel Daniel all of us for the future. 918-865-2719 Windycrest will be holding our 34th annual charity regatta on Saturday, [email protected] September 7th. Since the closing of the MS Regatta, I had been struggling to come up with something that the Club could get behind and do our part to bet - ter the world. When the word came that our friend and past commodore Steve Catalina 22 Snider had been diagnosed with ALS, Steve approached us and asked that the Dean Kohlwey charity regatta benefit those who are affected by this devastating disease on a 918-494-3023 local level. While medicine and research sections are better funded to find a [email protected] cure, the mundane things that affect people with ALS are not. Especially in Mark Westerman Northeast Oklahoma. Things like cutting the yard. Building an access ramp to 316-393-4419 a home. Replacing a hot water tank. Widening a doorway. All the little things [email protected] that a patient and caregiver need but are unable to do on their own. Even the littlest thing can weigh heavy on the mind. The ALS Patient Services Outreach (APSO) is just such an organization. It is Thistle new, just starting here. Steve is asking that the members of Windycrest help get Fred Morgan the APSO going. This request is not just for him but on behalf of all the ALS 918-245-6419 patients and their families and caregivers. Steve's dream is to see the APSO [email protected] become a reality for local ALS patients. The regatta is in the planning stages, and it will be a low key affair. It will be a really special sailing day as it may be the final time Steve will be able to race +95 Fleet/Sunfish (he is hoping to at this time) on his Catalina 22 Noteworthy . Full details will be Steve Snider in the August Windword, and we'll also publish information on the Windycrest 918-242-3192 website as it becomes available. Please plan to sail on September 7th. Steve [email protected] will be thrilled if you do. MC Nationals was a great time, but woo was it windy. We managed to get 4 races in, but we were blown off the lake each day. None of us Windycrest C27/25 sailors had a very good regatta, but we all had a great time. Drew and I partic - Mike & Tracy Lang ipated in the team racing demonstration. It is a different type of sailing. Three 918-242-3855 boats per team raced each other on a 250 yard long windward leeward course, C27/[email protected] doing two laps per race. It was way fun because instead of raw speed, you used Continued on Page 4 Windword Page 4 Windword Editor: VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT Barbara Montalbano We got good marks from the Corp of Engineers on an inspection in June. Jack 918-664-5373 Stewart gets the most blame for our good fortune but his band of merry helpers [email protected] must share in the blame.
