Year 9 German Exchange : An Experience to Remember

The first leg of the Year 9 German Exchange was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The German students enjoyed a fantastic, fun-filled week with trips to London, Portsmouth and Salisbury and a day spent with their English partners at Marwell Activity Park. It’s fair to say that along with learning extra English, the German students left Wyvern with some fantastic memories of their amazing time in . ...Continued on page 5

Charlie Over the weekend, many Wyvern students took Year 9 Student Reporter their German partners to either Bournemouth or 6 Year 9 Take to the Stage with 7 Showcase Performances

At the end of May, friends and family were welcomed to the Drama Studio at Wyvern College to see the Year 9 Showcase Performances. The Drama students had been working hard to develop and rehearse a range of scripts over several weeks as preparation for the C3 Performance Exam that they will undertake in Year 11. This event provided an invaluable opportunity for them to experience what it is like to perform in front of a live audience, as well as the chance to show off all their hard work.

Each group had to choose one from a list of scripts and then adapt and rehearse them. They needed to provide all the technical aspects as well – lighting, staging, sound, make up and costume. They certainly didn’t flinch from selecting challenging and hard hitting pieces: ‘Josephine’ (a docudrama based on the events of 9/11), ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ (about the journey of Jewish prisoners to the concentration camps), the Disappeared (about those that went missing in Argentina under the Junta), ‘The Tree’ (a fable with real relevance to the environmental issues facing the present world) and ‘The Government Inspector’ (a very funny political farce brought right up to date to reflect current events). What was striking is how many other curriculum subjects were touched on in preparing for the performances – History, Geography, English, Environmental Science.

It was a moving, funny and thoughtful evening, enjoyed by both students and the audience. Well done to all those who took part! 8

Goodbye to Long-Serving Staff

Working alongside Wyvern’s fantastic teaching staff are many super support staff. Just before half-term, the College said farewell to two of its longest serving support staff: Angie Broomfield who had worked in the College kitchen for over 20 years and Lyn Lyons who had been a cleaner for 14 years.

A big thank you to Angie and Lyn for their contribution to the College and best wishes for the future from all the college community – we will miss you both! 11 Year 8 Enjoy Supreme Court and Parliament Visit

At the end of April, 54 Year 8 students and accompanying staff made an early start for the annual trip to the Supreme Court and Parliament in London.

On arrival, the party was split in two with one group going for a walking tour around Downing Street, Horse Guards’ Parade, and Whitehall, whilst the other group was taken into one of the chambers of the Supreme Court where students were told about the role of the highest level of court in the . In this court, government laws are overseen and individual appeal cases considered where there is the potential for a change in our law. The two groups then swapped over before taking lunch in St James’ Park.

After lunch it was onto the Houses of Parliament, where the group divided again to take turns in experiencing a sitting in both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Afterwards the groups went back to the Education Centre where they took part in workshops on voting and campaign techniques. To round the visit off, Mims Davies, local MP and Sports Minister, came along to meet and talk to the students about life as an MP.

It was a really full and interesting day, with the coach getting back to Wyvern at about 7pm. This is always a popular trip but the question is – where will it be heading in a few years’ time when parliament relocates during the Palace of Westminster renovations? Watch this space! 12 13 Proud Times

Wyvern College is delighted to share the following story about former student Emily Sergeant, who studies Travel and Tourism Level 3 at Eastleigh College. Thanks to Eastleigh College for providing this article which was published in their May 2019 Newsletter:

Emily left Wyvern College in 2017 and she was determined to follow her dream and work as a cabin crew member. She had looked at other colleges and their offer, however with the course content being exactly what she wanted, some great feedback from friends and family, a timetable that suited her work life balance, and teachers that had inspired her at interview stage, she chose to study at Eastleigh College.

Emily shared that her day to day life at Eastleigh College has been varied and interesting learning various skills, from health and safety, cabin crew units, role playing in a mock aircraft classroom to practice interviews. Along with her group, she visited Barcelona for a week long adventure and learning task, which she says was a huge highlight.

On the Travel and Tourism Course, Emily says the teachers not only taught them about the various units of the course but also gave them encouragement and support to prepare for their next steps into employment. Her advice to anyone looking to join this course is to ensure you work hard to get your dream job. Before Eastleigh College although she knew she wanted to be cabin crew, she never dreamed she would secure her dream job at British Airways. She focused on what she was taught and used the skills learnt to build her confidence and prepare her for this role. Well done Emily from all staff and students at Eastleigh College.

Anyone interested in studying Travel and Tourism, or any of Eastleigh College’s other career-focused courses and apprenticeships can find out more on the college’s website - eastleigh.ac.uk.

Oxbridge Bound

There is very exciting news regarding former students Becky, Vedanshu and Kiera, who have all been successful in their Oxbridge applications. Becky and Ved have received conditional offers from the University of Cambridge to study Natural Sciences and Kiera a conditional offer from the University of Cambridge to study Geography. They are part of the group of 62 students from Peter Symonds College who have been successful in their Oxbridge applications this year.

Peter Symonds and Wyvern are rightfully proud of their success, as demand for these places gets ever more competitive. The quantity of offers amongst Peter Symonds’ students is exceptional but they are also very much aware that much of the credit should go to the students’ previous schools.

Whilst at Wyvern, all three of these students were taken on the Year 10 Oxford University Taster, organised by Careers Leader Katie Bruce – a visit designed to help raise aspirations amongst our students. This news proves that it was, indeed, an inspiring day. 14

Spotlight Careers Week on This year’s National Careers Week inspired students to think about the host of options Careers available to them, with a range of visiting speakers and tutor time activities. The day started at St Anne’s College with a welcome talk, which introduced the students to higher education and Oxford University, including some information on student finance. They then transferred to Balliol College for a workshop on student life with current college students. Students were fortunate to have lunch in the beautiful Balliol College dining hall, followed by a tour of the college campus. To end the day, students returned to St Anne’s College for three academic taster lectures, providing an insight into university teaching and learning. Afterwards, students commented that they were more informed about their Post 16 and Post 18 options and felt more confident to apply to an Oxbridge or Russell Group University. 16 17 The School Report

UPHAM CE(A) PRIMARY SCHOOL

With the warmer summer weather here, everyone at Upham School has been involved with planting and gardening this term.

Class 1 have been busy potting up lots of vegetable plants around their outside area. Courgettes, beans, spinach and everyone’s favourite – strawberries, to name a few. This has created lots of physical challenges and they have applied some of the things they have found out from their weekly Forest School visit. These have been delivered by a parent who is completing his qualification and the children have been walking out of school to a local copse which is full of trees, birds and deer!

Classes 2 and 3 have both visited Hilliers Gardens this term. Both have been learning about plant growth and Class 2 found out about pollination whilst Class 3 explored the biodiversity of plants.

Children in Class 4 have helped plant up some new raised beds in school. The school is trying to create an area to attract even more bees – they are very lucky to have a large colony of solitary bees in school, and hope these bee-friendly plants will provide much needed food for them later in the season. 18 The School Report There are no two weeks the same at Fair Oak FAIR OAK INFANT SCHOOL Infant School, with so much going on it can be difficult to keep our Twitter account up to date!

In the style of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, during a week in June; On Monday we began Book Week by reading ‘The Word Collector’ by Peter Reynolds in assembly, a story about a boy who collected interesting words. All the children left with a word to read and find its meaning, the words included: symphony, guacamole, effervescent, brilliant, everlasting. Year R brought in a favourite book to share with a friend with adventure stories, fairy tales and non-fiction books to name a few.

On Tuesday, some Year Two children visited the Apple Store in Southampton. The children learnt how to use the Clips app, creating their own presentation, incorporating and editing text, graphics, video and sound. Tuesday also saw Year One delve into the world of shadow puppetry with a performance from ‘1,2,3 Stories 3’. They also brought Oliver Jeffers book ‘The Great Paper Caper’ to life, holding their own paper aeroplane contest with Germany Class being the champions!

On Wednesday the ‘Read Around the World’ initiative was launched, with children receiving their Reading Passports, having to read seven books from different countries on a worldwide theme.

On Thursday children brought in unwanted books from home in exchange for tokens for the Book Swap. Some children from Year Two also took part in the Cluster Tennis Festival at Bishops Waltham Tennis Courts, led by Active Academy. They played against other local schools, putting into practice skills learnt within PE and demonstrating our School Values of Collaboration, Perseverance and Respect.

On Friday Book Week came to an end with children and staff coming to school in pyjamas! There were even some parents who came in to read stories at the beginning and end of the day.

On Saturday children reflected on their learning at home and on Sunday they looked forward to a new week of learning adventures. Keep up with everything going on by following our Tweets on Twitter, @FairOakInfant… we’ve even had a like from Tim Cook, CEO of Apple!

FAIR OAK JUNIOR SCHOOL

Since the last newsletter, Year 3 pupils have visited Hilliers Garden Centre, Year 4 have completed their swimming programme and visited The Sustainability Centre, Year 5 have been away to Stubbington Study Centre for their residential, and Year 6 have celebrated VE day as a culmination of the World War 2 topic.

The SATS are all over and Year 6 pupils are now looking forward to their residential trip to Fairthorne Manor. Everyone is also getting excited about, and practising hard for, the end of year production – ‘Alice in Wonderland Jr’.

There have been many sporting events taking place, with the highlight of these perhaps being the Boys’ Football Team representing the South West of England in the English Schools’ Football Association National Finals. They ended up as runners up – the second best team in England!

Shortly, the transition activities for September will begin and the children will spend some time in their new class with their new teacher. There will also be an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s new teacher at an Open Evening on Monday 1st July. One of the big changes for September will be the introduction of a new uniform for all new children to the school, with all children wearing it from September 2020. 19 The School Report

STOKE PARK INFANT SCHOOL Bringing Learning to Life at the London Science Museum During an inspiring Science Week, children at Stoke Park Infants School had the opportunity to visit the London Science Museum.

Year 1 children got the chance to apply a range of STEM skills when exploring ‘The Garden’, which offered the pupils an exciting hands-on investigation of Science and Technology. During their session they investigated: different ways of moving water, floating and sinking, materials and forces on a simulated construction site, and how sound and light can travel. The classes were all resourceful and demonstrated many engineering and problem solving skills.

Year 2 pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit the ‘Pattern Pod’. The children were enthusiastic as they applied their knowledge of coding, debugging and programming to solve a range of multi-sensory problems in the interactive workshop. Like miniature scientists the children had to explore and make predictions about events on earth.

The children were also fascinated by the Museum’s incredible displays of scientific achievement. Many of the children were mesmerised and curious about how transport had changed over time and their imaginations even looked to the sky as they learnt about space exploration. It was a fantastic day and many happy and inspiring memories were made for both the children and the adults who were fortunate enough to attend this trip.

STOKE PARK JUNIOR SCHOOL Do We? WeDo

Stoke Park Junior School pupils have been building towards a brighter future this term. After a successful Tesco Bags for Help appeal in local supermarkets and Express stores where customers were given a token to choose their favourite local cause, the school was awarded a grant to make a purchase towards learning resources. Investing in STEM activities, it was decided to purchase sets of Lego WeDo robots; a great resource and one that is often outside the financial reach of many schools because of the associated costs. Thirty-five boxes of WeDo arrived and children were introduced to the very exciting technology after the frantic unboxing – think Christmas morning in Denmark!

A rolling programme of introduction was carried out and children across the school were introduced to Milo, the WeDo robot that is the main build character. Teachers throughout the school panicked at the prospect of thousands of Lego pieces disappearing up vacuum cleaner pipes at the end of the day and building began. The children absolutely loved their lessons, the chance to ‘play’ in lessons was grasped with two hands and bricks began to take form. Cooling fans, spy robots and race cars were amongst the amazing creations that sprang to life. The children had the chance to put their coding skills to the test too, seeing how they could adapt their devices for different purposes. Could they turn the Spy Robot into a burglar alarm to stop their classmates stealing their water bottles? Could they add the sound so horrific that everyone pleaded with them to stop? Of course they could! Everything will go to my husband anyway!

Theft from motor vehicles We have recently received a number of reports of theft from motor vehicles in Fair Oak and Horton Heath. We would like to give you the following advice to reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim:

• Ensure your car is locked and the windows are closed (leaving it unlocked may invalidate your insurance should an incident occur). • Upon locking your vehicle try your car door to ensure it is actually locked. • Park your car in an attended car park. • Look for public car parks approved by the Park Mark scheme. • When parking at home, use your garage. If you don't have a garage, park in a well-lit area. • Don't leave anything on display in your vehicle, take all your personal possessions with you when you leave the vehicle. • Remove sat nav holders and visible sat nav ring marks from windscreens. • Leave the glove box open to show there's nothing inside. • Fit an alarm or immobiliser to your car. • You can register your property for free at www.immobilise.com • Do not store your car's documents in the car.

You can find lots more crime prevention advice on our website www.hampshire.police.uk

Summer Crime Prevention We would like to remind you to consider the following advice as the weather starts to warm up and the evenings become lighter:

• Keep ground floor or accessible windows locked in rooms you are not using • Don’t leave doors and patio doors open • If you are doing some DIY, do not leave ladders and tools out, lock them away • Lock side or rear gates which provide access to your garden • If you are in the back garden, do not leave the front door unlocked • Remember to shut car windows and sunrooves, even while parked on the driveway

Schools Parking Parking in the roads around the Wyvern campus continues to be an issue and Eastleigh East Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently working with other agencies and the schools in order to tackle this. We are patrolling the relevant roads at the key times as often as possible and will be issuing fixed penalty tickets and/or advice to motorists. We would encourage you to use the “Park and Stride” schemes wherever possible, which are located at The Clock Inn, Sandy Lane and The Lapstone, Botley Road. We would also like to inform you of the following parking guidelines and remind you to be considerate of other road users, pedestrians and residents: • Do not park within 10 metres of any junction. • Do not park on corners. • Do not block driveways or public access roads • Do not block the pavement. A wheelchair or buggy should be able to get past your vehicle on the pavement.
