There were 102 passengers (74 males and 28 females), a crew of 25-30 headed by Captain Christopher Jones and at least two dogs onboard the Mayflower when she set sail from , England on September 6, 1620 for her trans-Atlantic voyage. The majority would become the settlers of in what is now . The ship arrived first at , near , on November 9 before continuing on to Plymouth Harbor, arriving there on December 17. Of the original passengers, 37 were members of the separatist congregation seeking freedom of worship in the New World. One baby was born during the trip and named . Another, Peregrine (meaning "wanderer") White, was born on November 20, while still anchored in Provincetown, onboard the Mayflower. He was the first English child born in America to the people who came to be known as the “Pilgrims”. About half of these emigrants would die during that first winter in their new land.
