June 8 - Susan Mckeown - One of the finest voices in folk music, Susan is from Dublin and has a wide-ranging repertoire of Irish immigration songs. The New York Times called her “inspiring” and “gifted.” Her new CD is Sweet Liberty. June 15 - Louis Killen - An icon of the British folk scene and one of the finest ballad singers in the English language, Lou spent 7 years with The Clancy Brothers. He accom- panies himself on concertina. June 22 - The Johnson Girls -- Joy Bennett, Maggie Bye, Alison Kelley-Kraan, Bonnie Milner, and Deirdre Murtha. Internationally acclaimed yet infrequently heard at home in New York City, The Johnson Girls sing 5-part harmonies with grace and fire. They specialize in maritime songs from the woman’s perspective. CD release party for their new recording - “On the Rocks”! June 29 - Robbie O’Connell - The best-loved Irish singer in America today, Robbie shares his uncles’ (The Clancy Brothers) love of sea shanties. A fine guitarist and re- nowned songwriter with insightful interpretations of modern-day immigrant themes. July 6 - Stout Extra Strength - Fiddle, mandolin, banjo, bass and guitar. Their wide- ranging repertoire includes deepwater shanties, Stephen Foster pieces and songs from 19th century New York’s waterfront pubs. The weather is finally feeling like summer, and even though it is only the beginning of June, I know many of you are making summer plans. To help you with those plans, we have the festival listings in this issue. Special thanks to John Mazza for compiling them and helping us to enjoy our summer even more. This is a great time to go down to the South Street Seaport Gallery, where the weekly Sea Music Concerts have begun. See our Events Details for more information. In June, we also have the Gospel & Sacred Harp Sing, the Riverdale Sing, the Chantey Sing and the Sacred Harp Singing.
