  • Press Quotes
PRESS QUOTES ASSOCIATED PRESS: Wise words pour forth from Chris Smither – observations and aphorisms, similes and internal rhymes, run-on sentences and concise quips, all in a conversational flow. The careful construction of Smither’s lyrics is a thing of beauty and the bedrock of his bluesy folk music. Smither is an excellent acoustic guitarist and first-rate foot-stomper. NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: [Smither] taps his foot to keep the rhythm, much like the late blues legend John Lee Hooker. His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent. And then there's the voice – equal parts gravel and molasses. (I edited a little out) ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither's roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin' Hopkins in Smither's weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine. MOJO (5 STARS): Hundred Dollar Valentine is a thing of profound beauty; deep, sad, wise songs, allied to perfectly crafted arrangements, from a a man who’s live long enough in darkness to address the big, heavy questions with a lightness of touch. OXFORD AMERICAN It was that rhythmic push-and-pull, that New Orleans sensibility that made Smither stand out NEW YORK TIMES: With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate. MAVERICK: Cast your mind back to the first time you heard Hank Williams, Big Bill Broonzy or JJ Cale and remember how good it felt.

Lincoln Association For Traditional Arts Since 1982. News To Put A Little LAFTA In Your Life ! Spring 2009- 2010 Vol 1 PO Box 30561 Lincoln, NE 68503 Chris Smither comes to LAFTA Main Stage on April 24 Legendary blues/folk guitarist Chris Smither rounds out the LAFTA Main Stage concert season onSaturday, April 24 at 7:30 PM at the 7th Street Loft, 504 South 7th St .. Chris delivers one of the most riveting live shows you’re ever likely to see.Blues and musicianship at its best with the ledgendary folk/blues singer/songwriter from Maine. His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent. And then there’s the voice—equal parts gravel and molasses, Smither’s singing sounds like a distillation of the folk and blues heroes he grew up listening to in New Orleans. Rolling Stone enthuses, "Chris Smither delivers one of the most riveting live shows you’re ever likely to see. His growling vocals, badass finger picking and uniformly brilliant songs are here in spades." “Back in the old days,” muses resilient troubadour Chris Smither, “writing new songs and making new albums were just chores. My priority was, and still is, performing live. I guess I still write the songs and make the records so that I can go out and play – except that now I actually look forward to it. I’ve learned how to do it, and I’m very eager to get stuff recorded once I’ve written it.” Recorded in only three days, his latest CD, Time Stands Still, is just the eleventh studio album of a career that now spans over four decades.

  • Dar Williams Has Always Followed Her Muse. When She Was up in Somerville, Massachusetts in the Early Nineties, Knowing That
Dar Williams has always followed her muse. When she was up in Somerville, Massachusetts in the early nineties, knowing that she wanted to pursue music or theater, she worked backstage at the Opera Company of Boston and wrote plays on the side. But she was in Boston, and the muse led her into the myriad open mics and tip jar gigs of booming folk revival. She opened a trunk of old songs and started writing new ones. She went to three or four open mics or song circles a week and recorded two cassettes. Yes, cassettes. When she felt like the noise of Boston was getting to be too much, the muse led her to the cornfields and college towns of Western Massachusetts where she sat on her futon and wrote the songs that would become The Honesty Room, her first CD, which she recorded in the basements and back woods studios of Amherst. She hoped the songs she was writing, with titles like When I Was a Boy, You’re Aging Well, and The Great Unknown, would lead her into an idiosyncratic part-time music career. Little did she know that the coffeehouse scene and the beginnings of internet communities were building to a crescendo and eager to receive her warm, witty songs. By the end of 1994, when The Honesty Room came out, she had rock-solid management, the best booking agency in the country for singer-songwriters, and a career-making slot at the Newport Folk Festival. She also signed with Razor & Tie records and penned the material for her next album, Mortal City.
