Jameson Whiskey distilling history had its origins in Ireland. The oldest official registered trademark was in 1784. The in Northern Ireland dates to 1608 during the reign of King James I. Other whiskey history includes Buffalo Trace, the oldest continuous operating distillery. Buffalo Trace is located in Frankfort, Kentucky. It was even allowed to operate during Prohibition for "medicinal purposes." Buffalo Trace began production in 1773. Scotsman, John Jameson began his whiskey business on Bow Street in in 1780. A former sheriff clerk, Jameson arrived in Dublin during his mid‐life. Dublin was a whiskey making place in those days, at a time when Irish whiskey was second to rum in global popularity. During the 1800s, Ireland found competition from ; blending, lower costs and bottling techniques caused Ireland to become second to Scottish whiskey. Distillery wars, embargoes, Prohibition and competition took its toll on Irish whiskey. In 1975 the Jameson Dublin operation decided to expand to , County . The site's roximity to barley farmers, freshwater and space to build caused the move. Today Midleton is a popular touris attraction. The Midleton Distillery was formed by combining three smaller distilleries. It united some of Ireland's whiskey created like in the past from "old Irish monks and hermits in the Dark Ages, taking the "Good Word" to the safety of remote island communities for safekeeping, the Irish whiskey industry…" The craft of blended Irish whiskey was not simple. Jameson's distilling is done three times to create its signature smoothness. Today it is a visitors' favorite. The tour of the facility provides a historical and modern‐ technical application of whiskey making. Key stops on the tour include the Microdistillery, Cooperate, Maturation Warehouse and of course the tasting store. The tour covered also included a tasting room session before finishing at the bar/store. The tasting room compared American, Scottish and Irish Jameson whiskey.
