Corey “Keola” Carpio, 18, of Wailuku, a 1994 heart transplant recipient, died Tuesday Jan 28, 1997 in St. Francis Hospital. His original heart was weakened by a virus he contracted in April 1991. Although it was originally thought his condition was terminal in 1991, he made a comeback, and parents and friends held fund-raisers to help defray the cost of treatment. After a long wait, he got a call June 6, 1994, to go to San Francisco for the transplant. The heart donor was a 13-year-old boy who died after he suffered severe head injuries in a bicycle-car accident. “Both my husband and I—we just thank God for all these extra years we’ve had with Corey, because it gave us that much time to build up all these memories of him,” said Myrna Carpio, his mother. At first after the transplant, he seemed to be doing well. But some time later he started showing signs of mild rejection, his mother said. He was able to take part in moderate activity along the way, and the biopsies never showed rejection traits serious enough for him to be hospitalized, just different levels of mild rejection, she said. He went to St. Francis for a regular biopsy over the weekend and took a turn for the worse, his mother said. Corey Carpio was born in Wailuku and is also survived by father Albert; brothers Clayton and Lance Tanaka and James Carpio; and sisters Sheryl Tanaka, April Motooka and Debra Domogma. The family has lived in Hawaii for a total of about five years and consider the islands home, said Altha McDermott-Brown, chair of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association fundraising drive. Carver’s last wish was to help his family pay his medical bills and funeral. “He knew he had caused his parents to go into debt,” said McDermott- Brown, who plans to hold a benefit concert next month. Call McDermott-Brown at 623-4305 for more information. [SB 17/06/1997]

Mary Whang Choy was one of the core of Hawaii’s longtime political activists who pursued their vision of justice in causes as historic as 1970s anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and as current as the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. “She always acted with clear-headed conviction,” said Kekuni Blaisdell. He said Choy was one of the organizers of the 1993 Kanaka Maoli Tribunal staged to pass judgment on the participants in the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. “She didn’t just talk; she was there when we needed her. She was always for what was right,” he said, recalling her presence in numerous demonstrations and meetings as “very tall and handsome and slim, very soft-spoken.” Choy, 78, died last FridayMar 14, 1997 at her home. She is one of several activists interviewed in a recent University of Hawaii Press publication, “Autobiography of Protest in Hawaii” by Bob and Ann Mast. She grew up in San Francisco, the child of Korean immigrants. She told the authors that she was inspired by the American black civil rights movement. The wife of Dr. Duke Cho Choy, “Way back when she played the doctor’s wife role, she was very mainstream,” said daughter Patti Choy. “When the ’60s came, she made a change in her lifestyle. For whatever she did, she took the risk of losing friends. She was brave enough to stand her ground and move on to make other friends.” Patti Choy said one of her mother’s first causes was support of Kalama Valley pig farmer George Santos and supporters in their stand against eviction to make way for suburban development of the east Oahu area. She joined demonstrations against eviction of Ota Camp residents, against state closure of the Hale Mohalu facility for leprosy patients and against H-3 freeway routing near ancient Hawaiian sites in Halawa Valley. She was in the group that pressed University of Hawaii and state lawmakers for establishment of the ethnic studies program there, said Marion Kelly, a professor in the program. “When students staged a sit-in, Mary was there in a soup kitchen in Bachman Hall organizing the food. Again, when the tribunal was held in 1993, she was there in the kitchen. She wasn’t one to take leadership roles—she was always there when people needed support.” Kelly said Choy “was a very principled person. She tried to live by her principles. She was extremely sensitive to people who needed help, particularly in the cause of Hawaiians and Hawaiian lands.” Choy was active with the American Friends Service Committee and was a student of Zen for 25 years. The Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Crosby, minister emeritus of Central Union Church, served as its senior minister in years 1952-70 and guided its remarkable growth in that eventful era. Crosby died Thursday Jan 9, 1997 at Arcadia Retirement Residence. He was 91. “He was a very strong leader of Central Union Church,” said the Rev. Edwin Robinson, present minister. “He came during the years following the second World War, and it was a time of growth in Honolulu. It was sort of the golden era of mainline churches nationwide. “Central Union Church at that time was also a strong church, but he continued to help the church to grow and become even stronger,” Robinson said. “During his ministry, I think there was a good deal of building that went on . ... This reflected a need for more space for a growing congregation.” A second Sunday morning worship service was initiated; a minister to youth and full-time minister of music were added; and church membership grew to more than 2,000. The women’s, youth and administration buildings were built; the main sanctuary was completely remodeled, and Arcadia Retirement Residence was built. The Senior Center program also started under Crosby’s guidance in 1964. Additionally, Central Union expanded to the Windward side during the Crosby ministry, Robinson said. Central Union Church Windward, now Windward United Church of Christ, opened in Kaneohe. “It’s also significant that Arcadia was built,” Robinson added. “He retired there and passed away there. He was very instrumental in the building of that, providing leadership for its being built.” “He had the longest tenure in the history of the church. He was there for 18 years, and no one was there any longer than that,” he said. A native of Norfield, Miss., Crosby graduated from Yale Divinity School. Before moving to Hawaii, he was a minister in Waterbury, Conn., 1932-39; Manchester, N.H., 1939-44; and LaGrange, Ill., 1944-52. Everywhere he live and worked, he was very active in civic and service groups. He is survived by wife Muriel. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at Central Union Church. Lyn Crost, a World War II correspondent who brought the names and exploits of nisei soldiers in Europe to their families through the pages of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, died yesterday Apr 7, 1997 in Washington, D.C. She was 80. In her book, “Honor by Fire,” published in 1994, Crost brought to public attention, the contributions of previously hidden warriors, Japanese-American soldiers in the Military Intelligence Service who played a vital role in the war in the Pacific as translators and interrogators. “The book is the first complete story of all nisei soldiers, not just the 442nd (Regimental Combat Team),” said Honolulu attorney Ted Tsukiyama, who served in the China-Burma theater and met Crost after the war. “She always wanted to write about them. She got the impetus during the reparations hearings in Congress when she heard people saying ‘why should we pay those people ... their people started the war.’ The ignorance moved her and that’s what prompted her book,” said Tsukiyama, who was acknowledged in Crost’s book for his help and encouragement. (Congress acted to pay reparations to Japanese Americans who were confined in internment camps during World War II.) “Oldtimers will remember her column. Her name became a household word. People couldn’t wait to get the paper,” Tsukiyama said. “She made sure she dropped as many names as she could; it had a lot of local interest.” She donated the royalties from the book for a “Brothers in Valor” monument to be erected at Fort DeRussy commemorating the nisei who served with the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service and the 1399th construction engineers battalion which worked in Hawaii, he said. “She never forgot the nisei soldiers and what they had to go through to prove themselves,” Tsukiyama said. “She was a wonderful person.” Ray Nosaka of the 100th Infantry Battalion said Crost is one of a handful of people to be made an honorary member of Club 100 and the 442nd Veterans Club. “We always invited her to our reunions ... she only came out once.” Little had been known of Military Intelligence Service until her book. The U.S. government instructed the Japanese-American soldiers not to tell of their exploits; it kept records of their service secret for 25 years.Crost wrote in the preface, “Thestory must be told ... Americans do not know how hard these men fought in a war to keep democracy alive.” In the Pacific War, Japanese commanders, confident that their American foes could not decipher Japanese, were casual about using codes. They did not know of the Military Intelligence Service, composed of 6,000 Japanese-Americans linguists. Its members questioned captives, eavesdropped on communications between Japanese pilots and their airfields and even gleaned intelligence from poems and diaries taken from the bodies of dead soldiers. Many of the nisei volunteered; others were drafted from the internment camps in which their families were confined following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Crost was raised in Hartford, Conn., and after graduation from Brown University she came to Hawaii to visit an aunt and landed a job on the Star-Bulletin in the 1930s. Later, she was an AP correspondent in Washington when she interviewed Joseph R. Farrington, publisher of the Star-Bulletin and Hawaii’s delegate to Congress. Concerned about the casualties taken by Hawaii’s soldiers in Europe, Farrington hired Crost in 1944 to cover them. After the war, she became the paper’s Washington correspondent. During the Eisenhower administration, she was a White House special assistant. Her career is recalled in a display about the nisei at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. It shows her typewriter, war uniform and trench coat. She was married for several years to Edward Kennedy, an AP war correspondent. They had a daughter, Julia Kennedy Cohran of Seattle. Also surviving is Crost’s husband, Thomas W. Stern, a retired geologist.
