In the men’s basketball program at Lewis University, the impor- tance of the quest for success in competition is surpassed only by the value placed on succeeding in the classroom. The academic performance of each basketball student athlete is closely monitored. Attendance at regular study-hall sessions is required, class attendance is mandatory at all times, and the coach- ing staff encourages faculty members to offer suggestions that may enhance a student athlete’s classroom experience. The result? During the past several years, the graduation rate of Lewis University men’s basketball players is nearly 80 percent. Yes, academics and athletics can go hand in hand. The Lewis University men’s basketball program is a shining example of that valuable combination.

Lewis assistant men’s basketball coach Chris Skinkis advises both Brandon Dagans (left) and Mike Robinson during study hall.

FLYERS IN THE COMMUNITY

For the men’s basketball program, reaching out to the community is just as important as succeeding on the court and in the classroom. During the school year, the Flyers frequently take time out to visit lo- cal schools where they speak at assemblies, read in classrooms and connect with area youth. This season each Lewis athletic program has adopted one local school to work with exclusively in an effort to promote reading. The men’s basketball team selected Kenneth L. Hermansen Elementary School (Romeoville, Ill.) as its adopted school. Members of the team go the school on a regular basis to read to students. In addition, the students track minutes read on their own in the hopes of winning a pizza party at a future Flyers’ game.

Members of the men’s basketball team speak to students at Joliet’s Forest Park Elementary School about the importance of education, staying focused and working hard to achieve goals.

BOOSTERS, FRIENDS & FANS The following information is provided by the Lewis University Athletics Department for representatives of athletic interests (boosters):

INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) declares that each institution (Lewis University) is responsible for the control of its intercolle- giate athletics program and compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. This control includes the conduct and actions of all staff members and other individuals or agencies that promote the athletic interests of Lewis University. Representatives of Lewis University ‘s athletics interests are strictly prohibited from off-campus recruiting activities involving personal contact with potential student athletes.

KEY COMPLIANCE DEFINITIONS Prospective Student-Athlete: A student who has started classes for the ninth grade, including students in prep schools and junior colleges, and individuals who have officially withdrawn from four-year schools. Any student not yet in the ninth grade becomes a prospect if an institution provides the student with any financial assistance or other benefits that are generally not provided to prospective students. Contact: A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parents, relatives or legal guardian(s) and a Lewis University staff mem- ber or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Recruiting: Any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s relatives (or legal guardian) by a Lewis University staff member or representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and participation in the Lewis University intercollegiate athletics program. Extra Benefit: An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a Lewis University employee or a representative of athletics interest to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend with a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. National Letter of Intent (NLI): An official document administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association and utilized by subscribing member institutions, including Lewis University, to establish the commitment of a prospective student-athlete to attend a particular institution. NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse: A central clearinghouse that certifies athletics eligibility for Division I and II student-athletes. The Clearinghouse uses high school courses and test scores (ACT/SAT) to determine freshman athletics eligibility.

WHAT IS A BOOSTER? A “representative of the institution’s athletics interests” or booster is an individual who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration to:

Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization, including corporate entities (e.g., apparel and equipment companies), promot- ing the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program; Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution; Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospects; Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program. Once an individual is identified as a booster, that person retains the distinction indefinitely.
